For your information I receive food stamps an I have a membership at the YMCA! I work out 5 days a week and take weekends off. To look at me you would think I'm a fitness guru.

So how do you afford a membership at the YMCA, but cannot afford to pay for your food?

Nope I don't wonder about it at all. I'm fat enough WITHOUT food stamps.I have enough to worry about, too bad you don't. Get a life and quit worring about other people.

Some people get a FREE membership. It goes along with the food stamps. Taxes likely pay for the membership

Well it's a tough story. I'm glad you asked though! The way I figure it I might as well take care of myself until I get back on my feet. I don't blow my cash on cigarettes and booze. I figured a busy body like you would applaud my efforts. Damn it all..........

You are correct sir! I'm a democrat and I like this spread the wealth concept. And I know that I can look forward to more free stuff in the future because Nancy Pelosi tells me so! Isn't communism great?

Damn, I knew I was screwing up by getting out of the bed and going to work everyday!!! I dont think you can get a membership based on income anymore. I would love to go work out and keep myself healthy as possible, but I guess I would have to quit my job and go sign up on welfare first! I will be sure to put in my 2 weeks notice first thing in the morning! LOL

You don't have to get foodstamps or welfare in any other form to get the free YMCA membership, I'm almost certain. The YMCA is a non-profit organization. You just have to be within the income limits. Anyway...many people who receive foodstamps work. Isn't a Y membership around $100 a year anyway? Are you really going to spite someone for being able to afford less than $10 a month to get in shape? Especially if they work? Seems to me like a reasonably priced service. Stop thinking that welfare or foodstamps automatically equals unemployed. It does not.

many who get them work...in fact they have to work to get them now..and no I don't get them, but I surely am not gonna bash a person who is trying to make it either! Yeah if they are laying around they need to get off their azz and move..I work to have what little I got...and so does everyone else unless they are elderly or truly disabled.

The cheapest membership (unless you're getting hand-out assistance)
all amounts are per monthly

Youth (6-18)$12 per month
Adult 19-64 -$34 per month

Senior over 65 $21 per person or $29 for couple
Family $44
Single parent family $37
College student $25

I know of a girl that was on welfare and she wouldn't weigh 90 pounds soaking wet. So you don't know them all. Most fat people eat less than I do and still are fat as I am. The cheap foods are the most fattening, maybe if their foodstamps were increased they could buy the more expensive less fattening foods. Willing to help them out?

Instead of giving "more" handouts - how about a little education on how to shop/eat more responsibly. It should be common sense, but sadly that's lacking or folks just don't care.

Stretch those food dollars (whether earned by working or assistance) by using coupons, buying things on sale, buying cheaper cuts of meats(and cooking longer) etc

Most folks who get foodstamps usually have kids that get free breakfast and lunch and clothing vouchers, free cell phones. Also free healthcare and probably SSI - Also housing assistance & help with utilities. Add all that up as "value" or income (because that's what it is) that working folks have to pay to survive & you'll find out that many times, working folks manage to "make it" on less income that those on assistance.
