It would have to be someone who could do as much good for Steger as Mayor Sherman did when he was elected YEARS ago.How easy some folks forget. Some are too young to know. The town was known then for bars and bar fights. If I remember correctly,ONE of the first things Mr. Sherman did was thin out the travens. Now,yes we have a problem with gangs and dope.Don't blame your mayor, trustees, or police.Put the blame where it belongs. The adults who won't and don't keep their children at home where they belong and teach them respect as we were taught.Last I heard there is a curfew.(Parents, Where are YOU)They grow into young adults who have no respect for themselves or other peoples property. You can see this with you own eyes when these young adults dare you to run them over before they trip over their pants that are down around their ankles.
Sorry I'll get back on subject.
I would support someone with morals, respect, education in city goverment, someone who lives and has lived in Steger all or most of their life, someone who is willing to listen and follow thru with promises, someone who is for the people of Steger and not just to make a name for themselves.Let me know when you find someone.

Michelle Helsel for Mayor

Michelle Helsel for Mayor.... Now that's change you can believe in! When Michelle says she'll do something, whether you like her idea or not, she'll follow through!

Countless hours given to the children of this community for years! Was instrumental in building the middle school instead of adding onto the old building or rehabbing it. And I know she has a definite vision of what this Village can become with the right focus and TEAMWORK.

Ya gotta have a team to pull this off, not all yes men, a true team that can debate, reach consensus, think out of the box, and build!

I vote for Michelle!

Time for a little F Y I of what it takes to run for an office. I hope I donít scare anyone off.

First let me say that most people that do run, do it because they believe they can, and want to make the town, school, or other a better place. There are some, who do it for the power and limelight.
First you have to find someone willing to run.

Second, itís a hell of a lot of work to run for an office. Kiss your family goodbye, because youíre not going to be seeing much of them for the 3 months before the election. To do the job right if youíre elected, also takes a lot of your time for the next 4 years.

As you have seen in some of the posts on these forums, once your name is out there, people slam you, and tell lies about you, and most people believe the lies. You spend a life time making a good name for yourself, and then you run for office. I used to tell my kids that the only one, who could make a liar or thief out of you, is you. I thought that to be true until I got involved with politics. I once had an old friend, ask me about something he had read in the paper. He believed what he read. I asked him how long he had known me, and he replied about 35 years. I said, and you believe the paper? He said well, thatís what the paper said. Papers are in business to sell papers.

You canít even sue because once you run, you are considered by law a public person, or in the public eye. They can say just about anything true or not true, and thereís not a damn thing you can do about it.

The next task is raising the money needed to run a campaign. In the last mayoral election, Louís party spent over $20,000. Yep, thatís right, twenty thousand dollars. You have to raise money from private donations, and use your own. An incumbent mayor has a much easier time raising money, than someone new. You can check those figures at the State Board of Elections if you doubt.

You need to hire a lawyer to check all your paper work or you may get disqualified. You have to file reports with the State Board of Elections ever 6 months and every election, state, federal, every election whether youíre running, or not .

We should be damn glad we have people willing to put their name out there, and go through all this just to try and make a difference and improve our town.

And now if someone can talk her into it I think Michelle Helsel would be an excellent choice.
What a great idea

Michelle Helsel, what a great idea. Does any one think she would do it? Just imagine the possibilities of her being in charge of the village. I do not even know her on a personal level but I have met her and like her. Very approachable, level headed and does not seem to let people stand in her way of getting things done. If she says Eric Deihl is good for our schools then it must be so. She is very good about picking a "team" to work with. Just look at her track record. She also never sits still to long so my guess is she has something up her sleeve right now that we just do not know about yet. I am sure what ever she does next we will all be impressed.

Before you open your mouth maybe you should get your facts right. First of all the district is one of the most financial sound in the area. If you attend school board meetings you would know that. You would also know that she is one of the biggest supporters on our kids taking trips. I was at a meeting when she was not only supportive of the columbia kids going to Springfield she said lets take the 8th graders to Washington. And guess what, they have gone to Washington more then once already. I also heard Mr. Smith say at a meeting that if it were not for Michelle Helsel our kids would not of been able to visit the White House. They were told no until Michelle made a phone call and guess what, they were allowed to tour the White House. My kids are not at the jr. high yet so they have not benefitted from big trips like this but my younger kids have gone on 1 or 2 field trips every year. Are you sure your kids attend 194? As for qualified teachers, if they are teaching I have news for you, they are certified with the state of Illinois. Now you do not get more qualified then that you fool!!!! I hate when people open their mouths and do not have the facts. The only thing you have proven here is you have NO idea what you are talking about!

Oh, geez, the fun never stops!
Papadoc hit it all on the head. These other folks I think obviously do not know what is going on. Year after Year, District 194 has been awarded Financial Recognition Awards from the state for their Fiscal stability and healthy fund balances.
This Board has done more to promote educational trips than I can remember for at least 15-20 yrs, Washington DC, Springfiled, Musicals, etc have all increased under the current Board.
Qualified Teachers, they have to be qualified now, they have to be certified in their subject matter. This district has worked very hard to bring in young, energetic, passionate teachers as our Veterans have retired or class needs grew. They even called back some of them that were let go last year...
The fact that the union and District agreed last year to a one year, 1% raise that did not even kick in until half way through the year plus the other cuts made kept this District from getting hurt even worse by the State's fiancial ruin. Who did that? Who Built those relationships so we could get to that Point? John Kaminski and Michelle Helsel did, along with the rest of the Board and the Teachers. They ALL worked together.
How many programs have been cut in our District? compare that to many schools who already do not have Band, Sports, Art, not to mention the academic programs like Science night, Junior Honor Society and others.
This District is not rich, but they are not bankrupt either. But now more than ever they need to be prudent and strategic going forward so they can weather the storm....How will they do that? By working as a team, not just the Board and Administrators, ALL OF US! rowing in the same direction.
Papadoc was right, people just slam those who run for office because they are easy targets to vent their frustration on whether they have the facts straight is of no matter to these types of people. Steger could be lined with gold and bright pretty flowers everywhere and these folks would still say The Board is this, Lou Sherman is that, John Kaminski is a bully, Michelle Helsel does not do anything...shameful...
If you ask me, just take Michelle and that whole board and send them all right to Village Hall! Like them all or not, they get stuff done and done right. Well....I think one of them lives in South Heights.....
Let's get serious and stop insulting people on here. There is so much more we could accomplish with a little respect.
This Village Government needs an enema! needs to be cleaned out, revamped, tightened up, and the current Trustees need to feel the heat from this town and get it in gear, and whoever wins in a couple of weeks, they need to get it in gear as well. The time for polarized, non-visionary style leadership is long dead and gone. Bold Ideas, unwavering committment to what can be instead of what has been must be the new mantra for this Village's Leadership. Anything less thatn that would be another train wreck for 2 more years until the next election.
GET OUT AND VOTE!

Well said must be Mr Diehl you is the only one who would have time to right this Can I as you WOW is she is so great for our schools then why would you want to take her out of that job.!!!!! And why would she want a job paying 15000 a year to run a village that just slams there Mayor !!!

Lou Sherman

Did you know that the cause of his 'dimentia' and 'alzheimers' was that he had been overmedicated.
He is fine, out of the hospital and getting back to his real self.

I hope he lets the nasty trustees and so called friends have it who have tried to undermine him.

Really? you people will complain about anything! If she does a great job for the schools and turned them around maybe she could turn around the town. That seriously has to be spelled out for you? Our schools are great compared to surrounding areas? Rather send your kid to chicago heights? crete? richton park? park forest? u.p? No way! If you like those towns schools better MOVE! I moved to Steger from CH so that my kids would be able to go to Steger Schools. If there is someone not certifided teaching my kid I would be at the Supers office and if I got nowhere I would be at a school board meeting.

So what if aids are outside on their cell phones. You are just driving by maybe they are not texting but checking the time to see when they have to return. Are they allowed breaks? or is that not allowed under your plan?

Some people on here are so damn negative. You will always find something to complain about no matter what. The best thing this town has goin for it right now is the schools. Sure not the police department or Mayors office...

Obviously you did not go to any public school since you cannot even spell and the computer you are typing on has spell check. Facts are facts and I believe you are misinformed about a lot when it concerns School District 194. Look around the state, the demographics, income per capita, and then judge your school board. 194 has some of the best teachers and test scores; again considering the demographics and money spent per student show me a group that can do better. Where I live, my 2009 tax bill had over $4,200 going just to the elementary school district. Now with that kind of money I would expect my district to be in the top ten in the state. It is not, but that doesnít mean my kids will be slighted. They still have good education system and I am paying for that. I grew up in Steger and I will always love my home town. The residents that live there now need to wake up and realize that the schools are one of the only shinning points that the town still has. As for what Mayor Sherman has done for the Village? Not too much in a very long time, but he made it what he wanted it to be. A town full of people who believe that he has done everything that was good and someone else is to blame for everything that went wrong, is wrong, or done wrong. He is the ultimate politician and that is what makes him likeable in a lot of situations. I have nothing against Lou as a person, but as the Mayor of my Home town-I expect better. Better development, better beautification, better financial responsibility. I see posts commenting on the good ole boyís clubs. There is only one club in Steger and its Louís. They are the only ones who have made this town what it is. Iím sure there are plenty of good candidates to run for Mayor. There were two good candidates that did run in Sherry Newquist and Bobby Joyce. They were both candidates who love the town, extremely qualified, and wanted to make it better. Itís very hard to make change in a town where the majority of the voters who vote, do not want change and are easily mislead by a very good politician. As for the residentsí who post on this site and consistently defend the current administration. Get a clue, if they have done anything positive it was only because that was natural progression. If you want to bring up the K Mart that happened 30 years ago, just look to the north and see the opportunities lost at that time. If you want to bring up the industrial park area, just look at Crete and the businesses they have coming in. If you want to mention Scrementiís, that was the family not the Village and the fact that Will County taxes the homeowners more and are business friendly. Just look at what the Village has along 394 and Steger rd. Iíll tell you what-NOTHING. Look to the south along the same area. What does the village have? Strip malls that are either in dire need of rehabbing (Harryís Plaza) and another (The Pantry Plaza) which was built with dirty money payoffs and subpar construction. I wish my home town the best of luck in the upcoming election and the one in 2013. Wake up voters-Vote for changeÖ
