The shoe store that was caved in by a snow storm at the time was called H & M Shoes. The store was on the corner of Neville and Heber Streets, right across from G. C. Murphy's. When I was a kid the building was a theatre.

Polka Dot Shop and Leeds. Have we mentioned that Earehart's used to be on Valley Drive (I think) LOL. Beckley Loan & also the brick building across from old Heck's Ollies was a loan company, later used as campaign headquarters and connected with the Susman family.

oh..the the Beckley phone exchange was Clifford -(CL= 25 & we only had 2 exhanges - 252 and 253) many people had party lines.

From some photosfrom a 1957 Land 'O Hill business direction, I see a King Kole Cut-Rate on Johnstown across from Pinecrest.(I don't remember that)

And wasn't there a city trash dump on the by-pass (near the skate park?)- seems as though I have this memory

Margies grocery was actually called Fair Deal Market and there was another store right below but I cant remember the name. The owners name was Bessie. It might have been By-Pass market, where the car wash is now. Also Gunthers market where the rent a center is now.Can you remember the names of the gas stations that were there? There was a Gulf station where Judys is now.I think the Exxon has alaways been an Exxon.Cant remember.

Fairdeal Market -- YES - but I always called it Margies (Thanks!)

Way back the Exxon was probably Esso

A good site for Raleigh County history that puts dates on some of the places we remember

Pete and Bobs - 1952

1939. The Pagoda drive-in restaurant

1949. Construction of Valley Drive (later Robert C. Byrd Drive) begins.

Feb. 1928. The first traffic signals are installed in Beckley,

June 21, 1924. Waterdale, the county’s first public swimming pool, opens. It closed in Sept. 1963.

hotpants, mini-skirts, stacked heels with black mesh stockings, Dr. Kildare and Dr. Ben Casey shirts, nehru shirts, garter belts (no pantyhose at the time):-)

Was that Ralay or the Raleigh Club and pronounced Rah-lay?(I dunno)

Not in Beckley, but a popular club -- Stardust at Daniels.

Few more for the oldies (I don't remember these, but I knew a couple of folks who worked there)

Eli's Bowling Alley - approximately across from the Beckley National Bank - now Chase (I think)-- manual pinsetters

Hopkins Bowling Alley (was automatic)

The small airport at the Plaza Mall area (I remember this) but also had several trampolins, at one time, close to the road.
