why would anyone want to coach hs kids if they dont like being around them?its clear that he cant stand beihg around people,

Why would anyone want to coach the baseball team at Woodrow when the kids don't even know how to play when they get there? Little League and Babe Ruth here are a JOKE. Kids throw wrong, bat wrong, field wrong. Go watch Little League and Babe Ruth and see what I am talking about.
I never knew Beckley to be awesome at baseball. I think they have been in the state tournament what 6 times since 1950? Three of those in the last 7 years. Its not coaching, its talent and that is something that doesn't exist here. You can't win in AAA with kids throwing 75-77 mph.
90% of the kids in Beckley grow up playing basketball and soccer. I think it shows when they get in high school to. The soccer program is one of the best in the state and the basketball team has 7 state titles since 1990.
The funny thing with baseball parents is that usually its their fault that kids can't play. Couple of the parents have coached the kids up until high school and if you know anything about baseball all you have to do is watch and see how deficient they are in key areas. But anyone can sit in the bleachers and be Joe Torre.

Ahh Topix, the perfect place for disgruntled for parents.
When I graduated we had a guy by the name of Tom Parham who coached for 25 years and went to state tournament 2 times in that span. Daniels has been to the state tournament 3 times since 2003.
Parents ran off the baseball coach at Hurricane a few years ago saying he didn't know what he was doing. He won the AAA state title the year before. Coaching high school athletics in this state is a lose/lose situation because of uneducated fans in the stands. You would be a fool to take that 1,500 or whatever it is to coach high school sports.

The good ole days had The Kelly family, Doug Epling, Tim Epling, Parham and company working hard for baseball.
The Education system is destroying sports in Beckley as their leaders on all fronts of WWHS care more about being in a clique than helping out the young men and women.
Thank goodness the Linda K Epling Stadium and that middle school baseball program they started down in Beckley is a great first start in making baseball successful again.
I am a big fan of UpperDeck baseball center, the WV Miners baseball program where I already bought my tickets for the year :D, and several other identities that do have the kids interest over the travesty that WWHS does in 90 percent of their sports.
Football, wrestling, baseball... it is all about being in that education clique of people who care more about themselves than getting people who love the sports to make athletics solvent again at WWHS.
Can anyone name the time it was when WWHS could compete with double A schools in these areas??? Or even most single A schools.
Lilly, Daniels, Serrat ( however you spell the name ) Cooper, all a bunch of self absolbed destroyers of sports in our area.

Parham went to the state tournament 2 times in the 25 years he coached. That is hardly successful in my opinion. Maybe Daniels isnt a great coach, but he has already been to the state tournament more times in only 10 years.
Not sure what middle school baseball you were watching, but the one I watched at Epling stadium the majority of the kids still didn't field or hit correctly.
Doug Epling has done a great job with the new field though, very nice stadium. Just I don't see any incredible talent so far in that middle school league.
#9 May 24, 2010
By "education clique", do you mean teachers? Everyone has a right to pick their profession. And, if you want to coach in the school system, the preference is teachers. Not really a clique!

no aa plays wwhs n anything but baseball and ww beats them 42 -0 agianst the great inda!splits with shady and kills the others get your facts correct!
#11 May 25, 2010
It isnt all about winning, it is about being a role model.
You can not take 25 years of politics in sports and in 1 year flip its direction around.
Compared to little league, you are saying the middle school was no different! hahahahahaha!!!
#12 May 25, 2010
In WV, you have the term professional, and non professional coaches.
If you have a teachers degree and teach in public school, you are considered "professional" and you get preference to coach. If I am not a teacher and apply for a coach position, the teacher gets the job regardless of talent to coach.
Everyone knows in beckley that WWHS teachers who coach baseball, football, and wrestling have their own little group that do not let what they call "outsiders" or non teachers in to do anything.
If you want to coach and are not a teacher, and you want to coach at WWHS, or middle school, it isnt a secret what they do behind closed doors.
They gather their teacher club together ( affiliated with that sport )and choose a teacher to apply for the sport, and the non teacher IF he or she has the ability to out coach a sport in WWHS or public school... the teacher coaches get one of their own to apply so the teacher gets the position over the best qualified.
The baseball field at WWHS was one time used with all venues from American Legion, to high school, to babe ruth. Daniels destroyed the baseball program.
Football ... we do not even have to go there... a coaching staff that promotes kids only playing football, and not other sports... and they wonder why they have no school spirit, and their athletics are pathetic.
Wrestling, there isnt a coach on their program who probably has 10 years experience wrestling among them, and they make their team sit in bleachers not talking to anyone... everybody frowning and acting mean.
#13 May 25, 2010
Uhhh nimrod, The wrestling team couldnt beat stoco jr high, and YES they have play AA teams in the past.
Wrestling was in the coalfield conference, hate to tell you.. all AA schools. They run away from AA talent now... this year they got destroyed by SS, Lib, and INDY in wrestling... AS they do EVERY YEAR! Last time i checked those teams arent AAA... lol
The coaches STOPPED doing it because of their inability to BEAT AA.
The only thing WWHS kills, is TALENT
#14 May 25, 2010
Like I said, its hard to kill the baseball program when it never existed in the first place. When Woodrow made the state tournament in 2003, it was the first time it had been there since the 1980s. When they made the state title game in 2007, it was the first time they had been there in over 20 years. I hardly call that a program. The basketball team is a program. The soccer team is a program.
The middle school baseball league is a good idea, but so far has been nothing more than glorified Babe Ruth that you have to pay to play in. I dont see any Brandon Gravelys or Jordan Yosts out there in the middle school and or little league. You could tell at an early age that the majority of those guys were goin to be stars when they got to high school and on to college.
The only thing destroying baseball in Beckley is the lack of talent and the lack of coaching the kids receive in the lower levels.
As for American Legion, why would Woodrow want them on their field anymore when they wrecked it and had people constantly mad at them? Two of the Tabor's have been in and out of jail quite a few times in the last year or two. Why would u want a team like that on your field? The new coaches are 100% better people, but they are still fighting the bad rep that was left when the Tabor's were doing it.
Just silly to say a program is being destroyed when no program ever existed in the first place.

To BeckleyFan, I am partial as I am an Epling lol, so let me address a few things if I may.
The WWHS baseball field was built by my father. My father built it for one reason, so that the community would have a place to play baseball.
The baseball field was originally destroyed back when Babe Ruth brought Sand on the Kentucky clay it originally had on it back in the eighties. It was my father, and Parham and others who privately repaired the field, not the school.
Secondly, I still remember when my brother Tim was running the American Legion Post 32 baseball team, and he scheduled many months in advance a tournament which the school system agreed to do. After all my father designed, groomed and maintained the field... the concession... etc...
So several teams come from all over to play on that field, and what does the baseball program at WWHS do... they show up in the second inning of the first game, and walk out on the field and inform my brother and the teams that they had to get off the field.
From that day forward baseball suffered at WWHS hand. MY OPINION of course. The field was always maintained to highest regard, until that point.
The lack of talent in baseball is a lack of training for talent, not that the community has no talent.
The talent goes where the talent is best developed. In this case, many in my opinion head outside the Beckley area soley because of the lack of coaching at the higher levels of sports.
You call a first year program where coaches are going to be trained at proper training their teams typical? You are stating that because the system is broken, that a modern leap forward in baseball training isnt going to help?
Time will show the talent will get better through my families philosophy at training the child, not stacking a team with talent and ignoring the betterment of the undeveloped athlete.
The UpperDeck training facility has had 3 people in the last two years go onto play pro ball, and to go off with college scholarships in girls Softball alone.
The UpperDeck girls softball team last year won the ASA WORLD SERIES. WON IT i will repeat.
Talent exists, but the developement of the player has to be more important that the developement of coaching egos.
A program always exists, it is the talent of the people overseeing the talent that is to blame over time.
At our program, we have Jeff Wallace former professional pitcher of Pittsburgh Pirates. He alone has more knowledge about training than you or I. To say his input with teams during their practices in the stadium, are no better than Babe Ruth is ubserd.
But I understand your remarks, and am in no way questioning your sincerity. But I do know what my family has dealt with over the years. WE are building a facility to BETTER baseball the right way, not with politics.

No the Epling family has done a TON for baseball in southern WV and I will never question that.
I am split on the event you are talking about. WVU Tech and whoever it was were scheduled to play a double header at Woodrow that day. Woodrow was already scheduled to play that day also. The plan was that the double header was suppose to be over by the time Woodrow was scheduled to play. As you said, it was barely into the second game when it came time for Beckley to play.
Now I agree they shouldn't have been kicked off the field, but at the same time it is Woodrow's field and they shouldn't have to cancel their game or make their opponent wait while a team that has no affiliation with the Board of Education keeps playing.
At that point its a tough opinion because yes Doug did build the field, but its Woodrow and Board of Education property so they shouldn't have to wait for anything.
On your last statement, the only really good player who has played outside of Woodrow is your nephew Kendrick Epling.
I also have to disagree that Woodrow baseball fell apart after that. From 01 to 07 they went to the state tournament 3 times, title game once, and had a TON of talent. That talent no longer exists. You had Brandon Gravely, John Sullivan, Yost brothers, Parkulo, Yeargo, Josh Wright, and so on. That type of talent is no longer at Woodrow. Those kids were already good before they arrived and just had to be groomed. The kids now dont even know what double play depth is, which is something you should learn when your 10 or 11 years old.
As I said earlier, your family has done great things for baseball in this area and hopefully will continue to do so.

The reality is, some things do cost money and you get what you pay for.
The little leagues and Babe Ruth programs teach to a certain level baseball and to by knowledge it is a free venue.
I would guarantee, that the vast majority of people could reasonably afford Upper Deck.
If you ever need an attorney, you have 2 options, pay for one, or the public defenders office. The Public defender is a free service for those who can not afford to purchase a private attorney.
In baseball, Upper Deck does not get people like Jeff or the other members of the WV Miners training staff, for free, therfore there has to be a cost involved with spending time to train youth at that level.

Also to Beckleyfan,
The Incident which we are now discussing, dealing with the baseball incident. Think about what you just said -
QUOTE "...but at the same time it is Woodrow's field and they shouldn't have to cancel their game or make their opponent wait while a team that has no affiliation with the Board of Education keeps playing.
So by them scheduling a game AFTER they agreed to host the tournament, is justified just because the school chose to schedule a game after they agreed the dates would be available for 4 to 6 teams to travel to WWHS from around the state?
With all due respect, the flaw in that arguement is the following:
1- They had the event scheduled prior to scheduling the high school game.
2- They waited till after the tournament started instead of notifying the tournament creators well enough in advance to make other arrangements.
3- The coach also stated on the mound that Tim would NEVER play on that field again.
There is never a Lack of talent in the area. There is a lack of availability to train the talent properly in Beckley... those are two totally different things.
When you have a high school coach who frowns against their players coming to Upper Deck, and the threatening that these players may not start because of being part of Upper Deck.... surely you can not consider that not a part of the problem?
The reason why baseball is hurting in this area, is because the system is flawed in Beckley.
The talent here gets training through travel teams (Good programs) but when children and parents are not held accountable for their actions, and the child has no incentive to get better... usually they will not get better.
As a softball coach this year in the little league system, I have found many things good with what they are doing and attempting to do. I also see loop holes that although allow teams to win games at their current age groups, it hurts them in the long term.
I actually had a team puposefully alter their line up 3 times in a game, without notifying anyone... change the lineup with their batting order in 2 innings, and pitch a young girl who was not even on the roster. lol
Coaches who think like that, parents of that team should be very alarmed and should never let their children learn from that type of philosophy.
Likewise, until the school system allows people to coach who are qualified to coach, and allow the ones who are not qualified to coach, yet have teaching degrees to not have preference... the system will always place politics in front of what is best for the children.
My opinion of course :D
Thanks for the kind words for my family. I know you truly have the best interest at heart.
