Just a comment about the new school lunches being served in Raleigh County. The new food guidelines being forced upon us and our children is ridiculous. Parents if your child comes home hungry from school, they probably did not each much for lunch. I have been checking out the lunches this week and all I can say is skimpy and very unappealing. Rock hard rolls, bland overcooked vegetables, with no salt, pepper or butter. The nasty looking meat is almost nauseating. The children are not allowed to have much, if any, ketchup, mustard, salad dressing or anything that might make it taste just a little better. For some children, school lunch is the only meal they get in a day, and I fear that this change is going to hurt these the most. From what I have seen at our school, most of these lunches are being thrown out, and the children think they are disgusting. I think that the Dept. of Education has really made a bad decision with this change. If I were a paying parent, I would definitely send my children's lunch from home. Parents, check it out!

I do agree that the school lunches have gotten skimpier over the years. And now there is this drastic new change to the school lunch menu. Although I can say this... I was one of those children, who only ate when they went to school. I dreaded the weekends and winter and summer breaks, because I knew I would be hungry for that time. Because of that, I was thankful for ANY food. I can understand making the food healthier, but you can make healthier meals without cutting the serving size in half. Also when I was going to school ( about 8 years ago) if you were still hungry, and everyone had been served, you could go back and get seconds. Second servings were a god send on Friday's, when I knew it would be my last meal for 2 days. Did they also do away with second's ? Because if so it would be terrible for the children who count on school meals for their main source of nourishment.

Lovin it-- I'm very sad from reading your post. I am so sorry that you had to go through that as a child. It breaks my heart. :(

Typical liberals always with their hands out expecting the government to feed them! Pack a lunch already!

West Virginia is one of the fattest state's in the country. The school food needed to be changed. I am sorry some kids go hungry, but when you walk into schools now you see more fat kids than you do skinny ones. All they do is eat, sit on the couch, and play video games. Amazing see the amount of children with diabetes now.

Thank you , but please don't feel sad for me. Unfortunately, not eating wasn't even the biggest concern for me. It was of course high on the list of daily problems I faced, but unfortunately I had a lot more than just that to worry about. Please don't feel sad for me though, that was several years ago, and I can honestly say the problems I faced only made me a stronger person. God has blessed me with 2 beautiful children, a wonderful husband, and the means to provide for my family. Although if you are going to feel sad for someone... Feel sad for the thousands of children who are abused or neglected Everyday in WV and Everyday in the US. Feel sad for the thousands of children who are being beaten, raped, and forced to become child soldiers Everyday in Africa. Yes... My life was rough, but there are a million children who have it 10x worse than I did.

Obviously god had blessed your family enough that you had the means to pack a lunch. Not everyone is so lucky. Please do tell how you would have provided for yourself had your mother and father not been there? And remember some of those children who are counting on school food are as young as 4.

Totally agree with you about kids nowadays sitting around eating junk food and playing video games rather than a game of tag. That definitely has a lot to do with the obesity rate in this state but nothing to do with juvenile diabetes. Type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes) is a hereditary disease in which your pancreas doesn't produce insulin. Adult onset diabetes does have to do with weight because your body does produce some insulin. If you exercise regularly and watch your weight you should never have to take medicine or possibly develop type 2 diabetes. Most children are not type 2 (adult) diabetics. If they don't change their ways thought they very likely will become diabetic when they get older. Scary thought!!!!

I've seen the menu and it looks as though they're serving the same few varieties of meals as they have in recent years with the exception of the new USDA-mandated inclusion of fruit. What I find troubling, though, is that some children aren't getting adequate time to eat because the lunch lines are so long.

How is it expecting the government to feed them? I pay $50 a damn month for my kid to eat at school I would expect for him to be able to get full. They didn't make it 'healthier' they made it cheaper on them. The stuff is crap and it is still from a can and processed.

One of the biggest problem that we have nowdays is the over processed food and over vaccination of our meat sources that are making america fat. This country has food that other countries will not eat and as a result are lighter and have less health problems. While I feel that most kids are lazy and eat way to much junk I think our unclean food plays a major role in it, even helping with causing fatigue.

Could you go out and eat a healthy breakfast and lunch everyday for an entire month for $50? No? Then why in the world would anyone expect the government to do it for such a small amount?

My spouse works as a cook in the School system. She isnt happy to see the children not eating the food as well as they have in the past. Its a shame the parents, teachers and others are giving the cooks a hard time over this! They are simply following orders, or they will be in trouble with there jobs! There is a new Food Program Director in Raliegh County who brought in a lot of these new menus and changes also. Please take it easy on the workers on the front line just doing there job.

Children or anyone for that matter doesn't need to be eating pepper salt or butter. So I'm glad they took it out of lunches.

I do not have a relationship with my parents. People think that the prescription pill problem is relatively new. The fact is is that it has been a major problem for the last decade. It is just now coming to light, mainly because the fact that now we have doctors and nurses who are involved, not just individuals. The saddest part is, is that even if we do away with the abuse of prescription pills, most long term drug users will just find another high. I do not have a relationship with my parents because they choose drugs over their children and grandchildren. And before someone asks, I am not talking about a lil bit of recreational marijuana use. I am talking about prescription pill abuse, and if they do not have pills at their access, they will move to crack, and heroin.

Because 75% of my tax dollars go to the school system already on top of what I pay, I would rather they be fed hot pockets over the disgusting crap they have now. You obviously don't have kids in the school system or you would understand what we are saying. The kids are coming home completely starved because they aren't getting enough to eat and it is disgusting.

There is nothing wrong with pepper and a little bit of salt is ok too, your body needs it. This isn't about being healthy its about saving money. If they want to feed them healthy then serve then a large portion of fresh fruits and veggies and a lightly seasoned chicken breast or something of that level. When you cook do you cook without seasoning?
