Well to each their own of course. I would say MTG. It was basically the original. What YGO emulated. It has been around for a lot longer, Has so much more development that it has even had to have revisions to simplify the game play to bring in new generations of players. Perhaps not locally(I do not know one way or another), but nationally and globally MTG has a far greater presence, which means much easier to find players to play against.

YGO has a bit of a perception of being a copy that was tethered to its cartoon. That has the advantage/disadvantage that most of the player base will be those who grew up on the show. So no where near as much oldblood/newblood that would bring differing styles and techniques to the game that would keep it evolving. Unless they reboot the show it seems most likely that YGO will only continue to dwindle in player base size. For all those negatives, its unique rule sets does make it a much different animal. If you prefer its strategic sensibilities it might be a better fit.
