Slighted on COPS grants

Full story: The York Daily Record

Perhaps the York Police Department was penalized for being honest. Why else would police commissioner Mark Whitman say the city was honest in its application for federal stimulus money to add police officers.

Maybe the honest part was "There's no crime here", as the Mayor always says. Therefore, the Feds felt York didn't need any new police officers.

Watch what you say Mayor, or it'll come back to bite you.

creative grant writing? Isn't that why Whitless and Brenner allow crime to remain in York City? So that they qualify for the grant money?

What, it didn't work for once and NOW we have a problem?

I am wondering if the grant included a research component that evaluated the success of the proposed program. Now I am wondering if the grant proposal had a delineated goal instead of a boilerplate goal such as reduce crime.

If York wants to get Federal money it needs to have a plan in place to evaluate the effectiveness of the programs they are asking funding for.

This grant was written to add 6 officers in the High School, not for fighting the "perceived" crime we have running rampant on our streets! And they wonder why we were "slighted"?????

Thanks I do remember about the schools now that you mention it. Six officers to be hall monitors...I think George hit the nail on the head.

In the past the Grants writer was not allowed to be honest about the crime in the city. Mayor Brenner will not allow a bad picture to be painted. Why would we get a grant if we say we don't have a problem. Also under Kim Bracey as CD director, HUD was lied to, money that was suppose to be for community policing never went to community policing. When do you see police in our resource centers?

What I don't understand is Harrisburg got that money for the police. I think they will hire 8 police officers. What I fail to understand is why it cost over $1.6 million for 8 cops. What a waste of money. That money should pay for atleast 20 cops.

The answer is that the $$$ adds up quickly. 8 Officers X $40,000/yr (minimum) plus almost another $20,000 for benefits - approximately $480,000/yr X 3 years with a cost of living increase in years 2 & 3

Doesnt change the fact that none of the police depts in York County received approval. The City was not the only dept to apply. But unless you see the scores on the aplications, there really is no way to compare the fairness of the decisions.

$40,000 a year and the York police don't even do their jobs very well. This is why they need to close all the labor unions. Pay them $40,000 a year just to drive around.

Obviously, John Doe 000069 has no clue what police offciers do, or what they put up with during their shifts or their off-duty time. $40,000/yr is not nearly enough for what they do, not to mention the risk to their own lives.

Big Deal--you tighten your belt like most work places, suck it up, and make due. York is not a thriving metropolis like NYC or LA, and York is without those big city crimes, for the most part and not in need of such funds or deserving, unless you find college students peeing and drinking to be huge crimes. Perhaps these cops should take a pay cut, as many other state workers have. They make way too much as it is for their lack of education (as a college degree is not needed to become a cop). Moreover, why does York city need supped up Chargers at say 50,000 each? I was with a group of people watching two of them roll up on an elderly woman the other day, yelling at her, as if it was common procedure. Perhaps they should focus on treating their fellow citizens respectfully and kindly as they expect (and demand) to be treated. Moreover, why do they need super fast cars when it is such a small city, and if we can recall, how many times have overzealous York cops crashed and hurt and killed innocent people in chases in the city.

Yeah, those V6 Chargers are really fast dumbarse...they didn't even get the hemis! So I doubt they paid more than 25K for them.

What else do you want me to say??? I discredited your post on "fast" "expensive" cars.... in fact if your read earlier stories, they were paid for out of a federal award of money.

York, Ford and Chevy no longer make a police package vehicle, so Dodge is currently the only major domestic auto maker offering a police vehicle. Also, most of the cars were bought with grant money at the state contract bid price. A**hats like you, should do a little research before you open your piehole.
