Would like any info concerning redhats. Can female redhats get hired for underground? Have a chance for training? Stuck as general laborer? Best mines to work for? Closest to Beckley? Any advice would be appreciated.

Are you absolutely sure you want to go that route? I was a female, working with the engineering crew underground quiet a few years back. It is pure harassment all the way around. I enjoyed my job, but couldn't because of dirty old men, and no I was not a slutty, trashy woman. I was trained to do my job and thought it would be a decent job, the pay was, but the harassment was NOT! You have no idea what nasty, filthy things dirty old men will do. Thank heavens, I was a fighter and stood my ground, and no one ran over me, but after about a year and a half, I said heck with this! If you need to know more, I can fill you in. Just please be careful!

I think women need to stay out of the mines, flirting with men and bosses so they can get an easy payday and sugar daddies.

That trashy one from Cleveland Cliffs that got fired gave good honest female coal miners a bad name. There are some good hard working women out there and there are some like the poster stated above.

I trust mine. Some women have been brought up in coalmining families and want to continue the tradition. Not all of them are flirts or want easy paydays, but I have seen some of the biggest ho's there are that do give the honest, hardworking ones a name and it sticks, even if they are not that way. That is in every job, not just coalmining. When I worked with the engineering crew, all of the women that worked at the mines were ho's. I had a good name and I was very proud of it. But like I said, it's not worth the harassment that you go through. Of course, it may not have been considered harassment if I had been a ho! LOL! This was many, many years ago when women first went into the mines. I would hate to even think of how it is now!

I am not sure what happened with her after she was fired. I am talking about that one that was giving a "show" and that is all I will say, I don't agree with what she did, but I am not here to tell her story either. There are several women in every industry (men too) who will use their sexuality to get ahead or a lighter workload. It happens everywhere, but unfortunately when it happens in an environment such as mining which is primarily men and "a mans job" it sticks out like a sore thumb and will make it harder for another woman who just wants to make a good living for herself and her family.

I think if a women wants to work in the mines she should. There a women mine inspectors. I dont think there are many but there are some. I've heard my husband talk about them. My husband took me underground couple of times but its not a job I would want. If I was gonna do it I would apply at a big company. Not all women are slutty and not all men are dogs. I trust my husband 100%, so I wouldnt have any problem with him working with a women. Wouldnt be any different than a male/female cop working together. A womens bathroom time might be a little tough in a small company......hmmm, really dont know how that would go over. lol.

To the original poster, Good Luck and hope you find a job you like!

It is all about trusting your man. I was just thinking about the job my husband works at. The other mines that I spoke about were underground with the "fluezy" women were back many years ago. He works on a strip now. When the job first started, there was one married woman and she is still there. The other ones were "fluezy's" looking for a man. They were able to get rid of most of them by layoffs, which was good because they didn't carry their load and were always off sick or on personal stuff and then some of them hung themselves by what they did. They had one that chased every guy that she could and she'd only been married 4 or 5 times. Didn't matter if the guys were married and had families, just as long as she could try to get in their pants! She dated a lot of them and finally married one of the bosses and moved away. The job has been real peaceful since she left. My husband never has any good gossip anymore! LOL! When she was there, it was like a soap opera, she took it and ran with it and oh, the stories that were told! So it's at every job, practically everywhere, just that some jobs are "blessed" like the above mentioned one and that's when you really find out how strong your relationship is. Like I said, it's women like her that gives decent women workers a bad name in the mines.

I am also a coal miner's wife and I say if you can keep up and do the hard work, go for it. If I can't trust my man underground I can't trust him anywhere then. I also think the dirty old men should be ashamed. It wouldn't fly anywhere else and it shouldn't underground.

Your statement makes you sound uneducated and stuck in the 50's. Get over it. Women WORK now. As far as someone regarding a miner as a "sugar daddy".... lol You must not have very high expectations out of life to consider someone that makes 50k-80k enough that the woman doesn't have to work.

I'm glad someone else said what I was thinking...I have a next door neighbor who doesn't work. She has 2 children that are both in elementary school. Her husband is a miner and she told me he makes about 75.000 a year. SHe seems totally content with just staying home, and I've always found that to be odd. My husband and I both are college educated and have 3 kids, all in school. We both work and have a combined income of $155,000. I try not to pass judgement on others, but I can't help but think why does this mom not want to go to work to have a better means to provide for her children? Her husband's income lets them live for sure, but how much better could it be if she even went out and got a job for $10/hr??? Lots of miners wives tend to have this mentality of just staying home. I guess it really is a difference in people's expectations on life.

If you have 3 kids who are not yet in school it woud take more money in child care then you would make in wages. And when you look at an extra grand a month or taking care of your children and keeping them out of germy daycares there really is no comparison.

I agree when they are small. I stayed home for the first few years. But once the children become of age (4) to start a school program, there is no other reason than the lack of desire to work. Children leave at 7am and come home at 2-3pm. That's a big window of time to just do "house chores". Your costs are right on, for 3 kids... but many only have 1. It's $400/month for one. If a child is 3 (that's when I let mine go to daycare) and you just have one, to make the decision to stay at home I feel is just an excuse. Even at minimum wage is $1,200 a month. But... like I said, it's all about lifestyles and expectations. If the family is fine with the amount of money made on one income, great. I have a coworker who's wife doesn't work "to take care of the child". He makes about 25k a year... and the family always has a hard time making ends meet. In this situation, the wife needs to go to work. It's a cop out. Very rarely does child care for 1 exceed the potential amount of money that can be earned. In their case, they even qualify for assistance, which really irritates me because it is just a reward for not working. Raising your own child is very important, but there is a fine line you walk that sometimes just borders on laziness.

I am not sure where you work at but I made $10 an hour and barely scraped in 1200 so Im not sure what kind of minimum wage gets that. Second of all you also need to FIND a job WILLING to work around your schedule and lets face it not to many are willing to do that. And I am sorry but some mothers may also feel like I do and will NEVER put their child in daycare its a breeding ground for germs. But I agree in the above situation if you are not able to comfortably support your family then extra income is needed. In my personal opinion its alot harder staying home taking care of the house and family then it ever way working at any job I have had so I dont really consider being a stay at home mom being lazy. It is hard freaking work, I have to have a schedule to take a poop for gods sake.
