Mr. Martin was my boss, my friend, and a fine newspaperman not often found in country clubs but always in the Baptist Church on Sundays.

I was among dozens of journalists who benefited from his guidance, both in Alabama and in other places. I wo Washington correspondent for the Montgomery Advertiser-Journal, then Washington bureau chief for the Jefferson Pilot papers, which he served both as president, editor and pubisher of the Beaumont Enterprise-Journal, and a newspaper in Clearwater, Florida.

In addition to the weeklies mentioned here, the Jefferson Pilot chain included the newspapers in Plainview and Midland.

While his heart was in his native state of Alabama, he busied himself with work of both the Baptist and Methodist churches in Fort Worth.

Another passion was his beautiful horses, which won a stack of prizes.

May he rest in peace.

Sorry. In my post in appreciation of publisher Harold E. Martin, I named the Plainview and Midland newspapers as part of the Jefferson-Pilot chain. That is incorrect. They were, and are, Hearst dailies. For those who are keeping score, Hearst bought the Jefferson Pilot newspapers. Sorry about that!

Harold was my father in law for 24 years. He helped alot of people including myself and my husband. He always stood for what was right. He was a man of honor and respect. He lived his life according to the Bible not what was popular amongst people. He was always fair. I will miss him dearly. I am glad I had the chance to get to know him. He was a great man.
