Emperor Barack Opompus today mentioned Social Security Checks as the first thing to not be paid if the debt ceiling is not raised. if there was a trust fund for Social Security would that not be impossible? Is he just trying to scare old people or is it pay back for seniors being wise enough not to vote for him. Well most seniors anyway.

I'll take a wild guess at the answer to your question. The excess amount we paid into Social Security in years past was invested by buying treasury bills, in other words loaned to the government. Now when it comes time for call in the loan, redeem the t-bills, the government needs to pay back the Social Security fund.

The Federal government shut down for 21 days when Clinton was in office. I remember all non-essential federal workers were released, the National Parks were closed, monuments and museums were closed, etc.

I don't remember social security payments ever being stopped...

I think Obama is making a threat that he may not legally be capable of accomplishing. I would like to know on what basis he has the legal authority to interrupt payments to social security beneficiaries.

Yes, I agree this is a "scare" tactic, manipulating senior citizens to place pressure on congress.

Social Security is supposed to be a seperate entity from the federal budget and is not part of the debt.

I agree that I think it is just scare tactics but Obammy seems to be good at putting blame on others.

If he would fire all his czars he hired and the other idiots he has hired to increase the government since he has been in office, the debt ceiling would be several million/billion dollars less right now.

Why cant it be both? An idle threat to scare the elderly AND the "trust" being ravaged over a generation of useless filthy hippies who dont know how to die?

But come on... If you are in the position to "get something done" faced with getting approval from people who are resentful and pissed as hell that they failed on their vow to make him a one termer and hold fast to their credo of saying "No, regardless of what he says" to the point they even turned on their own party head, you might resort to idle threats, underhanded tricks and backroom wheeling and dealing too.

And I really dont remember any long term damages from that shut down. Except to Republicans.
He does not have the authority to not pay social security checks, since spending starts in the House. But given his lack of respect for the rule of law and the constitution, I dont put anything past him. I dont want to sound like a nut case, but I would not be suprised to see this country under marshall law at some point under Obama. It probably wont happen and I hope it doesnt, but it would not suprise me. I think he is under the impression that his election gave him more of a mandate than he has.

I wish they would actually say no. Obama rolled Boehner more effectively than a cheap hooker can roll a drunk sailor.

And now we still have LL making remarks about people being racist? Wasn't it the black woman who said she was now proud to be an American because there was a half-breed and a black woman in the whitehouse? She sounded like a racist to anybody who could comprehend what she said.

I don't need Social Security for my personal finances, but I do need it for the Security it provides in our Social interactions of our Society. I dom't want destitute people around me at K-Mart, makes me nervous. And if it had been left up to all people to save for retirement there would be a lot of destitute mobs around now as there were then when FDR saved us from that.

Our President is right, we are not a deadbeat nation. We will pay our bill to SS and others, whether Tea Partiers want to or not. We are entitled to our entitlements. If they'd raise their interest rates, I'd be glad to loan them some more money. Enough to pay for my SS anyway.

You don't think you're going to get a higher interest rate at your bank, do you?

Not when their rates are tied to Uncle Sam's. Maybe I should invest in some GM stock, that new Corvette looks good. Or just skip the stock and buy the car.
