I have been hearing that no company around is hiring red hats. Does anyone know if this is true?

I would say no. You pretty much have to know someone to get in anywhere around Beckley. Most mines are laying off I think.

Alot of red hats go under contractors I would tell you from experience DO NOT GO WITH David Stanley. They are horrible!!! My Husband was with them. But if you You can find another one then that would be a good way to get in Best of luck to you..Times are tough in with the Coalminers these days.

YouKnowMe is right. Most places are starting to feel the heat with the economy and lower steel orders. If you can get in with a contractor, or start out at really low pay in the guard shack or the warehouse, go for it.

A lot of experience is in the transienent stage; it's a company market at this time, and experience can name their price. When the economy picks up, as promised,'red hats" will again be at a premium.

This is probably a common sense answer, but my DH started in the guard shack. If your situation is flexible and you can start out in an entry level position, just take anything near the mine (parts runner, inventory, guard, truck washing, etc.). If you prove you are a good, faithful worker, it will work out. Just be warned, my DH drove 1:45, for a $8 an hour job, and we had a tough time making it, but now it was all worth it. Another surface mine tip (don't know much about underground), if you have time, go for for EMS card. Not sure how much it is, but several surface mines pay $1 more for medics, and some companies require several per job. Every card you have will help you to succeed.

Getting your miners card is a waste of time if your dad or brother dont work there. Mining classes are a great way for the instructors to make a killing.Too bad they dont help with job placement.

Times are tough right now, even black hats can't find jobs. Thanks to Obama and the enviromental democrat wing of politics.

YES it's true they will not hire Red Hat's an I thank that it's wrong cause people like us has to rake an scrape just to pay bill's we all have to set around an wonder if we are going to lose everything that we worked for. My husband has went to every mines there is but they are not hiring for the Redhats why take the test if they are going to get layed off. We can't even buy food for our family cause of this. so please hire the redhat's back so we can live our lives.

I wished our life could be better than it is now no work no money no money cant pay bills. Right now the coal industry is fighting for it's life. With the Obama administration, his EPA and the environmentalists trying to shut down the industry. It's not only the red hats, but miners with years of experience looking to be laid off soon. Massey is threatened with protesters - including out-of-staters - who vow to shut them down and then they'll move on to the next community. I'm fighting against that happening and you can fight too. There's a thread in the WV Forum where you can join in soldarity with others - whether union or non-union - underground or surface mine - everyone needs to stick together. Write your representatives - tell them what mining means to you, your family and your community.(see info below for link to address) We miners need to stick together http://www.topix.com/forum/state/wv/TFMPVKC1T... link for representatives - click your state - then each name for mailing address http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/
