I am looking to buy local honey by the quart and fresh eggs. Does anyone know a local who sells these? Also, info about the Farmer's market would be welcomed! I am trying my best to steer clear of retailers in these areas.

You can get local harvested and made honeys, jams, spices, wines, etc at tamarack. Im not sure about eggs, we get ours from my in laws. I know people who get theirs from the Amish in Monroe county. If you are willing to make the trip there they also sell produce in season, have bakeries, make cheeses, among other things. the farmers market in prosperity is okay too you just have to watch what you are buying something's come in from else where. Up town has a market every year on Fridays I think? I'm not sure how it is tho or when it starts. Beckley.org has more info on it. Hope this helps! If you get any other information please share! Thanks!!

About the Amish. How do I get there? We used to buy from the Amish in Ohio and were never disappointed. Quality food and quality folks. I wouldn't mind a bit to make a trip to stock up. Do you call ahead of time for a bigger than normal quantity? Also, if you have directions that would be awesome! Thank you!
great topic!

Tamarack marks the prices on those goods up too far. Won't shop there. It's a tourist trap. Locals should have another alternative.

Honey, I will get that info for you tomorrow. I don't have it with me right now. I'm not sure if you are interested in meats, but there's a small shop on Robert c Byrd drive called health smart (you can google them) but they sell some beef out of a farm in Lewisburg along with some other interesting ( but not local.) products! Tamarack does push pricing a bit over the edge... But you will pay a higher price for any local product compared to a mass produced one. I think it is a beautiful place for locals to visit.. there isn't really any other place to find locals who make product. I hope others will jump in on this topic. It would be interesting to find new sources!

Thanks so much for the info! I will def look into Health Smart. I'm really not too interested in the Amish Barn near Crab Orchard. Already visited there. As for Tamarack, haven't seen the prices. I did, however, coming down RT 19 towards Beaver right before the Sullivan Road turn-off see a place that advertises Amish honey, etc. etc. I suppose I was just hoping to find a local farmer that had bees, produce, and eggs I could buy all in one place. But, I know that's asking a lot. I am still very interested in visiting the Amish in Monroe County. You can normally buy quite a lot of bulk from them. Thank you!!

Oh, and as far as livestock- there are auctions in Virginia http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/livestock/aucti...
has info on the auctions there. I think there is another livestock auction in Lewisburg, but I'm not sure about info on that..

Thanks again! Yes, some Amish do have telephones in their stores and in a "phone booth" in their community. Sometimes, depending on what order Amish and what their local leader says, they can have a phone in their barn. So, technically, yes you can give them a call. You may just have to leave a message.:) Thanks for all the great advice!
