OXFORD - Douglas Hodgkin was convicted of capital murder after University of Mississippi graduate student Jean Elizabeth Gillies was bound, beaten, raped, sodomized, bound and strangled in her Oxford apartment in 1986.
According to his victim's family, Hodgkin soon will be walking free.
Despite a sentence of life in prison, Hodgkin was eligible for parole after only 10 years in prison. Gillies' brother, retired U.S. Army Col. Paul Herbert, said his family got unofficial word from both the State Parole Board office and a Department of Corrections victim advocate that Hodgkin was approved for parole after a Jan. 14 parole hearing.
"We are appalled and disgusted," Herbert said. "There is no way a person this dangerous should be allowed among the public."
Parole Board members Shannon Warnock and Betty Lou Jones did not return calls to the Daily Journal on Tuesday.
Retired Oxford Police Chief Steve Bramlett, then a police investigator, called Gillies' murder "the most heinous crime" he has ever seen and predicts Hodgkin will kill again.
Hours of torture and multiple sexual assaults elevated Gillies' killing to capital murder, but Hodgkin will not have to register as a sex offender. House Bill 893, if passed, would remedy that legal gap but could not take effect before July 1.

Yeah, I found this article about him (see below). Is this the same Hodgkin family who owns all the land out on Paris Pike?

Man who killed pregnant Ole Miss student in '86 paroled
by The Associated Press

JACKSON - State Parole Board officials say a 43-year-old man convicted of killing a pregnant University of Mississippi graduate student in 1986 may soon join his family in Kentucky.

Douglas Hodgkin was convicted in 1987 of capital murder in the death of Jean Elizabeth Gillies.

Parole Board member Betty Lou Jones said in a statement Wednesday that the board voted earlier this month to release Hodgkin if Kentucky agrees to supervise his parole.

Hodgkin, who has family in Kentucky, has been incarcerated since 1987 and has served 22 years of a life sentence. He was sentenced before Mississippi adopted of a life-without-parole law.

Gillies' family members are disappointed.

"It is absolutely unbelievable," said Gillies' sister, Doreen Gillies Passmore of Johnson City, Tenn. "My sister was a fine person who had her whole life ahead of her. And he (Hodgkin) could have done something good in the world instead of taking my sister's life."

Authorities have said Gillies was about eight weeks' pregnant. They said her hands were tied behind her and she was gagged.

During his trial, Hodgkin, who had dated Gillies for about five weeks, testified someone else attacked and killed her in her Oxford apartment while he slept there.

Hodgkin, of Winchester, Ky., was a junior business major at Ole Miss at the time of the slaying. Gillies, 24, was a graduate student in speech pathology. Her family lived in Magnolia at the time.

Hodgkin had seven previous parole hearings. Gillies family members appeared at each one to oppose his release.

Hodgkin's father, Bill Hodgkin, said Gillies' family has been through a tragedy, though his son has served his time.

"We asked the parole board to release Douglas to Kentucky," the elder Hodgkin said. "The parole board considered that he has been incarcerated for 22 years and has been a model inmate."

Mississippi Department of Corrections officials say Hodgkin doesn't have any violations on his record.

MDOC officials said it normally takes about two months from the time the state Parole Board votes to release an inmate, whose supervision will be transferred to another state, for that individual to be freed from custody.

Something horrible happened to these young college students. Her family had more money and power and were going to take him down. Everyone pegged him as guilty without looking for other suspects. He was a great kid to grow up with. He did alot of time, and lost alot of his youth. Now he is out, harmless, and values everyday of his life. He has to go everyday with people staring and gossiping about him. Drop this subject.

How many times do criminals around here serve less time than this or get off completely. This situation was between two college students. He is not out looking for his next victim. Beware of those around you insane due to pill addiction. They are more likely to harm you or your family.

too often they serve less time or get off completely - or never get arrested for some reason. you are right about the dangers all around people in winchester that are far worse than a 22 year old conviction. but there is fear of the unknown, so they choose to focus on and panic about what they can read in black and white and not the tremendous death rate going on under their nose.

Im amazed that anyone would tell someone else to calm down when talking about being around a murderer. Arent we all devasted when a young girl has gone missing then found murdered because this kind of person is let go in a community. I have faith in the system and if he was found guilty by a jury trial why we not believe he did it. Yes its wise to be worried i would be! He is living like he is on vacation. His father has enough money to buy his happiness so im sure he wants everyone to forget what he did.

Get a life and let the guy alone. He has paid his debt for the crime that he has done. Some people can be reformed, and others are tortured by the public, put out by the public until they snap and do something stupid again.

Once again proving that as a race, the human race is the most cold hearted, self-centered, hateful, of anything on the planet. Even wild animals are not as bad as a lot of people are.

this man did horrific things before killing this lady and he is going to be released. but john lennon's murder was over 30 years and that guy has been denied for parole. if this lady had been a celebrity i guess he wouldn't have a chance at parole. what a messed up country we live in.
