Some posters are giving incorrect information. Jerry Ball is NOT considered a "model inmate". He is considered a bully and is constantly under surveillance. He has had several disciplinary actions.
He bullies other inmates as he knows he has little to lose. What else are they going to do, give him another life sentence? He is there rotting away at taxpayers expense.
People can concoct excuses for his actions all day and all night. Hogwash. He had alternatives. Did you ever think that might be the very reason why he was found guilty? This was not self defense, folks. Enough of the "poor little kid was abused" crap. He killed 4 family members, including 2 younger brothers. An insanity defense wasn't successful. Wonder why? Because he wasn't insane.
For what he did, he deserves the electric chair.
1- It is a prison EVERYONE is under surveillance, everyone is to be considerd a bully.

2- Your point of rotting away has no bearing on this topic. Any7one arrested falls under that category technically.

3- Noone has EXCUSED anything. You however told posters to check out the DOC website, to view his photo, and you CLAIMED the ball kid had went to pot with hygeine, facial hair, etc... when we went there, I saw a Jerry Ball clean shaven and by the view of his neck, he was overweight, but not as you described.

4- As a employee of the Regional Jail system now going on 14 years, I know far more about Northern and their inmate population than you do. So when I can contact my fellow administrators and Director of Inmate services, they know more than your petty little remarks. Jerry is an INMATE, and several years ago there was a full page artical on Jerry as being a "Model" inmate and a cook... which was all true back then.

Jerrys parents did contribute to his incident, but Jerry is responsible for his actions. Noone has said otherwise.

ANY inmate who commits murder has the option to use insanity. It is a common practice. However if you did your homework on it, you would find out that the insanity plea rarely works. He had a right for his defense team to offer up any explination they wanted. That is how the system works. He does deserve the death penalty. Noone has said he didnt.

He did a terrible thing, and he is in prison for life. The prison system isnt a cakewalk, so trying to throw compassion in the mix of prison is not justified. Jerry needed rep in the prison system, and his disciplinary actions give him that. That is how the game is played.

The Jerry Ball case did not draw the national attention that it would have with 24 hour tv court shows. My recollection was that Jerry Ball was not allowed to use the family car. This was the order of his strict father. He worked some kind of job (maybe a paper route?) and earned some money to buy his own car. Then, the father became unemployed and demanded that the son hand over his money to help the family. Of course, I cannot support this account today. Any more than I have could have when the murders happened. Just another version of the "facts." Query: might permanent mental confinment be more appropiate?

I remeber another young boy who killed his grandparents. I think his name was Tim or Timothy.

I have never heard about the job that Jerry had, although I suppose it's possible.
Through my research, I discovered his father was a machinist for a local coal mine. I also heard the car he went cruising in (that belonged to his mother) was a new-ish Camaro, and they were remodeling the house. To me, all of this points to the idea that although they probably were not rich, I doubt they were hurting for money.

It was a house on Oakley Rd off of Dry hill rd. A friend of mine lived next to them. It was such a shock, we had played with him and his little brother a few times. I heard at the time that his father was very hard on him, though that certainly doesn't acuse his actions. Being a mental health nurse I cannot help but think that it cant possibly be as shallow as it seems. Teenagers do not think about their actions as being permanent...the frontal lobe of the brain is not fully developed until the early 20s and it controls impulsiveness. So sad. I remember seeing the police tape all around the house. Such tradgedy.

I was friends with Jerry & Steven. Me & Steven were 5 days apart in age. We set beside each other in school and were in Cub Scouts together. His mother Betty was our cub scout leader. We walked home from school together almost everyday. I still have pictures of him in a scrap book. I remember this as it was yesterday. I remember the following
Monday at school after this everyone in the classroom was either crying or in shock. I google Jerrys name from time to time to find out if he is still in prison. This is the 1st message board that I found concerning this.

I was in Stephen Ball's sixth grade class at Maxwell Hill Elementary when this happened. He was the middle child. He was such a sweet kid. I remember him being super nice and being picked on by a more popular boy in this class named Mark(incidentally, the filmmaker Morgan Spurlock was in the class; he was always nice to Stephen).
Some friends and I went to the wake. It was obviously very sad and each coffin had a framed picture on top of it, as it was closed-casket. My sister, who went to Woodrow, was in some classes with Jerry. She thought he was kind of a weirdo and that he was picked on quite often. He used to offer to sharpen her pencils and she would let him.
I remember hearing that he killed his father with the bat, shot his mother, and then waited for his two younger brothers to come home and then killed them with the bat. After stacking the bodies, he put a mattress on top of them and then leaving.
A couple years later, I remember him on the front page of the newspaper. He was standing with a woman cafeteria worker and a booming smile on his face. The article portrayed him as a model prisoner. It set Beckley abuzz with rage. Everyone was really mad.
So shocking and so sad. I often think of Stephen and periodically check to make sure Jerry is still locked away.

Jerry Ball will NEVER get out of prison.
He will never have children or grandchildren
He can only have sex with himself and other inmates.
He will never ride a motorcycle
He will never mow his lawn.
He will never hold a puppy.
He will never enjoy a cold beer and a good cigar
He will never visit Disney World or the beach.
He will die on his cold slab with no one around him.
Kristin put him away for good and threw away the key.

It has been a long time, and was horrific and I can understand why the family never talks about it. However, as with any serial killer, mass murderer or whatever people want to call him...there are always going to be people wondering what happened.

I went to school with Jerry at WWHS. I had gym with him. I remember we got to choose, arobics or basketball. Me and a friend of mine, chose basketball. We were the only girls playing basketball and Jerry was the only 1 who would play ball with us. Most of the other boys in the class wouldnt dream of it. I remember him being so quiet and he thanked us for letting him be on "our team" since the other kids didnt want him on theirs.

I remember when this happened. We were in gym and we were all shocked when we were told.

Ok, god forgave him. Now - shall we let the monster out of jail?
I mean if "god" forgave him, isn't MAN at fault for keeping him incarcerated? After all, shouldn't what god decides come first and foremost? Shouldn't we follow the example?

Not meaning to veer off the subject of Jerry, but does God forgive somebody who mocks HIM? Does God forgive somebody who does wrong against a child? Does God forgive somebody who killed another person with their childs adhd medication and then reports it stolen just to save their own butt?? Does GOD forgive somebody who lied on the childs own father and sibling for molesting them when she only done it to keep the disabilty check the child brought in that she said was HERS and the father never paid child support? Does GOD forgive a mother who teaches a child to lie to save her own butt? I could go on, but my friend is going thru this hell and the things she tells me, its truly UNIMAGINABLE!!!!! I couldnt believe it until I went to court with her and found out, all of it is true!!!!!
