I live in Tewksbury but I send my children to the Innovation Charter School in Tyngsborough because I did not want them to go to the high school in town. Not because of the teachers or bad academics, but because the school is greatly in need of structural work.
Shawsheen Tech is the high school of choice for many of my friends. However, many of their children, who wanted to learn a trade, were denied admission because of the sheer numbers of students applying there. Funnily enough, my friends with honor roll students and athletic children did get in. Many of these children are not planning on going into a trade after school; they are planning to go to college.
I feel badly for children who do want to learn a skilled trade because I think Shawsheen does pick who they want for their school. The only fair way to accept students would be on a lottery basis among those who are seeking acceptance. But I doubt that will ever happen.
Tewksbury needs to take a long, hard look at where their tax dollars are needed and put them there.
There are a great number of special needs students at the Tech. And parents of those kids had a really hard time getting the help for those kids in Tewksbury Schools. Thank Goodness for the Tech. Also...I don't understand the logic in having a child in 8th grade decide whether college is going to be their future. Never mind what happens after high school...you get a great education at the tech. the fact is that Tewksbury is just blaming the Tech for their problems. Okay...keep the Tech a secret, but lots of the kids are gonna miss out.

The Tech is hard to get in and I have to say its for good reasons. My child is in the 11th grade there and has not missed a school day yet. Its because of the teachers and students is why the Tech has a great attendance record on a daily base's. The kids love being there and the teachers love to teach our kids.

Each town is allowed so many kids per town. So if Bedford has 65 slots and only 10 go then they open those other slots to the towns that have a waiting list. If Tewk. school board spent a little bit of money on there schools then it would not be a problem

So if a school works at improving their things so kids want to be there, it will be successful? What a concept. So what is Tewksbury doing to improve their situation?

The TSC is attempting to destroy the Tech, the theory is, if we destroy the Tech, then more Tewksbury children will go to TMHS. That will raise more money to the Tewksbury Schools. So, with any luck, we will end up with two crappy high schools, not just one.

The students should have a choice of schools, if more people want to go to the Voke, and less the high school, the solution is simple. Hire more teachers at the voke and let more kids go to the voke. The money can come from the High School budget since they will have fewer students.

Not so simple, it cost more to send a kid to the tech and they can only allow so many kids per town to attend, it's really not a huge school. Tewksbury has failed the school kids in town and should be focusing on how to fix their high school instead of trying to stop the towns kids from seeking an education else where.

Maybe we should be looking at expanding the Tech? I would support a bigger tech, with a larger enrollment instead of pouring good money after bad, with a new TMHS.

The Shawsheen school isnt slick. Get with the program. The Shawsheen school is in much better condition. My child is only in first grade and already I am thinking about the tech. Why because the condition of the schools stink. No child should have to attend a school that is the pitts.
And if Tewksbury would pull their head out of their butts and start going over their figures and weed out silly things maybe it would be able to run on its own. This town is a big waste of money. Mr Oneil should be focusing on town waste not a good thing for children.

This is just not true. The towns average the cost of elemental, middle/jr high/high School and admin when providing the town cost for per student for comparison. If you take out the elementry and jr high/middleschools the numbers are the same.
