its a shame with all the robberies and break ends the city cops only worry about dui's i guess thats easy money for them we the citizens needto do something about this. I have been robbed before and knew who it was, still they did nothing about it. i thought they were here to protect us...

I just got robbed recently. My neighbor gave the police a vehicle despcription and license plate number. I called the police four days later, and they still had not even ran the plate number. It is ridiculous. I could have conducted a better ivestigation myself. Unfortunately I have to work for a living and dont have time.

Agreed. I get the importance of dui's, but there's real crime in this town, and it all boils down to the pill epidemic. I read about sweeping busts of small time pot dealers, but most potheads aren't smashing car Windows for change... The local police need.to start worrying less about revenue and more about the real problems. But it'll never happen.

There was a time when they really looked for lawbreakers, now they do nothing and wait for the dispatcher to send them on a complaint. makes the job easier.

There's a big difference in DUI arrests and burglary arrests. The officers are proactive about DUI's because they are easy to catch. Simply wait near a bar and pull a couple cars over. If the police knew when and where a break in would occur I'm sure they would stop it. It's a big city and there's only so many officers. I think the problem is in manpower.

my house has been robbied twice, both times I reported it to the police, I'm still waiting to here about it, I guess it is a lot easier to wait outside a bar and pick them up for 2 or 3 beers they make big money for that..... the hell with the tax payer and the home owners.

My in-laws were passing Captain D's on Robert C. Byrd drive yesterday and were hit with rocks from the bike trail overpass, their window was shattered and the car behind them was hit as well. They call the Beckley Police and were told that they can't watch there all the time. I guess that patrolling that secluded spot in the evening is just too much? What if a rock hits someone in the head and kills them or causes an accident? My father in law went back and shined a flash light up there and a man screamed at him and started throwing rocks AT HIM! If the police would have went over there (they are like 2 minutes away from there) perhaps the person could have been caught. So watch out for that area people, there is an adult or large teenager throwing rocks not only at cars but at people, so who knows what the person is capable of. People walk their babies on that trail, and let their kids ride bikes on it too. Does someone have to get raped for someone to care? Luckily they do have full coverage insurance that covers vandalism and they didn't get hurt, but the situation could have been a lot worse. Beware Beckleyans.

That trail has been trouble from the beginning, there are countless robberies and a couple stabbings that have happend since they created it.In the beginning there were supposed to be cameras, and police patrols butI guess buying their police motorcycles took priority over spending the time and gas money protecting the citizens.

if you look beckley has more than enough manpower other citys have fewer officers and do alot more, beckley cops hang at red lights gas stations and look for speeders

I don't have Exact numbers so let's just assume Beckley has a population of 18,000 people. Let's say 45 or so officers. That a 1:400 ratio. Let's also assume that half of those people are law abiding, honest, never get in trouble citizens. So that's still a 1:200 ratio. One officer to babysit 200 people. 8 hours a day. 365 days a year. That leaves 16 hours a day that those offenders are without an officer. Now Im sure officers aren't assigned people so that's a bad example. I'm just saying that it's a big city. Lots of people. 45 officers. They aren't mind readers, can't see crime before it happens, and can't see into the future. They take there shirts off just like you and there isn't no superman insignia on there chest. You think you could Do a better job? I'm sure i couldn't.

The average ratio across the country is 2.3 Officers per 1000 population, slightly lower in major cities, i.e. New York, Chicago, Los Angeles.
Data available from COPS Program US DOJ.

It just seems as though they could do more when they are called. I have been robbed twice, once my home and once my car. Both times, I did all the footwork and pretty much handed the people that did it to the officers, even had to convince them to take fingerprints on the one case because they weren't planning on doing it. Neither time did they seem interested in doing their job , and neither time did the people get in trouble or have to pay for what they stole from me. Meanwhile , it is very clear that they hang out in restaraunts , and waste their time pulling people over for rediculous things like a head light, or tail light.

Could I do better ? I think I already have.

The cops can't go to a crime scene and just because you have a person named as a suspect doesent mean they have the authority to arrest that person. They need to build a case using eye witnesses, surveillance footage, statements, a confession. And that's only if those are available. An officer has to have what's called reasonable doubt to arrest a person. In a warrants narrative if the magistrate feels there is enough reasonable doubt that the suspect is guilty of the crime a warrant can be issued. If not - denied. Just with a name they have a place to start. Not a gift wrapped case ready to bring before a jury. As far as fingerprints - good luck. It's almost a useless tool. Conditions have to be perfect. Crooks nowadays are smart - they wear gloves. This isn't CSI out there. They try there best. The legal system is set up in favor of the bad guys. Don't blame police - blame out founding fathers.

In my previous posts I stated an officer needs reasonable doubt to arrest a suspect. I actually meant probable cause. The judge/jury needs reasonable doubt to convict a person.

I wish I could see your view on this but unfortunately I can't get my head that far up my ass. I don't know where you come up with those numbers but your ignorant. There are never any state police out and if they are they won't answer calls. so by the state police not answering there portion of the calls it falls on the shoulders of the Sheriffs Dept. And for the record the Sheriffs dept is short handed and they only have 3 to 4 people to answer to the 100,000 that populate Raleigh Co.
