Mechel Bluestone’s mining operations are located in West Virginia, one of the oldest and largest coal mining regions in the United States (the Central Appalachian Mountains). Mechel Bluestone is headquartered in Beckley, WV.
Mechel Bluestone comprises three mining complexes — Keystone, Justice Energy and Dynamic Energy. These complexes include four active open pits and four active underground mines.
Mechel Bluestone produces high quality low, mid and high-volatile hard coking coal. In 2011, ROM coal production was at 5.4 million tonnes with coking coal accounting for over 90% of the total. Total JORC ore reserves of Mechel Bluestone amounted to 146 million tonnes, as of December 31, 2011,. The bulk of the reserves are low-volatile hard coking coal mined at Keystone.
Run-of-mine coal is beneficiated at on-site washing plants. In 2010, Keystone commissioned the newest facility, the K-2 washing plant with an annual capacity of 3 million tonnes of ROM coal.
Mechel Bluestone development plans for the near future include revamping of existing underground mines and open pits.
Mechel Bluestone has river and railway connections to deepwater sea ports of Norfolk and New Orleans. Both ports can handle Panamax-class vessels with Norfolk also capable of handling Capesize-class ships. Favourable location of Bluestone’s assets enables the company to develop its coking coal exports to both Europe and rapidly growing Asia-Pacific markets as well as to diversify shipments to the new global markets of Latin America, including Brazil. In 2011, Mechel Bluestone exported over 50% of its finished products to Europe and Asia. Mechel Bluestone became one of the first US coking coal producers to deliver its products to China.
Acquisition and integration of Bluestone coal assets helped Mechel Mining emerge as a major global coking coal producer with access to all seaborne markets as well as substantially expand its range of premium grade coals.

Russians built a new coal plant in Keystone.12 million dollar processing plant a couple of years ago.Not much coal being mined apparently because Norfolk Southern had to lay off 200 workers because there wasn't enough coal to ship down there.
