There are a lot of jobs in the coal industry.

Because they are so damned dumb, either they or their parents neither know nor care where engergy comes from, besides from the wind, Washington, and the sun. They bitch when nothing happens when they push a button or flip a switch. To them, it is either clean green energy or Earth-hurting capitalistic corporate greedy mean energy. They do not intend to live in a park or the dark, but want mountain people to exist in a pristine but poor national park. Still, with regret, you can bet that some of those dumber coal miner whiners, who are unemployed and sat, still voted for Obama because they still will proudly say, "Ahhhmmm uhhh Dimuhcrat!"

Their not killing coal, the power companies have made plans decades ago to use cheaper coal from out west,$8.50 per ton in comparison to $83.00 per ton in the mines around the Ohio and the states in this area.
Also the replacement, refurbishment to EPA standards and maintenance on the coal fired energy plants are over twice what it would cost to replace them with the natural gas fired energy plants most power companies are moving to, plus the fact they have a fraction of transportation costs, all they have to do is put in a pipeline and some pump stations.
Nothing new, business will go the cheapest route to make the most money, it is always that way, your seeing the bottem line mentality at work here.

Liberals can be mean, when they declare that the backward barbaric natives should live primitive to keep their country and mountains clean and green and pristine; so that it looks good, if and when the bright white enlightened ones visit from their elite 'hoods. The grateful not hateful natives can then kiss their asses, despite their wasting of mother Earth's gasses, unlike the unwashed masses.

Only college kids and outsiders are whinin', poutin' and shoutin' about coal companies leveling and then landscaping the mountains; the local folks don't want them to stop the jobs or stop them from leveling the mountaintops, or the redevelopment plans to create more level land.
