Hello,

I have a "No soliciting" sign cleary posted, yet people come to my door and start with "Hi - I am not selling anything... and they start talking about how their company carries the greatest products and so on..."

Isn't this soliciting? Can I call the police if they do not leave after I ask them to?

If someone knows, please reply.

Thank you.

Due to potential crime, I do not open my door to anyone unless I know them. We have a window close by the door that I open and ask what they want. I almost always say "Thanks but I'm not interested".

If I look out and they have a clipboard, or a bible or book of mormon, or a big knife, I don't answer the door.

I also have a "No Soliciting" notice and sometimes we get them anyway but it has reduced the number. I don't know if it is illegal but it should be. Don't expect your government to do anything constructive about it - they haven't done anything constructive in a long time as best as I can remember.

For example, in Beaverton and Washington County we have a HUGE problem with people operating cars that have very loud exhausts - I call them runt-mobiles because the drivers are almost always little runt a--holes. This is illegal and it is a blatant crime that every person can hear clearly yet the police do absolutely nothing about it. This is the state of our nation today - people will intentionally cause noise for the sole purpose of irritating other people - they have no respect for other people - this is one of hundreds of reasons I am glad the Supreme Court has affirmed our right to keep and bear arms - our entire society has broken down - our nation has failed in almost every manner largely because of the lack of personal responsibility of the citizens. This lack of personal responsibility is the root cause of:
The Mortgage Crisis (it is irresponsible to sign up for debt you cannot pay)
The Energy Crisis (it is irresponsible to drive a gas guzzler, live in a monster house, etc, etc)
The personal debt crisis
The huge prison population
Students graduating high school who cannot read or write (irresponsible parents have not taught their children any discipline whatsoever - because of this many of them will grow up to be absolutely worthless)
Rampant Crime
Rampant Meth and drug use
Jobs going overseas (it is irresponsible for a corporation to ship jobs overseas)
Rampant Corporate fraud (such as Enron, the Mortgage Crisis, etc.)
People blaming firearms manufacturers for deaths from guns (the gun didn't do anything)
Pollution and environmental crises of every description
Questionable Social Security Funds (irresponsible congressmen spent the funds on pork)
Bankrupt Medicare system (irresponsible Americans think the government should keep them alive at all costs until it is physicaly impossible to do so - so they get to live out their last years with no quality of life whatsoever, but cost everyone A LOT of money)
The list is endless.........

Is there ANY hope. Not one iota. The United States is history. The ONLY thing that would have a prayer of saving our nation would be a benevolent dictator - and I doubt the people have the smarts to elect one if one were to run.

Such a benevolent dictator would not need to be on any ballot - they could campaign as a write-in candidate (maybe on things like You Tube), post their agenda clearly on the internet for all to see, etc. I think one of the first acts would have to be putting in prison the current congress for high crimes and misdemeanors (treason) that has gotten us in our current mess.

Ah ha! I didn't read your original post clearly enough. IF you close the door and they still are bugging you, I WOULD call the police.

For your safety, I recommend not opening the door to people you do not know. Open a window, preferrably high enough or small enough that they can't get through easily, and talk to them through that. OR, you can cut a small hole in your door (about 2" x 2") and buy a small door to mount over the hole on the inside of the door and a small grill to go over the hole on the outside of the door so they can't stick something through the hole. Typically the "screen" is part of a Knocker on the outside of the door. Not sure where you can buy them - used to have one on an older home.

I have a 2x4 that I put on the floor between my door and the wall behind so they cannot kick the door in easily. The noise of an entry attempt will ensure that I am ready to greet them if they finally do get inside.:)

The following should be outlawed in every state, but because we have a do-nothing bunch of useless, worthless criminals in congress who are owned by corporations (their crime bosses) nothing will EVER be done about it:

Selling personal information on your customers.
Selling personal data collected by the county, state, federal or local government.
Selling, giving away, collecting or in any way using citizens personal data for anything other than the specific business transaction initiated by the citizen.
Making phone calls for soliciting.
Sending mail for soliciting.
Knocking on your door for soliciting.
Soliciting you on the street or in front of the grocery store or in the checkout line at the grocery store.
Soliciting you ANYWHERE.

Don't hold your breath waiting on these to be outlawed. As I've said before, our nation has failed, our government is an abject failure, and our nation is DOOMED. Darn it.

Your home should be your castle, a refuge where no person can disturb your peace unless you invite them to do it. Your right to make noise ends where my ears begin. But not in a nation of blithering idiots such as the USA. Ronald Reagan got his wish: God Blessed America. With Idiots, morons, jackasses, jerks, naer-do-wells, criminals, and irresponsible a--holes. Be careful what you wish for.

YES YOU CAN STOP THEM! I JUST HAD A SOLICITOR IN MY WINDOW THE OTHER DAY. HE WAS BANGING ON THE GLASS AND HIDING, BANGING AGAIN AND THEN HIS FACE WAS IN MY WINDOW. IT WAS HORRIBLE. HE WORKED FOR SOME ENVIRONMENTAL COMPANY. THE POLICE SAID IF I HAD A SIGN THAT SAID "NO SOLICITATING" THEN THE GUY WOULD HAVE BEEN ARRESTED. I WANT TO BAN ALL SOLICITORS IN MY TOWN BUT AM LEARNING THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE. IT IS HORRIBLE THAT THIS DAY AND AGE THEY ALLOW PEOPLE TO GO DOOR TO DOOR. CALL THE POLICE THE NEXT TIME SOMEONE COMES TO YOUR DOOR. NEVER, NEVER OPEN THE DOOR. I GOOGLED DOOR-TO-DOOR SALES AND LEARNED ABOUT MORE ABOUT ARRESTS FOR RAPES, ASSUALTS, ETC. WITH THIS PEOPLE. IT IS SICK THAT PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO DO THIS.
