I've heard that they might be closing due to financial issues. How sad. :(

this is sad. wish people would get their pets fixed and stop letting them run loose then humane society might be able to stay afloat. also adopt a dog dont buy from some sleazy puppy mill. adopted dogs make the best friends.

Let the county run it. They ran it successfully many years ago until the Humane Society came along and talked them into letting them run it, and look at the dilemma they put it in.

What did the county do? Have a guy who sometimes came out and caught strays but mostly just waited on people to drop off dogs? When the county ran it they kept a certain level of animals by killing off more than they could handle. This shelter for the past 2 years has been a "no-kill" shelter.

There are several fundraisers right now. Why not pick one and donate a dollar or two. Send a Christmas card - with any amount. Address it to

HSRC, 325 Grey Flats Road, Beckley, WV 25801 or to PO BOX 115, Beckley, WV 25801.

"The adoption fee is $35.00 plus a $50.00 deposit toward spay/neuter for dogs and/or $40.00 for cats. There is a written contract which the adopting owner must sign which requires that any animal which has not already been altered shall be spayed or neutered by a deadline set by the shelter. It is the responsibility of the new owner to schedule and pay for the surgery and mandatory rabies vaccination. Failure to do so will result in the animal being returned to the shelter."

Maybe things like this is why these places have "financial" problems.:)

There are always specials (I think maybe it's half-price right now) and I think it's a good idea to have the animals spayed and neutered before adoption. Raleigh County is lower than say -- the Southern West Virginia Animal League that charges $100 for adoption.

I'm pretty sure there were adoption fees before it became a "no-kill" center AND I remember you couldn't adopt around Christmas.

Seems reasonable enough. Nobody should take on a pet, regardless of its origins, unless they have the financial resources to properly care for it including vaccinations and vet services. There is no "Medicaid" for pets.

True enough and I agree, however the price would be an impediment to dog lovers who can't afford THAT price..

Personally, I'm not a big dog lover and can't get the attraction most people have for the critters, though I would never harm one..

I guess there is a market out there for a companion that licks you face, "S's" all over your house and yard, stinks up your car, gets hair all over everything and kisses your "A" 24/7.
You can't go anywhere without either taking it with you, or making plans to have someone else take care of it, or feed it for you.
They WILL eat their own feces and then lick you in the mouth.....People seem to love that behavior :)

A lot of people I see, get a dog, play with it until it passes puppyhood, then tie it up and ignore it until it dies.

Basically all dogs do (except for hunting dogs of course) is eat crap and bother people, but to each his own:)

Amen Shootist. U nailed it 100 per cent. Dogs are an absolute aggravation. The people who have them don't take care of them and try to keep them quiet and they aggravate everyone else. In essence, a person has a right to have a dog, but other folks have a right to not be aggravated by them.

When the county used to run it they didn't bum money all the time. They sold a lot of the animals to medical labs for medical research which helped in the creation of new treatments and drugs which was used to treat those horrible old human adults and kids. The county also killed the excess animals and that way they didn't have them running over in numbers. Remember the Bible, which is the word of GOD, says thou shall have dominion over the animals of the earth. That quote is in the first part of the book of Genesis. There is too much worship by people of the creature instead of the Creator, GOD.

So killing and torturing animals in medical labs is ok with you then because of God? Seriously? Selling animals to labs to get locked in a cage and treated like an object is inhumane and disgusting. Killing "excess animals" isn't any better. Animals are Gods creatures. And they need to be taken care of and loved. Loving animals is NOT the same as worshipping them. It's called being a human being with a heart. Please never own any pets.

Congratulations on being an asshole. I hope you're proud.
I just adopted a lovely dog from the Raleigh Humane Society, and am delighted with her! They did an EXCELLENT JOB checking my credentials, calling my very, my groomers, the agencies I adopted my two other lovely dogs through, and they brought our new pet over for a "meet and greet" to make sure all three got along. Now my husband and I are blessed with another member of our family. My three are house trained, don't eat feces, but give plenty of love and snuggles and barely shed. All there we're spayed and neutered thanks to the Humane Society, and $100 is nothing when it comes to supporting their cause. If you can't afford that, you can't afford a dog. Pets take care, checkups, vaccinating, food, treats, and grooming. They aaren't cheap, but they are worth every penny to us.

GOD is the author of the Bible, not me, and in Genesis it says to Adam, thou shall have dominion over all the animals and foul of the Earth. That is not had to understand, as a kindergartener knows what it means. Worship the Creator, GOD, not the creature or the earth. GOD is #1, not some mutt.
