I have been a member of LA east for a very long time. Some of their machines might be older but they do have EVERYTHING to meet your fitness goals. Like everyone has said about the Y the kids are running around everywhere and its not nearly as clean as LA East. La East pays taxes and pays for everything that is in their gym. Unlike the Y they dont get donations and grants for everything. Bodyworks is ok if you want to pay alot more for half of what La East has and half the people working out are all on oxygen tanks. La East has their busy times. Just like everyother place and they have Aerobic classes everyday pretty much all day except for sundays. La East members are very friendly. I've never met a stranger there everyone is always willing to help you out and they arent "snobish". Active in oak hill does have cross fit. La East is getting Cross fit within the next few months. Active is also 10 times smaller than LA East. La East isnt very expensive and 95% of all the equipment is working at all times! No you cant have a friend "personaly train" you for money. Although they can "personaly train" you as long as no money is involved. The owner is a personal trainer and he makes his appointment according to what is best for the member. The staff is awesome and friendly and they take every action needed to make sure your experience at la east is everything you expect. They will help and advise you in every way they can. The Female staff is nice to look at to! As for the rest of you that like to bash la east you've obviously never been a true member there. We are all family. So Support a local business and come join our family!
Well, guess I've graduated to "true" member. I really felt like one of the family yesterday..... the roof leaked on my head in 2 different spots in the front of the gym, I couldn't shower because the water was turned off, and 3 treadmills are now down... Who cares how big the place is! If you don't like TRX, then you don't count there...

Do we go to the same gym cause frankly, your comments are BS. I go there 5 days a week and there were not 3 treadmill down. Best part, I showered everyday this week. God, you people are so laughable! One word of advice, leave!

2 tread mills down to the left, one down in the far right of the front gym... as of TODAY. The ONE treadmill on the left has been down for almost a year. 2 buckets in the back to catch water from the roof, are you kidding me? Good advice, but with a contract, kinda hard to. No wonder they lock you in. The water issue was yesterday...

Dear Tam,
A few members informed us you were on this site and unhappy with LA East. Its obvious you are unhappy with LA East Fitness. Please log onto our website www.laeastfitness.net , give us your name and account number and we will terminate your contract and purchase you a 6 month membership at another fitness center. Our members are important to us and we value their opinions. If you are really unhappy, please try this.

Thank you and I will probably take you up on that. My husband and I will be out of town next week, but when I get back I will contact you. I never shower/wash there, and would not have said anything about the water, I'm sure it wasnt off all day. I had just popped in after work and was going to freshen up and change before dinner, and it aggrevated me. I wasn't even there to work out, just came in to clean up.I usually am not a complainer, but found the "true" member person offensive, like we can't complain about a service we pay for. that's all. I appreciate you being professional about it.

I was a member of LA East for 2 years and decided to try the Y. I really like the Y better! In the summer LA East's facility is very hot. I'm not sure if their air conditionar is broke or if it is to expensive for them to turn it on. They would attempt to keep the place cool with fans and opening the door but that was not much help. I could not work out their in the summer because of the heat! The Y has newer equipment with TV's on their aerobic machines. The Y is older but Clean and air conditioned. The Y has a very nice pool and they offer a lot of classes throughout the week at various times. I felt that the classes at LA East were very limited. There is a track and basketball court. The Y just has more to offer and as far as the kids that everyone else speaks about they have never bothered me. They have their own workout room with equipment specialized for them. I think the Y is far better than LA EAST give it a try!

I dont know how I stumbled on this thread, but since i did I feel obligated to say that LA East is a great place to work out. David and Cindy are great folks who are passionate about fitness, they are also passionate about helping thier members reach fitness success. So thanks to them and the LA. East Family. The classes are great, expect to be pushed the the limit if you step into crossfit. If you prefer to do your own workout there is plenty of room and equipment. Members are freindly

I shopped around before joining anywhere. Bodyworks had the best deal! I paid no sign up fees, paid $35 for the first month, and $35/month for full access to the facility. The staff are very friendly, the place is very CLEAN (they have staff that go around and use sanitizer on the machines throughout the day), and the hours are great!
how did you get a membership for $35?I was told when I applied that it was over $50.

I stopped by LA East and looked around last week to decide if I wanted a membership there. My family and I are new to the area and were wondering what the place is like.... and if there any other options around. Every gym has it's problems, I'd like to know if there are any big ones before I drop 500 bucks adn sign a contract. The lady that signs me up isn't going to let me in on the bad stuff. I noticed the hot tub was empty... didn't stick around long enough to see if the place was really clean or not. Any input???
I thought at first the place was with the national chain LA Fitness which would lend some credibility to it, but when I searched with Beckley zipcode none were listed. Then I noticed that the name wasn't exactly the same which makes me question the intent... acquiring business off another businesses name and reputation.

LA East is the worst gym I've ever been to in my life, I'm a WVU student that went to visit a friend in Beckley over the Summer and decided to try LA east to get in a workout, but as soon as I walked into the gym this guy named David (I was told he was the owner) was yelling at another member!!! I've never seen a manager or owner of any business act like this, & I'm from NYC so I know all about rude people. I walked out and will never go to that place again!!!

I have been a member of both LA EAST and the YMCA.

My experience: YMCA was the cheapest option, has more for a family unit than any other place. The reason why I did not like the YMCA was that the membership required a savings account for direct deposit. The free weights area was very small. The YMCA offers the most variety, with swimming, racket/handball courts, aerobics, basketball, and walking track.

LA EAST membership, cost more than the YMCA but it did not require a savings account, and allowed payments with cash. This gym had the most free weights equipment, allowing short wait times during the busiest hours. Children were also present, but they were in the daycare. In shape bodies wearing skin tight clothes, is a common sight. During my few years of lifting there, I never really noticed any family units, other than young married couples.

Bodyworks membership was the most expensive. I noticed a complete absence of children there. Bodyworks had the newest equipment, but not as many free weights as LAE. Bodyworks was full of older people in baggy sweat pants. Many people were undergoing rehab with professional trainers. If I was seeking a professional trainer, I would have chosen Bodyworks.

For a self motivated individuals seeking Freeweights I would choose LA EAST, for Families the YMCA, and for individuals who need a professional trainer and all the necessary equipment Bodyworks. All three gyms were cleaned daily, just some of the places have heavier traffic than others, and track in more mud from the parking lot.

The gym equipment is falling apart. The roof leaks. The air is broke 75% of the time. The place is getting nastier by the day. The employees and owners have attitudes. GIANT potholes in the parking lot. The steam room has been broke forever and they won't fix it. All this and more.......OH, And you better not miss a payment or disagree with the "maintenance fee" (which is a joke since there is NO MAINTENANCE).....What a great place!!!!!

L.A. East is a great place to work out. It all depends on what you really want. If you want a place for families/children, join the YMCA. They have newer equipment and many more options for getting in shape. L.A. East has older equipment, but it is in good shape. It is quiet there most of the time. The facility is clean, although the hot tub is out of order. I wish they would fix that. The dry sauna does work.

If you like free weights, LA East is the best choice. The YMCA has a small free weight room in the basement in a small room that feels like a dungeon.
