I have some questions. Right now I'm living in Chicago, IL & I hate it to pieces. Don't like city living, it's high crime & I pay $1500 for a small, run down 2 bedroom in a crappy area. I'm a 25 year old female pursuing a career as an equine/large animal vet. Now my choices are between Bowling Green & Lexington. & since I've never been to KY, I thought id ask what it's like there. Obviously much different than Chicago I'm sure.

How was the crime in 2013?
What's the weather like?(We have 3 feet of snow here)
Is it a good place to raise children?
How are the jobs? Scarce? Or available?
What is minimum wage?
Is it possible to find a 2-3 bdrm for under $1000 a month?
& what are some pros & cons of the area?

Thank you in advance!
well

Minimum wage is 7.25. But the cost of living is way cheaper than up North.
The weather is mild, no snow, but still cold this winter.
Yea you can find a three bedroom 2 bath house for under 1000 to rent. In a nice area.
Bowling Green crime is not as bad as the cities up North but..It it rapidly growing and getting bigger with more people moving here from all around so things are changing and it's not a small town anymore.
Bowling Green is very Diverse...With a lot of people moving here from the big cities surrounding Ky.
The traffic is horrible and it seems they pass out drivers licenses to just anyone around here. So be prepared for your car insurance to jump up for no reason if you move here. Tons of accidents.

Thank you for the response. I don't expect any area I move to, to be 100% crime free. I just don't want any murders happening on my doorstep every week, or getting my house broken into on a daily basis.

I have lived in Bowling Green and in the surrounding areas of Lexington. Lexington is considered the Horse Capital of the World so your chances of being employed in your field are greater there. But I would not live IN Lexington. Anderson County (Lawrenceburg) is about a 20-30 minute drive depending on where in Lexington you want to work and it is VERY cheap. We lived in a brand new 3 bedroom, two bath, full basement duplex for $800 and that was about the highest in the county. The people around Lexington were much nicer than Bowling Green and you still have the small town feel in the surrounding areas. You also have Versailles, which is a very nice old town. Stay away from Nicholasville, as it has gone downhill by wanna be "gangs". While living there we were forced to listen to gunshots nightly, saw robberies happen weekly, etc and we lived in a nicer part of town. Bowling Green is getting too big for its own good. It's a nice town but again, if you move there move to the outskirts...ie: Plano, Richpond, Rockfield, Alvaton, etc. If it were me my number one choice would be Lawrenceburg or Versailles. Best of luck!

I am pleased with my relocation from the Chicago area. Beautiful country here. Be prepared for folks to ask you where you are from as soon as you speak...:)

In the rural areas, use much caution during times of hazardous road conditions (infrequent)... Instead of sliding into a guardrail, you may slide down a holler!

Chiggers, ticks, and snakes, oh my! No more picnics in the grass!!

Definitely put Kentucky on your list to consider as a future home...

Dear Kerri,
I am a licensed professional who moved to B.G from Louisville nine years ago. Compared to Louisville B.G has no crime. When my son visits my inside joke is to watch the news to see who got arrested for jaywalking. The people of B.G. are also very friendly. In fact, down here you have to be friendly as you see the same people day in and day out. If you do not know them directly then someone who you do know does know them. That said, Lexington has more money and more resources. I attended school there from 1978 to 1985. And, as DifferentProspective2 has pointed out Lexington is the horse capital of the world. In fact, the I-64 corridor/ Bluegrass area from Lexington to Louisville is littered with horse farms and very well to do families. So, while I would like to invite you to B.G., my honest opinion is that if you want to be an equine veterinarian you need to elevate Lexington over B.G. in your search for a new locale.
Good luck with your future.

Life here is fine. Don't worry about the traffic. It's bad on Scottsville Rd during rush hour and that's about it. By bad, it might take you 15 minutes on a bad day to get from the beginning of Scottsville Rd to I-65.

If you are thinking being a vet, you may should consider moving somewhere there is a vet school. Neither Lexington nor Bowling Green have a vet school. You can take pre classes, but no Dr programs at either that I'm aware of.

I've lived in BG all my life. It's great. Lots of shopping, restaurants and entertainment. I hour proximity to Nashville. Crime is rare, particularily on the southeast side of town. I work at the university here, so I have international exposure as well. But the best part, in ten minutes, I can be out in the country.

What have you been smoking?! I will bet that my family has lived in BG far longer than yours and I am telling you what. BG/Warren County has the most corrupt bunch of politicians on the planet. The influx of the Bosnian/ Mexican and Russian drug lords which were brought here by Martha Deputy Garvin ( David Garvins wife I believe), along with drive by shootings, more Bank robberies ever in the history of BG etc, etc. are out of control and you are telling this poor individual that BG/WC is the place to be, "NOT"!!! Oh yeh, and not to mention the the biker Gangs that have moved in the area including the Hells Angels!! BG?WC is the shithole of Kentucky and I would run as far away from BG as I could if I were not already so damned old!! Take my advise Chicago, there are good places to live like Florida that has no state income tax etc. that I would go if I could!!
