Senate OKs food stamps for convicted drug felons

Feb 11, 2011 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Charleston Daily Mail

Feb. 11--CHARLESTON -- Senators agreed Thursday to let felons convicted of drug crimes become eligible again for food stamps, although one critic raised the specter of another "hug a thug" outreach.

That's just great. They'll even get a medical card so they can get free drugs too. Just love these stupid senators. A child could make better decisions than some of our elected officials. Oh yeah, don't forget about the $1,000,000. that our good governor gave to Jim Justice. If he wants to have a PGA Golf tournament, let him take some of his millions and pay for it and not the tax payers. Everything is corrupt.

I think it is great that our elected representatives want to give these poor souls a second beginning in life. They are less likely to go back to jail with these benefits that will help them ease back into society. A wise decision for sure. Without these benefits these poor souls would have hardships and may commit crime again to try to survive and wind up back in jail.

As liberal as I am this isnt a good idea unless they prove they are going to be productive members of society.I say let them get a job and after 3 months of employment and successful drug screening then help them if needed. My tax dollars shouldnt support drug users or dealers.

I think to an extent help should be provided. Especially if kids are involved. I do agree that felons shouldn't have messed up in the first place and should make something out of themselves without any assistance. However, jailtime is the price you pay. Once you serve your time, there should be some leniency afterwards. It's hard for a felon to get a good job without the education. Hard to get the education when you are forever denied Financial Aid... just saying.

ARE YOU EFF'N SERIOUS!!!? So now there is one LESS punishment for being a FELON!! What's next? Are they gonna start giving the prisoners Welfare/SSI/SSA checks? You know so that they have money to start their "At Home" business when they get out!(Meth Making and Drug Dealing)
I think that each politician should have to under go a psych evaluation, before being permitted to run for office!!!

I don't consider dropping out of school, unemployment, or food assistance the 'good life'. Far from it in fact. I feel that children of felons who's parent has no chance of a good future only helps to set that child up for a poor future. Case by case, severity of crime, etc... some consideration should be applied.

WOW!! POOR SOULS, my a$$!!! It's pretty obvious that you are either a FELON or the close relative of a FELON...
Look they did the crime so they should NOT recieve ANY BENEFITS!!!!! And NO, it will NOT make them less likely to go back to jail, if anything it gives them the okay to do more criminal acts. They will only WANT or EXPECT MORE from the State!!

aint that the truth , i'm not sure about this it's just what i heard , but i believe the girls on the teen mom part are getting $140,000 a season , yeah that sends a great message to teen girls ! i mean dont get me wrong , just because you get pregnant at a young age doesnt make you a bad person people DO make mistakes , but to glorify it , seriously ? and yeah i know they show the hardships too , but it's glorified more than anything ! they even said 2 of the girls from the first one have already gotten breast implants with the money !!!! did you ever think about saving that money for your childs future ? after all without them you wouldnt have gotten it in the first place !

According to the news article I read, other felons, such as murderers, are already eligible for food stams so why not drug felons. It's very difficult for felons to make a new start in life and they have to eat. Either give food stamps to all felons or to none.

WOW , news to me ! and while i agree people do deserve a second chance in alot of cases , and if someone has been in prison it makes it hard for them to start over ... but as long as there are working families who have never commited a crime or done anything wrong who are struugling to feed their families and cant get assistance then felons should in no way recieve assistance ! and while i dont know thr details of this particular plan , with many other programs for felons they still have access to theese things even after they have been to jail for the 2nd , 3rd ..... you get the idea ! tax dollars of all have been paying to feed them while they were locked up so i think once theyre out they should have to take care of themselves , and alot of people justify it by saying " well if we dont help them theyre more likely to commit another crime and go back , because they couldnt provide for themselves so they went back to their old ways " well there are alot of people struggling to take care of themselves that dont commit crimes , so if they do go back to their old ways , then thats their problem , lock them up and move on ! if taxpayers are going to have to take care of criminals they should at least be behind bars where they cant hurt anyone else

I vote none. You make bad choices- suffer the consequences. But they should be HARD consequences. Not easy, happy, fluffy feel-good ones.

Give them the food stamps... Drug test them weekly, they fail, spend the TAXPAYERS money again to FORCE them into rehab and couseling....Don't let them out until they are clean......Continue drug testing each week, and help them get a job if possible, Or have them work on state roads or projects..(Of course, many would object to that, because those people's self esteem might be hurt if they had to work in public :).....
They fail another drug test...mandatory jail sentence...(They took state money under false pretences, and broke a contract with the citizens who pay the bills)

It seems as though some folks just can't do enough for people, no matter what the circumstances.......Everyone wants to throw tax payer money out the window incessantly, then let's impose penalties on those who abuse that money.

Prison needs to be living HELL like it was 100 years ago. No TV, no gym, no air conditioning. Just hard work and an education for those willing to get one. Make it so bad no one would EVER want to go back.

Blackhawk- I don't know if mandatory rehab and counseling is the answer... look at Lindsey Lohan!

I totally agree!!!! My tax dollars should not go to a drug dealer. Prove to be a productive member of society and take a drug test. Doesn't sound hard to me.
