A cop can't take a guy with a crutch down any other way than shooting him? It was easier to shoot him than to call for back up? He couldn't use his club to take down the guy with the gimpy leg? That's pathetic.

Good. All societies need DISCIPLINE and RESPECT for the law. If some drunk in a bar can't figure that out, too bad for them.

A cop should not have to risk injury. You listen to the police, or bad things might happen to you.

The police were 100% right. We don't need troublemakers in our societies and we sure don't need drunks causing fights with police.

Using a tazer*, stun gun*, mace, nightstick, or probably just laughing at the man for coming at you with a crutch are a number of possibly better ways that situation could have been handled.

* yeah, yeah, I know tazers and stun guns kill people, but they are a better option here if they really had to use something

Dude - ever been hit with a baseball bat in full swing? How about a piece of metal with screws and nuts sticking out of it? On the other hand, this guy was stupid enuff to wail on a police officer - the consequences are what the consequences are. Stupid is, what stupid is.

Gee Andy, I barely had enough time to take the bullet out of my shirt pocket while he was dragging himself over to me. Everytime he swung his crutch, he fell down! I had to shoot him before he fell on me.

I find it hilarious that the Village official was like " You could KILL someone" with a crutch. Umm....right. I suppose it would've been possible IF the cop just stood there and took his beating with trying to defend himself, grab the crutch out of the drunk guy's hands, call for back up, or...hmm. let's think. Maybe get back in the car he was standing next to for cover? LOL. Yeah, shooting the guy was much easier than any of those options! Unreal. Watch, they'll probably charge the drunk with attempted aggravated battery!

Article never said the guy was disabled and NEEDED a crutch. Very possible he stole it from someone and was running full blast at the officer ready to beat him down.

You people are idiots. Now you want police to run and hide when they are threatened. Sorry, thats not how it is done. You threaten a cop, prepare for the consequences.

OMG! I guess the policeman forgot how to tackle the guy - then of course, he would have gotten the guy in a stranglehold & waited til the guy was strangled to death!

And I guess the policeman "forgot" about shooting the guy in say - like the arm?

I don't know how these so-called policemen live with themselves.

If anyone else shot someone because they came at them with a crutch, they would have been charged with murder.

"The suspect was listed in critical condition at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood "

ok the guy has a crutch the cop has a gun , if he was actualy fearing for his life , the cop couldnt shoot him in the leg to take him down ? he need to shoot one into the the mans chest , sounds a little excessive for a man with a crutch for a weapon.

You know, even if the guy didn't need the crutch (and even if he was huge), just shoot him in the leg. I'm sure it would slow him down a bit in his crazy crutch weilding tirade. Then, chances are no one would end up in critical condition, and the crutch might even come in handy.

Maybe we need crutch control. Every handicapped person should have to register with the state & county (for a fee of course). Maybe even stage a few rallies to ban crutches and get them off our streets. Anyone with a criminal record can't have them. People don't kill people - crutches do! Cops just continue give examples of why something needs to be done. I wonder what a regular civilian who shot a guy with a crutch would recieve, cops would have thrown the book at him.

I agree. I guess it makes them look tough. Maybe these policemen got picked on as kids & now have to make up for it ? Maybe it's the only way they know how to act tough?

Notice how these supposed tough cops aren't fighting in the war? Why not, if they're so tough? Probably it's because they AREN'T tough.

The problem with all these Barney Fife's out there is that there isn't any Andy back at the courthouse to bring reason and logic to the situation, just more Barney's.
