WASHINGTON — Past its own New Year’s deadline, a weary Congress sent President Barack Obama legislation to avoid a national “fiscal cliff” of middle class tax increases and spending cuts late Tuesday night in the culmination of a struggle that strained America’s divided government to the limit.

The bill’s passage on a bipartisan 257-167 vote in the House sealed a hard-won political triumph for the president less than two months after he secured re-election while calling for higher taxes on the wealthy.

Moments later, Obama strode into the White House briefing room and declared,“Thanks to the votes of Republicans and Democrats in Congress, I will sign a law that raises taxes on the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans while preventing tax hikes that could have sent the economy back into recession.”

The poor SOB who voted for him deserves whatever they get. Feel sorry for those of us who did not vote for him.

Well, good for you. Maybe your raise will balance your tax increase to where you're even - no decrease, no increase. The rest of us will be bringing home less. Why yes, good job, President Obama and the remaining clowns. So much for the "no taxing the middle-class"... lying hypocrites!

You do know that only single people making more than $400,000 or joint filers making more than $450,000 got a tax increase, don't you? I doubt that hits the pocketbook of anyone posting on Beckley Topix.

You do know that social security tax was increased 2% from 4.2% to 6.2%, don't you? I, personally, will be losing approximately $75 a month which does indeed hit my pocketbook.... maybe not yours, but mine. I can't speak for other posters, hell, they probably don't even know (till they get their first 2013 paycheck.)

That just took the tax rate back to where it's been for as far back as I can remember. It was only a temporary cut to help the economy struggle along. And you will probably take out much more SS than you ever pay in so stop grumbling.

That's a good attitude, don't worry about what's happening now because you ain't gonna live to see the end result. Apparently the 76ers wasted their time as did those who fought and died in WW2. Wow, that's brilliant thinking.

It burns me up so bad that everyone feels the wealthy need to support them. Why? Why do the wealthiest people need fo be taxed nearly 40% of their income? That's an estimated 14,000 dollars more a year! Yes, they can afford it, but why does that make it fair? Most of these people started from the ground up and made their money through hardwork and dedication. They're almost getting penalized for being successful. I find it very disheartening that the majority of the American people feel the wealthiest deserve to pay nearly half of their income. Disgusting. Obviously, they will be paying more on taxes because of their income, but 40%?!?! That is so unbelievable to me.

A progressive income tax structure permits a higher level of shared consumption for the country as a whole. A flat tax, or a consumption based tax, would have to be established at a level that the poorest in America could afford to be pay. This would lower the overall standard of public services available, and would lead to a further concentration of wealth in the hands of a small percentage of the population.

I'm not sure how many of the really wealthy actually pay that 40% rate. Mitt Romney is a good example. He pays a much lower tax rate (15%) than I do.

Personally, I feel that the best course would be to eliminate tax loopholes and shelters. Then lower the top bracket rate. Much fairer... don't you think?

Based on employee retention rates for federal workers, that raise was completely unnecessary. It's clear federal workers aren't leaving their jobs, despite a three year pay freeze. That's a clear sign that they are overcompensated.

Also, despite the wage freeze, federal workers were still able to increase wages by moving up job grades--either through promotion or by an expansion of job duties and authority.

A cut in pay and benefits is in order for federal workers. The private sector has seen the widespread elimination of employer sponsored pension plans and cuts in other benefits. It's time to see those measures taken on government workers.

I would have been far more impressed if he had added a second sentence to that statement describing the government spending cuts he was also signing into law...

Obama can't make changes by himself. He was ready to deal with Boehner but Boehner walked away and brought out his Plan B that even his caucus wouldn't pass. When you wait until the last minute to make a deal then the deal is probably going to be a bad one....that's what happened here.
