By Paul Cameron, Ph. D.

Dr. Cameron is Chariman of the Family Research Institute of Colorado Springs, Colorado USA.

Most of us fail to understand why anyone would want to engage in homosexual activity. To the average person, the very idea is either puzzling or repugnant. Indeed, a recent survey (1) indicated that only 14% of men and 10% of women imagined that such behavior could old any "possibility of enjoyment."

The peculiar nature of homosexual desire has led some people to conclude that this urge must be innate: that a certain number of people are "born that way," that sexual preferences cannot be changed or even ended. What does the best research really indicate? Are homosexual proclivities natural or irresistible?

At least three answers seem possible. The first, the answer of tradition, is as follows: homosexual behavior is a bad habit that people fall into because they are sexually permissive and experimental. This view holds rat homosexuals choose their lifestyle as the result of self-indulgence and an unwillingness to play by society rules. The second position is held by a number of psychoanalysts (e.g., Bieber, Socarides). According to them, homosexual behavior is a mental illness, symptomatic of arrested development. They believe that homosexuals have unnatural or perverse desires as a consequence of poor familial relations in childhood or some other trauma. The third view is "biological" and holds that such desires are genetic or hormonal in origin, and that there is no choice involved and no "childhood trauma" necessary.

Which of these views is most consistent with the facts? Which tells us the most about homosexual behavior and its origins? The answer seems to be that homosexual behavior is learned. The following seven lines of evidence support such a conclusion.
1) No researcher has found provable biological or genitic differences between heterosexuals and homosexuals that weren't caused by their behavior

Occasionally you may read about a scientific study that suggests that homosexuality is an inherited tendency, but such studies have usually been discounted after careful scrutiny or attempts at replication. No one has found a single heredible genetic, hormonal or physical difference between heterosexuals and homosexuals - at least none that is replicable.(9, 12) While the absence of such a discovery doesn't prove at inherited sexual tendencies aren't possible, it suggests that none has been found because none exists.
2) People tend to believe that their sexual desires and behaviors are learned

Two large studies asked homosexual respondents to explain the origins of their desires and behaviors - how they "got that way." The first of these studies was conducted by Kinsey in the 1940s and involved 1700 homosexuals. The second, in 1970,(4) involved 979 homosexuals. Both were conducted prior to the period when the "gay rights" movement started to politicize the issue of homosexual origins. Both reported essentially the same findings: Homosexuals overwhelmingly believed their feelings and behavior were the result of social or environmental influences.

In a 1983 study conducted by the Family Research Institute (5)(FRI) involving a random sample of 147 homosexuals, 35% said their sexual desires were hereditary. Interestingly, almost 80% of the 3,400 heterosexuals in the same study said that their preferences and behavior were learned (see Table 1 below).

In the 1980s, scholars (12) examined the early Kinsey data to determine whether or not childhood sexual experiences predicted adult behavior.
The results were significant: Homosexual experience in the early year, particularly if it was one's first sexual experience - was a strong predictor of adult homosexual behavior, both for males and females. A similar pattern appeared in the 1970 Kinsey Institute (4) study: there was a strong relationship between those whose first experience was homosexual and those who practiced homosexuality in later life. In the FRI study (5) two-thirds of the boys whose first experience was homosexual engaged in homosexual behavior as adults; 95% of those whose first experience was heterosexual were likewise heterosexual in their adult behavior. A similarly progressive pattern of sexual behavior was reported for females.
It is remarkable that the three largest empirical studies of the question showed essentially the same pattern. A child's first sexual experiences were strongly associated with his or her adult behavior.
5) Sexual conduct is influenced by cultural factors - especially religious convictions
Kinsey reported "less homosexual activity among devout groups whether they be Protestant, Catholic, or Jewish, and more homosexual activity among religiously less active groups." (2) The 1983 FRI study found those raised in irreligious homes to be over 4 times more likely to become homosexual than those from devout homes. These studies suggest that when people believe strongly that homosexual behavior is immoral, they are significantly less apt to be involved in such activity.

Irvin, why the obsession? I've read several threads started by you and you're fixated on homosexuals. Why? Since you're a minister, I can understand that you know homosexuality is a sin. But why do you keep beating this drum when there are many other sins that are more rampant in WV? For example, why don't you talk about drugs, alcoholism, fornication, adultry, gossip and etc? Just guessing, but I think you have homosexual desires...most likely you've had them since you were a young teen but have never acted upon those desires. Since you've researched the subject, I'm sure that you must know those who are "obsessed" about the subject and continually denigrate those who practice homosexual activity are normally gay and/or lesbian themselves. My personal opinion is that everyone who practices this form of sex knows that they are sinning. God gave mankind a conscious and we know that lying, stealing, killing and etc. is sinful. I think true homosexuals are born that way, but as we all know, it is a CHOICE to practice that lifestyle or not ...therein lies the sin.

Irvin is a closet cock lover. He does this for 2 reasons. 1) to inspire his inner lust. 2) it serves to provide more of his christian casting of hatred, bigotry and hypocrisy.

Irvin is one sick individual as he posted lies about faith-healing blind and deaf. He flaunted his own gluttony with his picture showing he was about 350 pounds. He could not tell anyone what parts of Leviticus he practiced, and what parts he ignored.

Irvin is in his final days, and desperate to spread more hatred, fear and lies. Sadly, like most "christians" do. With all the stress and cholesterol inside him, I'd say he is an inch away from a big and final heart attack. He would be wiser to spend more time worrying about his own health than worrying about others.

guessing, Thanks for your opinion, and your entire reply but you are wrong on the obsession, however I have only one obsession that I personally and aware of and that is to Notify of the danger of people continuing to perform acts of godlessness while professing to be followers of Christ. of which there are many sins including but not limited to homosexuality, drugs and bearing falls witness, they will all end the hypocrites up in hell with ALL the ungodly.. Thanks for reading my post and I am quite sure I must at sometime post something someone agrees with.

Come on now. This is ALL you want to talk about!! Get your azz OUT OF THE CLOSET. And stay away from young boys or you will find yourself in trouble. Seeing a shrink to help you accept what you are would help too.

it is a sin that people have/are trapped in, just like a host of other sins. Jesus was tempted in all points, yet did not sin. Therefore, all sin can also be overcome. Pretty simple huh?

Simple indeed, Jesus said cast all your cares upon me for I care for you, if people would just understand who they are in Christ Jesus there is not a temptation that they can't overcome. But with sinners it is different, They have no power to over come their sinful lust, that is why all one can expect out of sinners is sin. they will continue to Commit sin, violate the laws of God and moral law until or unless they repent and except Jesus into their life.

For the most part, official scientific organisations have paid very little attention to Cameron's studies, and thus extensive scientific analysis of his claims have not been widely available. However Cameron's research, public statements and legal testimony have received criticism from researchers and organizations over methodologies they view as questionable.

[edit] From professional organizations
The American Psychological Association (APA) launched an investigation into Cameron after receiving complaints about his work from members.[2][3] The APA President Max Seigel sent Cameron a letter on December 2, 1983 stating that the Board of Directors had decided to drop him from membership for failure to cooperate with their investigation.[18] FRI has contended that Cameron had already resigned from the organization in November 1982, citing correspondence from before his formal expulsion.[19] In a letter published in the March 1983 edition of the APA Monitor, Cameron stated that his reasons for leaving included his opinion that the organization was becoming more of a "liberal PAC" than a professional society.[20] An APA spokesperson told The Boston Globe in 2005, "We are concerned about Dr. Cameron because we do believe that his methodology is weak."[3]

In 1984 the Nebraska Psychological Association issued a statement disassociating itself "from the representations and interpretations of scientific literature offered by Dr. Paul Cameron".[3] In 1986 the American Sociological Association passed a resolution condemning Cameron for "consistent misrepresentation of sociological research".[21] This was based on a report from the ASA's Committee on the Status of Homosexuals in Sociology, which summarised Cameron's inflammatory statements and commented, "It does not take great analytical abilities to suspect from even a cursory review of Cameron's writings that his claims have almost nothing to do with social science and that social science is used only to cover over another agenda. Very little of his work could find support from even a bad misreading of genuine social science investigation on the subject and some sociologists, such as Alan Bell, have been 'appalled' at the abuse of their work."[22] In 1996, the Board of Directors of the Canadian Psychological Association approved a position statement disassociating the organisation from Cameron's work on sexuality, stating that he had "consistently misinterpreted and misrepresented research on sexuality, homosexuality, and lesbianism"

Hey Irvin, since you like cut and pastes so much, how about this on your precious Dr. Cameron...

In 1983, the American Psychological Association expelled Cameron for non-cooperation with an ethics investigation, although by his own account he had resigned from the organization the previous year. Position statements issued by the American Sociological Association and Canadian Psychological Association have accused Cameron of misrepresenting social science research.

After Dr. Cameron submitted affidavits to the U. S. District Court of Dallas in Baker v. Wade (1985), Judge Buchmeyer wrote in his opinion that Cameron had "made misrepresentations to this Court".[13] However, Buchmeyer's decision was later overturned by the Fifth Circuit sitting en banc, which specifically reversed the "misrepresentations" finding by Buchmeyer.[24] FRI has disputed Judge Buchmeyer's assessment of Dr. Cameron's affidavits.[25]

Epidemiologists Morten Frisch and Henrik Brønnum-Hansen argue that Cameron was wrong to infer reduced life expectancy from the fact that deaths among homosexually married partners in Denmark and Norway occurred at a lower median age than those among heterosexually married partners: "Because the age distribution among persons in same-sex marriages was considerably younger than that of people who had ever been heterosexually married, the average age at death among those who actually died during the observation period was, not surprisingly, considerably younger in the population of same-sex married persons." Their own analysis found that excess mortality in Danish same-sex marriages since 1995 was "restricted to the first few years after a marriage, presumably reflecting preexisting illness at the time of marriage".[26] Similarly, critics have argued that obituaries in gay-themed newspapers, which Cameron used to estimate homosexual mortality, do not provide a representative sample of deaths and ignore surviving members of the same generation.[27]

Cameron has also been criticized for placing responsibility for same-sex child sexual abuse on "homosexuals"; opponents state that someone who carries out such abuse need not have a homosexual orientation with respect to other adults.[28][29] Gregory M. Herek, a psychologist specialising in prejudice against sexual minorities, charges that Cameron misrepresented the literature he had reviewed and cited to support his claims, such as a Groth and Birnbaum (1978) study in which none of the participating child molestors actually identified as homosexuals, and none of those who were bisexual claimed to prefer men over women. Furthermore, while Cameron assumed all the same-sex molestations were perpetrated by homosexuals, he did not assume all the opposite-sex molestations were perpetrated by heterosexuals; he included a "bisexual correction" only for opposite-sex molestations that effectively increased the number of perpetrators described as "homosexual" without changing the number described as "heterosexual".[30]

Herek has published a methodological critique of the 1983 ISIS Survey in which he identifies at least six errors in sampling technique and data analysis. He concludes, "an empirical study manifesting even one of these six weaknesses would be considered seriously flawed. In combination, the multiple methodological problems evident in the Cameron group's surveys mean that their results cannot even be considered a valid description of the specific group of individuals who returned the survey questionnaire."[31]

In a widely publicized interview with Midweek Politics with David Pakman, Cameron compared homosexually to drug use[32], a comparison that drew criticism from a number of gay rights blogs, websites, and the Huffington Post

So many folks are seeing Irvin for the hate spewing, bigoted hypocritical glutton liar that he really is.

If there are any "christians" that fathom to wonder why they are despised so much, just take a look at your "Brother Irvin" and you should see your answer.

Again, you prove yourself everything you accuse Irvin of being. You never miss the opportunity to spew your hate and bigoted opinions of Christianity. As for Irvin, he explained in an earlier post that he is talking to those who claim to be born again Christians and still continue to live a gay lifestyle. These so-called Christians are indeed hypocrites and will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven until they truly repent.

As for yourself Andre, everyone who reads your posts know from your tone that you are a miserable, self-loathing individual. It is clearly evident that you have no true and lasting joy in your life. You seem to foam at the mouth everytime you see Irvin start a thread or post a comment. What is your obsession with Irvin? Does his words hit to close to your own home and lifestyle or is it that the thought of reading a post regarding Christianity sends you into fits of rage? It's sad, but unfortunately many others are in the same desperate situation as you find yourself. Your hatred of others will eventually bring you to your knees. I wonder who you will pray to when this happens?

Guessing: Your name seems to be true to your character. You are guessing on a lot of things. But, you are correct by saying I hate bigoted two-faced, hypocritical hate spewing "christians". You are correct in that I don't mind spewing some hatred right back at them. I don't ever plan on relenting in that mission. I love to help morons prove to the public what hypocritical idiots and liars they really are. As for the other things you posted, you are just fabricating inside your own feeble brain. That's a common practice of lower intelligent people. Just dream it up in your little brain how you think it should be, and POOF - you are profoundly correct, right? Dream on.

As for obsessions, it is obvious you missed some obsessions of your own dear "brother". I hope no one is silly enough to "pray" for me. But for you to make statements like everyone knows I am "miserable", or I have "no true and lasting joy" - just places you in the same boat as your other stupid hypocrite cohort(s) who would believe that crap. Just like them, you have the disease of obessing to judge others. You think "christians" are the only ones that can pass judgment and no one should voice any opposition or disagreement.

Get a life, please. You and your friend BOTH need to learn to stop flaunting your childish twisted hypocritical ways. Take care of your own problems and stop bashing others who don't believe as you. Don't try to say I am wrong or make childish remarks because I don't live life the way you think I should. Keep your opinions to yourself, and I think you will find others will do the same. You need to learn to stop pushing your religious beliefs on others - many of us do not like it. If you tried to do it to me in person, I would tell you to shut up. And if you didn't, there would be much trouble. This country gives you the freedom to worship. It does NOT give you the freedom to brainwash or harass those that do not believe as you do.

"This country gives you the freedom to worship. It does NOT give you the freedom to brainwash or harass those that do not believe as you do."

Do you not harass those who proclaim Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior? Do you not try to brainwash Bible believing Christians that they believe in fairytales rather than the Word of God? Again, you cannot see the irony in your own words.

The difference between you and Irvin is that you make it personal. Irvin does not start a thread accussing individuals by name. You on the other hand, personalize your bigoted/hatred feelings towards Irvin.

Oh, and by the way Andre, I live a very blessed and joyous life. Also, I'm not "guessing" when I say you're a miserable, self-loathing individual. I know that you do not have any true joy and lasting peace in your life. How do I know these things about you? The BIBLE. So please don't argue with me, you need to take your argument to Jehovah God and tell Him all about it. Wonder who will when this argument?
