I stopped by LA East and looked around last week to decide if I wanted a membership there. My family and I are new to the area and were wondering what the place is like.... and if there any other options around. Every gym has it's problems, I'd like to know if there are any big ones before I drop 500 bucks adn sign a contract. The lady that signs me up isn't going to let me in on the bad stuff. I noticed the hot tub was empty... didn't stick around long enough to see if the place was really clean or not. Any input???

L.A East is mainly a because of arrogant snobs
BodyWorks is good but expensive
YMCA is ok but its mainly a because of teenagers looking to play hook-up

When I go to the gym I wanna workout not have to go through a maze of young adults making out and getting each other numbers and gossiping around the workout area

I go to LA East and have no problems there. It's plenty clean there and yes the hot tub is down now but they are fixing it. People leave you alone if thats what you want.

The Y has problems and Body works is expensive as hell.

I've been a member of LA for 2 years. It's ok, but not great. The hot tub doesn't work much. They have a good day care, their TRX classes are nice. But the Y has them too. I hear lotsa grumbling by the members, some that I know have left because they wanted more classes. There are some guys that have been checking out another place in Oak Hill, but not real familiar with that one. Body Works is nice, but I think it's kind of small. The YMCA is crowded with kids alot. So, you have to pick your poison. I wouldn't sign a contract at LA before checking out the other places. If you want a trainer, LA East doesn't really offer one full time. They have the owner who is certified, but it's not his job, and his time there is limited. They don' t allow anyone else to train people there either, so the Y or body works will be the best options for that.

I have both a membership to LA East and Bodyworks. Like them both, even though the equipment is older at LA east, I like having a membership there because Bodyworks is closed on Sunday, and I usually have to work Saturdays and can't make it to Bodyworks before they close. I enjoy the aerobics classes at bodyworks (pilates, yoga, step, etc). The free weight/bench press area at bodyworks can get a little busy because it is small, but you usually don't have to wait long. As for LA East, the hot tub has been closed for a while but it was up and running this weekend. It sometimes gets too hot in the summer because for some reason they won't run the air conditioning but I freeze my butt off at bodyworks in the winter. LA East now has TRX which is a difficult but kick butt class that I would recommend to anybody. The Y has it too, but I have never been there so I have no opinion.

I go to LA East. They have the largest free weight area. that's what I look for. They are lacking in some areas though. I think the classes at the YMCA are the strongest, although body works has some nice things going as well. The Y's the cheapest, LA East is the midrange, and Body works has a more "private" feel, as it is a rehab center as well. It's the most expensive. Crossfit is in Oak Hill, pretty advanced training. for a family, the Y has something for the kiddies, and as was said earlier, LA E doesn't really offer much as far as personal training, but lots of wide space for do it yourself. Not much floor work there by the employees, their nice, but they aren't trainers. So -- check them all ouit and see what each offers. LA East Day Care is popular in the area as well.

I've had a membership at LA East, YMCA, and Bodyworks.
Bodyworks, is a little more, but you get what you pay for. The place is always clean, you never have to wait to use the machines. I love the aerobics classes.
The Y is just full of kids and dirty.
LA East, was okay, a little to crowded and the people there were not as nice as the peeps at Bodyworks IMO.

I have been a member of LA east for a very long time. Some of their machines might be older but they do have EVERYTHING to meet your fitness goals. Like everyone has said about the Y the kids are running around everywhere and its not nearly as clean as LA East. La East pays taxes and pays for everything that is in their gym. Unlike the Y they dont get donations and grants for everything. Bodyworks is ok if you want to pay alot more for half of what La East has and half the people working out are all on oxygen tanks. La East has their busy times. Just like everyother place and they have Aerobic classes everyday pretty much all day except for sundays. La East members are very friendly. I've never met a stranger there everyone is always willing to help you out and they arent "snobish". Active in oak hill does have cross fit. La East is getting Cross fit within the next few months. Active is also 10 times smaller than LA East. La East isnt very expensive and 95% of all the equipment is working at all times! No you cant have a friend "personaly train" you for money. Although they can "personaly train" you as long as no money is involved. The owner is a personal trainer and he makes his appointment according to what is best for the member. The staff is awesome and friendly and they take every action needed to make sure your experience at la east is everything you expect. They will help and advise you in every way they can. The Female staff is nice to look at to! As for the rest of you that like to bash la east you've obviously never been a true member there. We are all family. So Support a local business and come join our family!

lol Sounds like FYI might be a little more than just a "member". Can't blame them for wanting to stick up for their place..... Didn't think the comments were that bad though other than Rob's. Sounded pretty oblective to me. I train at Glade,it's nice, but it's members only. sorry bout that. Might have been better to listen to them and take note instead of saying they aren't "true" members. They apparently pay their dues just the same. I Hope you find a gym that meets your needs.

who owns LA East?

David Chin owns LA East. His wife is the main speaker in the commercial they have on T.V. He used to manage John Eye Big Sandy in Beckley where he got the name for being the biggest a**hole around, no one wants to work for him. He later took over the Grands Furnishings that came up in Beckley not sure if he is still there or not.

He is a fitness maniac so I'm sure his gym would be adequate for your workout needs. So if the price is right I would go for it!

I shopped around before joining anywhere. Bodyworks had the best deal! I paid no sign up fees, paid $35 for the first month, and $35/month for full access to the facility. The staff are very friendly, the place is very CLEAN (they have staff that go around and use sanitizer on the machines throughout the day), and the hours are great!

i agree with "love it" Body works is great but if your looking for a family thing this isnt the place for you no kiddies allowed i pay the same as love it 35 a month with only a 3month contract. Its clean, its friendly, and its not a pick up joint. Very comfortable atmospher for those still getting in shape people work out in sweats not tight work out cloths.

I didn't know that. I always assumed they were the most expensive. Have to keep that in mind when my contract comes around. I knew that the place was very clean. Being closed on Sundays wouldn't be that big of a deal. Good info.
