Tuesday I drive over for a meal and find the place closed down! What on earth happened? About my favorite place to eat in the High Country!

I heard the owner was getting stolen from by one of his employees and he was arrested...I guess the owner got fed up that his profits were embezzled and threw in the towel.

It beats me why he did not notice this sooner and save his company. It makes you wonder if he really had his heart in his business in the first place...or maybe he just had a little bit too much misplaced trust.

At any rate, you would think that he would at the very least "notice" that large sums of money was not being accounted for. Everyone locally, including the innocent employees were very shocked at the closing since they were given no warning whatsoever!!! And, in case you are wondering, I am NOT a former employee, just a local who hears things!!

Hey Local Gal - you don't happen to know Paige who worked there do you? Our family had become friends with her. Just wondered if she's working somewhere nearby. Terrible that it closed right before Christmas.

I overheard some people talking about Pappy's. They mentioned the owner either sold it outright or is leasing it to another BBQ chain owner and some work is starting on the place.

I hope they open soon and serve breakfast on the weekends too.

I drove by the other night and saw lights on and some materials out front. I wonder if its going to be Pappys again or a different name/owner.

It is now Frontier BBQ. The same guys who run artisinal are opening it up very soon. It will blow every local bbq place out of the water

I'm glad it will be open soon. I also like Carolina Barbecue. Now people have a choice. That's a good thing. Remember JD's Smokehouse?

Drove past and saw the sign for Frontier. I hope the food quality is good and the portions are fair sized as it was with Pappy's. It needs to be a down to earth eatery again and not a haughty place, we have that all around us in Banner Elk and Shulls Mill.

They also need to get some good waitstaff and bartenders in there. Pappy's had 4 ofr 5 waitresses that really stood out. Friendly as can be, always a smile and very attentive. You never had to wait to place your order once seated and your drink was always filled. Same with some some of the bartending women. That's part of the success equation Frontier has to strive for.

One thing that frustrated the heck out of people was the hostess station and how and when guests were seated. It was not uncommon to see open tables ready and no one was seated in those areas. Why? Not enough wait staff scheduled to cover the business coming in the door! Sad as it sounds, too true and Pappy's lost a lot of business that way, people walking out after having already waited 30 minutes and there being no end in sight to the wait. Previous management failed on this point continually, but it was an unfortunate example of nepotism at it's worst.

I used to eat at Pappy's 4x a week, breakfasts and dinners. I'd gladly do the same if Frontier strikes the magic balance again. I'd be happy to talk to the new owner / manager and give them more insight they previously may not have had access to.

went to new frontier bbq.....overpriced and bad

7.25 for an order of green onion hushpuppies with maple syrup....7 dollars and twenty five cents for hushpuppies....3 of us.....total bill was 40 bucks....

the bbq plate was 10.50..the sammie...8.50...i had half a rack of ribs 14 bucks...the ribs and bbq were tasteless...all the sides were straight out of a can.....except for the mac/cheese which was overcooked. all the food was liveless, bland and blah.

i dont know how the hushpuppies were...we couldnt afford them
Not what I hoped for

Much smaller menu than Pappys.

No more breakfasts and limited hours for lunch and dinner.

Pulled pork flavor was ok, but not as good as Pappy's and there was less of it for more money.

I too saw the hush puppies for $7.25 and shook my head, they should be 1/2 that.

Maybe they're hoping to cater to the out of towners with vacation homes here - aka, the very well to do.

For us locals who are living in an area where the cost of living is like California and wages are low, this reopening isn't geared towards us.

had dinner at frontier recently and the bbq was really great. ate at the old pappy's and never went back. pappy's waitresses look like they were on meth. i don't understand the reviews about price, not much more for that dryed out bbq they were serving at pappy's. i guess some people need the mcdonalds dollar meal..

So someone from Beech Mountain / Newland of a higher tax bracket than most likely 66% of the population doesn't think it's too expensive, fancy that! This isn't Artisanal buddy, it's supposed to be a down to earth BBQ place.

You have shown a complete lack of understanding of proper grammar, syntax, and diction; yet, as much as I would enjoy helping to enrich your literary capabilities, I cannot justify wasting any more of my life than I already am in responding to this garbage. My only goal tonight is to sneer at, berate and belittle you and everybody else in this area that is responsible for me having to show my license when I buy allergy medicine.
You might have saved time and skipped typing "local gal" as it is awfully redundant. You have already made it crystal clear that you are a product of 'these here yonder hills' just by what you attempted to write, although I do applaud your presence of mind to use spell check. Most locals loose sight of the importance of spelling in all the excitement of typing with one finger down at the public library, which 'yall' only go to for free internet access so you can file your weekly certification for unemployment. I'm willing to bet you the equivalent of your next unemployment check that your life can be summed up more or less in the proceeding way.
-First name is either Tammy, Tracy, Kayla, Kaylyn, Kourtney, Tiffany, or Tosha.
-Middle name is definitely Lynn.
-Last name is Ray, Cook, Lee, Greene, or Trivette.
-Half permed, half straight, bleach-blonde hair snaking towards your waist with about 3 inches of natural brown roots attempting to escape your flaky scalp, which is still red from the bucket of hydrogen peroxide you dipped your skull in 3 months ago (hence your 3 inch roots..)
-Excessive eye shadow/mascara/foundation to hide your insecurities from the same people that you hope still perceive you as one of Avery Counties finest.
-You have unnecessarily long finger nails which you routinely chip and break when fighting with your ex husband...speaking of which...
-You married your high school sweetheart, Daryl, when you were 17, not because he had a Hemi, not because you hated your Dad(you did/do hate him but it 'ain't his fault, he can't help beating you and Momma when he is drunk'), and not because his Daddy owned a couple acres of Christmas Trees; but because once you were pregnant with Daryl's second child, he just shrugged and mumbled "Hell, we might as well go down to the courthouse and make this official"
-You live next to your parents, and both of your trailers are on your grandparents property.
-The restraining order you placed on Daryl after he threatened you and your kid's lives with a rake and a rusty lawn gnome is about to expire next month, unfortunately around the time he is to be paroled from Avery Corrections, where he has been for 9 months for selling the Oxy's he stole from your grandmother to an undercover officer in a school zone.
-You have been fired from Ingles, Dollar General, Valero, Sugar Mountain, and/or Beech Mountain, for cussing at your boss(es) when they confronted you about chain smoking Cheyenne full flavors on the clock.
-You think Obama is a foreign born Muslim who hates whitey and wants to steal your musket and blunder-horn.
-You and your 5 children guzzle through twelve packs of Mountain Dew Code Red, Sun Drop, RC Cola daily.

I'll end with this: wrestling is fake and NASCAR is God's least favorite.
