Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good martial arts academy to join for adult classes. I was thinking about Wong Moo Kwan on Ragland road. Anybody have any experience with this place? Any recommendations are appreciated.

dont go to beckley martial arts. they make you sign a contract and they do not fulfill their end of it. they promise you all kinds of things and never deliver. They just hand out belts.

I've heard good things about the one in the mall but never been there.

Go out of Beckley.....I think Wong Moo is prolly the best. Not sure about the mma one at crab orchard. The one in the mall is as bad as Beckley MA.

The best advice I can give is DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT. I have researched this and most credible sources say that If a martial arts place makes you sign a contract its not worth your time. Really good places do not have to bind people with contracts to keep them coming back.

Also, if you walk through the door and see children in black belts or other advanced belts it should raise a flag.

The really good dojo' s don' t advertise, have only a few students, xtremely tough, will test your willpower and endurance, your commiitnent level, your maturity level, and see if you can take the punishment level. You will be used as a " UKi" ( a punching bag). If you had training b4, forget while u r in the dojo Be ready for the physical exercise, stretching, etc. Forget the fancy stuff on tv or the movies.

Simplicity will be the key. It will not be stand-up boxing. It will be 1,2,3. Your opponent will be unconscious, severely injured, or dead.

You may learn 1 or 2 fancy moves, you will be cautioned that is all they are, because the " fancy" sh* t is what gets you in trouble.

That's the idea. I am not concerned with the sporting and competition aspect, but more so for self defense and to stay in shape.

That said, I have no previous training and want to attend a good place. But I want it to be accessible enough for my wife and eventually my son to get involved as well.

I agree if you gotta sign something....think twice. A week in, you may not want to stay but you gotta pay. And if they got a ton of students....that is a red flag too...1 instructor can't teach 30 plus kids.

I have trained at Wong Moo Kwan for over six years, first in Tai Chi Chu'an and now in Hapkido and Ho Kuk Moo Sul. Grandmaster King is awesome and really knows his stuff, having studied martial arts for over 50 years. Here's the website: http://www.wongmookwan.com

I highly recommend this dojang. Come by any evening for a preview. Adults MWF 7-9pm, taichi TT 7-9pm. 5 o'clock classes daily for kids and teens.

How long is the contract for? How much are the mandatory belt fees? How many people under 16 have a black belt? How many instructors are obese?

In a good dojo these things do not exist.

Thanks for the info and invite. What are the fees to sign up? I have checked the website, but did not see anything listed.

There is NO contract. Belt fees vary from gup to gup. No one under 16 has a black belt, although there are 3 who are black belt candidates. One will be over 16 when she receives black belt, the other two will receive poome (is that how you spell that?) since they are under age.

No instructors are obese.

You wont see anything listed. That's what these places do. They tell you to come for one free lesson and get your children hooked (or in your case you hooked) and then after the lesson they take you to an office and put the screws to you to sign a contract. Please think this through. They are good at what they do, contracts anyway. At least that has been my experience. But i have not been to this particular place but someone i know said its the same as the rest.

Also when someone brings a person to class with them they recieve a gift of some sort when that person signs up. That is why you are being solicited

Allow me to clarify I am not trashing wongmookwan I am just giving the general description of a wv martial arts place.

I have never been to wongmookwan at all in my life. It may be a great place. If it is then great maybe i'll take my kids there.

But this is the sort of thing that beckley martial arts pulls all the time. Children with black belts teaching classes, fat women teaching classes, long contracts, belt fees etc.

I can find no info at all for mma academy. No website or anything. Do you have experience with this place? What styles of MA do they teach?
