JFG COFFEE! It was on the "corner" where the old fountain is now...spinning around, making me smile! Just like the old "Welcome to Beckley " sign of a huge hand shaking above the old GC Murphy store..I always thought the hand was modeled after my daddys!

I recall G C Murphy had rubber stair treads going to there basement. That coffee sign I remember the sign also being downtown !! Now if you cant deed it or sue it you cant do it downtown !!!

Hey Rick...funny you mentioned the rubber stair treds at GC Murphy..I remember those too!..and a mechanical horse by the stairs, the smell of pop corn and the purchase of a balloon there. I also remember the bathrooms downstairs that had a box on the front for a dime to turn & open the door! Forget that! I remember crawling under the door to go pee!! haha!

gosh, things were so much more simple then. I remember when you could buy popcorn at Grants and take it in the theater across the street. Murphys had good hamburgers and great milk shakes. Grants also had the picture booth, where you could take your own picture.

Don't forget the purple and pink chicks in the basement at G.C. Murphy at Easter time!

There's a photo of the dismantling of the old JFG Coffee Can in Sibray's Pictorial History of Raleigh County, which may still be available through Beckley Newspapers.

How about the neon sign of the man in a car for Raleigh Motor Sales, and Santa downtown in his little red house near the courthouse.

What a great thread! I remember shopping for school clothes at Kiddie and Junior, Bsharah's, and of course, J.C. Penney. Remember the elevator with the operator who turned the crank and the bell rang? How about Murphy's huge candy counter?(It seemed huge back then, anyway). When I got a little older, prom dresses came from Hub and Vogue or Marie's Dress Shop. Marie would stand outside the dressing room, take the clothes off the hanger, unzip and unbutton them for you to try on. Folks really catered to customers back then! Funny how we found everything we needed within a couple of blocks without any discount clubs or supercenters!

awesome memories folks! Dont forget the S & H Green Stamp store where Rameys is now on Eisenhower..was it beside Pete & Bobs drive Inn?
As a young girl at Sylvia Elem, I remember sneaking to Beavers Grocery to buy candy! Then, getting my "whoopin" from Principle Dewy Bone! hahah! So worth it! |

And the White Cross drug store, I think where Blue Roo is now. Watkins drug store was nearby. Although a little out of downtown, The Spaghetti Shop near Bradley was just one of my favs.
|

The Spaghetti Shop was great! I loved how Mr. Mira would bring your Coca-Cola in the real glass bottle to your table and open it with the opener for you! I remember the picture of the little boy with the spaghetti bowl on his head that hung there, too! What about the BBQ's at Henry's Drive-In? Or the strawberry birthdays cakes from Drive-In Bakery? Remember how the Christmas Parade in downtown Beckley seemed to go on forever? And the Santa and Reindeer on top of the bank on Neville Street? Fabulous! What a great time to be a kid!!

OOHHH! I forgot! Remember Beckley Theater with the sticky floors, the real box office and the honst-to-goodness balcony? It was awesome!

Waterdale pool. All the old shacks that were businesses going up Sprague Hill. Beckley to Crab Orchard was a 2 lane road. W.T. Grant downtown had a nice bulk candy area. Montgomery Ward was downtown. Beckley's finest supermarket was A & P and you could often get bread: 10 loaves for $1.

How bout fosters hardware. Had to go there to get our art supplies in jr. high. I remember when mr mckay gave out samples of pizza at king tut when they were trying to get the pizz going. then it became legendary. But for me Capri Pizza was the best.

|

"Jaws" was actually at the Towne Cinema on Kanawha street. The Beckley Theatre was on Neville.. torn down now and houses the worthless DHHR state employees. |

Henry's Restaurant on Valley Drive was one of the better dining places. Burger Boy foods, twirling satelite and home of the 15 cent hamburger.
The 62NR Good Guys. Leeds Department store. Old wrecked cars placed on the side of the road with white bed sheets over rocks and sand bags with red paint to look like bodies - on Memorial Weekend. Thomas Joyland Tent Circus in the Sprague Holler where Save-a-lot is now. The go-kart race track at the foot of Raleigh Hill. Racing was Sunday afternoon at Beckley Speedway. Virgil's News Stand on Main St. |
