I've actually thought about Greater Beckley. Public school really hasn't been an option. A parent I know who's son attended TCA and then tried public school said there was a huge difference, that it was like going from heaven to hell. She never put him back in
TCA due to the lack in academics but was switching to somewhere else in Oak Hill I think.
Right now with the cussing, using cell phones in class, cutting their arms, kissing in class and a 13 year old talkin about having sex with his girlfriend doesnt seem alot different than public school. I've tried voicing my concerns to the principal on more than one occasion and i only get excuses, told its not true, defense and that my child perceives things wrong. A kid knows more of whats goin on in the class than the teachers and prinicipal does. You can remember when you were in school when what was goin on and what the teachers and your parents thought was goin on wasn't the same. I have the kind of kid that has always come to me and told me things that most kids don't tell their parents and I don't think for a second that she just makes stuff up or when she sees 2 of her classmates kissing that she is perceiving it wrong, and yes thats what I was told. My child as never ever been 1 to make stuff up even when she was very small she didn't. So all that being said are there any comments on Greater Beckley or somewhere else? I don't want to switch her somewhere else and it be no different. So any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Where I live, in the Greater Kanawha Valley, Christian schools began springing up probably in the late 70s, early 80s, and have always been for troubled youth to attend. They don't get any better, but that's where their parents put them.

With many children having been expelled from public schools, the Christian schools were the alternative. Also, behavioral disordered children are sent there. They aren't a good environment, for sure, but such children need to go somewhere for an education.

Greater Beckley is just like all public schools. I know a lot of the students who graduated from there and they are as bad if not worse than the public school students. Grant it, some of the students turned out ok. I went to a Christian school and its just as bad there as it is in public school. I saw cussing, gossiping, perversion, cutting, etc. I think the reason why Christian school students turn out worse than public school is because they live a sheltered life and when they go to college and get in the real world they are lost. They fill they have to fit in, so they go crazy. GBCS academics are no better than other schools. Concerned mom, I'm not saying you have this attitude, but most parents who send their kids to Christian school think that the school can raise their child right. A child needs guidance at home. If a child receives guidance at home they can go to any school and turn out well. Public school academics prepare you for college better and gives you the social skills to make it in the real world. Not all Christian schools are bad, but I would not suggest any Christian school in this area.

Anyone else have any suggestions about a christian school or comment on Greater Beckley?

I am confused. If you are a concerned Mom, why donít you go to Greater Beckley or any of the other private schools in the area and talk to the administration for yourself rather than seeking direction on a public forum? I donít think you are concerned about anything but starting a bunch of crap. It sounds like you have a spoiled brat and the people at the school is not giving you or your child your way and your not happy. Be a concerned mom and check out the schools for yourself.

If you go to any school and ask them about the school they will tell how great they think it is.Why are you so upset about someone asking others opinion on Topix?I mean you are reading Topix arnt you ?

My point is simple; your children should be one of the most important responsibilities in your life. If you were making a life and death decision about a health issue, I would hope you would go to a Doctor not topix. Making decisions about your childís education should be no different. I enjoy reading topix but I sure donít want to make life decisions based on what is being said on here.

Please stop rumor mongering. U said you have been raised in church, so learn what the chursch teaches.
If you have a gripe with someone, go to them in private with a witness, and the reasopn together. Then if that does not fix the solution, go to that persons leader in the church aka pastor, and have them handle it.
So far all I have read is you saying something with no factual basis... in my world that is called slander.
Havent found where that is in the bible for christians to be embracing. So stop creating drama, and get yourself back to learning and living the bible, and not just "being raised" in the church.

OMG...Are you seriously gonna act like a jerk because I want some real information on these schools. As the other person on here stated these schools paint a beautiful picture of what there school is but the truth is told from the people who have experienced it. I am touring these schools but I also wanted to here from someone else who has been there. My child is far from a spoiled brat tryn to get her way at school. She's very respectful of her teachers and authority and I have always been told so and I'm not trying to "get my way". There is no way to be got. I want a 0 tolerance policy for the things these kids are doing and influencing others to do and I only get told my child is a liar in so many words. Nothing I've said is slander, it's mere facts. The teachers and principals will tell you also but the problems are still continuing and these kids aren't being watched closely enough and punished for their actions harshly enough for it to stop. I love my daughter's teacher, he's wonderful and I feel does the best he can with these rebellious kids but he needs backed up on the suspension he wanted to enforce on this behavior.
And to the other person saying I wouldn't go on topix for a health issue. I am only seeking advice from other parents or students who attend these schools and can tell me how they really are, like I said they will all say how wonderful they are just like Trinity did and they were for quite some time but things have changed there and I'm sure the new parents who just enrolled weren't warned of all these things their children may be exposed to just like these other schools won't tell me. I am doing my part and touring these schools but I want as much information as possible before a make a decision and I feel I am doing the right thing.
I should be able to ask for some advice from other parents in addition to doing my own research on these schools without being smarted off to. If you don't have anything nice to say then just don't respond.

I don't see the ages of your kids anywhere, but that determines a great deal. Middle School kids need certified teachers who can help them build a base of knowledge to work toward HS credits. I'm told by a reliable source that the TCA is severely lacking in academics.

Also, I know at least 3 students @TCA who were placed there by parents who thought Christian school could "fix" their kids. The parents are the biggest part of the problem, though. So, TCA inherited the public schools' problems.

I think it pays to visit schools and see for yourself before you make such an important decision. We do have some awesome public schools:
Bradley, Hollywood, Crab Orchard elementaries. Shady, Park, and Independence Middle. I think all high schools have similar problems, so I'm not sure which one would be"best".

Look, I am a student there. Even though the high school may not have the best academic program in the world, and may need some fixing, you can look at any of the high school students and can tell that there is a difference in them and in a "normal kid". Even those who go to church and are in public school, there is still a difference when compared. The staff at the school may not be the best teachers as far as education goes, but WOW the things I have learned ovr the years I have been there. The counsel, they have given me, the character they have helped me build, and the integrity they have instilled into me goes beyond any education I think I could ever recieve. Look, heres the bottom line. We are learning as a high school to teach ourselves by reading and studying, not listening to a teacher yap us to sleep. What they do yap thoug, is uplifting, encouraging, and inspirational things. Come to the graduation on Tuesday at 6:30 in the churches sanctuary and see if the spirit of God isnt there.

Even though I do not agree with some of the teachers at the school, I am still learning a lot from them. They are all amazing examples, for me as a student, to follow. They are all great role models. And look, they just started the High school program a few years ago, they are still getting the act together. God help the school if Mr. Peterson isnt there next year.

BTW- Mr. Peterson has never been paid for the classes he has been teaching at TCA, he has been doing it volunteering, from his own kindness and commitment to his students.

School is what you make of it. If you are the right kind of kid, you'll look up to the right kind of people, no matter where you are. If you can't get a decent score in the SAT or ACT, your self-monitored "reading and studying" doesn't matter. Also, My child has a great deal of integrity and social conscience. It was instilled at home, not by teachers and other kids.

I'm not going to debate the difference between public and private schools. However, if someone doesn't know chemistry or upper-level math, they can't teach it. I want my child to succeed in college, so those things are very important to me!

Most responsible parents go to the school and find out for themselves.

Only thing you are doing is creating drama for the sake of slandering.

You called the poster a Jerk, and then tell them to be more nice.

No, freewill, not all graduates this year will know chemistry or upper-level math. I expect my child to have the option, though. Values are gravely important, but instilling them is not the job of the school. If we all took care of parenting at home, the schools would have more time for subject matter.

I simply came on here for sum "inside information" on these schools. I am touring these schools myself which ive said a couple times now. Like ive said they will all say how wonderful they are but until i talk 2 people who have experienced them i wont know the real facts. And 2 the 1 i called a jerk if they didnt act like 1 they wouldnt get called 1. I never said anything out of the way for some1 to act that way. I asked 4 information on some schools and thats all i want. I dont have time 4 people being smart elics just bcuz they have nothing better 2 do. And the only reason i mentioned the bad things going on there is because they are serious concerns of mine and i dont want 2 change schools and the same things be going on there. I dont consider that slander or talking trash when i had a good reason 4 stating those things and not 2 mention they are facts. I think the teachers and principal would be honest and tell you that. Im only on here 4 additional information on some schools besides what i will see 4 myself when i go. Trinity lets out Wed. and I'm scheduling my tour 4 then so my daughter can go. Any info on some private schools in the area would be appreciated. Anything besides that is uncalled 4 and unnecessary.

Again, as a previous poster has stated, you coming onto this site is not helpful, only hurtful.

Your inability to see that this forums is not here to inform but to harrass, shows your intent on writing accusations without FACT.

You have entered a lions den holding a injured dove, and you wave it all around as if it were a peace offering. What do you expect?

The fact is, if you are a conserned MOM there are serious avenues to go through. Have you been to the princaple... the leader of that church and voiced your conserns? VERY DOUBTFUL

You simply came ehe and posted HEAR SAY so you could feel better about your feelings.

If this is christian consern, I want no part of it!

You have problems with someone, GO TO THEM and address it. Don't come on here with an alias and slander. That is childish, and disgusting.

I find so much humor in you wanting ď0Ē tolerance since your daughter was one of the only children in the program that did not follow the dress code that was sent home with the children. You want to do nothing but cause problems and if your child is influenced by your behavior, I may need to pull my children out as I would not want them to learn such stuff from your child.
