Remember them well

Here's an article showing the sputnik (or "Whirling Satellite") & saying that Beckley had the first Burger Boy in WV

The First Burger Boy in the state opened in Beckley in 1963

http://www.mywvhome.com/old/bbf.htm

The Thomas Joyland Carnivals were located in the area of the old Hecks, now Ollie's location.

I'm thinking somewhere on the wwhs alumni site there might be a picture of the carnival. Lots of pics to go through though. MANY old business ads and a walk thru yesteryears.

Dot's Packette, the old Sprague Post office, Waterdale, Acme Supermarket, Don Brown's Esso (Exxon, still there), Club 16, Sugar Shack (teen hangout), Derald Rollyson, seems like there was a music store and maybe Doy Brothers (ah, so long ago-hard to remember) oh...and Southern States has been there forever.

I miss valley skating rink
spaghetti house (mom used to work there, best salad in the world)
the heritage house.. mmm bread pudding

And I still can't figure out if that was a "bonanza" in the place up beside the hotel on the hill after you pass the crossroads mall, most recently a bar (right after you can get on the interstate) does anyone remember this?

They also had a great selection of hot cooked foods, at very reasonable prices to make a carry-out "dinner" with roll or corn bread.

(clarification)I was referring to the old Acme above for the stamps and Tobacco store)

Also the Acme store (Pic-Pack at the time maybe)- had a horse racing game. Pick up as many cards during the week as possible, listen to the radio for the winners & hopefully pick up some cash)

Back to the town area --

I believe the Lewin brothers (or maybe family because I think I remember a sister) had a couple of shops uptown. Harry's Men Shop and a department store on Neville that had ladies clothes on one side and men's on the other.

Interesting article on Max Lewin and Israeli hospitals battling for this estate.

Israeli hospitals battle for man's estate

JERUSALEM (AP) The death of a quiet menswear merchant in Appalachian coal country is reverberating in the Holy Land as two leading Israeli hospitals wage a legal battle over the man's estate of more than $5 million.

It seems like there were several different restaurants in that building. Now it's the office of Dr. Per Otte, OMD, acupuncturist.
