What a trip down memory lane! I lived in Beaver Falls, in a neighborhood called 'Gravenhurst' for a few years when I was about ages 6 to 9. This would have been from 1956-1960. There was a whole 'gang' of girls my age in the neighborhood. Kathy Moretti's dad owned a Drug Store, Sheila Waite's folks owned Waite Ice Cream, and there were about six more of us- we used to have SO much fun! We were also friends with a family named the Taylors who owned Taylor's Department Store. I remember that their house was near a china factory- not sure which one, could have been Mayer, I can't remember. The company's"dump" for defective or broken dinnerware was also there. We were, naturally, absolutely forbidden to go anywhere near it, but kids being kids, naturally we did. Wpw! What treasures we used to find! Good memories!

I have just found some dishes that my mother bought in the 60's from a grocery store here in Fredonia that would buy from a truck that came through. On the back they say "Mayer China, Mayer Falls Pennsylvania". They have the Initial B for our last name. I have six of them. Is this Beaver Falls?

I'm looking for info in a John Snyder who lived in Gravenhurst around the late '50's and early '60's. He was a friend of a friend of mine and I told him that I would try to find out anything about where he might be. Anybody know of him or where he might be? My friend lives in VA and CT now and we were talking about how much fun it was growing up in the late 50s and 60s and John's name was brought up. Any information would be helpful.
Thanks.

Wow, what a trip down memory lane. I have lived in Massachusetts since 1987. I went to a popular Chineese restaurant and could not believe my eyes! The plates were made at Mayer China in Beaver Falls. By that time the company had been closed for about 25 years. BF was at one time a thriving second class city with many successful businesses. Remember the B&W, Mayer China, G C Murphy's, Bensons Dept Store, Shoppers World, Montgomery Wards, City Market and so many others that made up the downtown shopping area. It used to be that you could walk the downtown streets on a Friday night, have dinner, and do a little shopping or see a movie.....those were the days.

Hi, this is really old post, but I just found it. I also lived in Rochester in the 50's, moving to Monaca afterwards, then to Youngstown, then to San Diego in 1986. My great uncle was a designer for Mayer china and his wife was in management. Wish I could have played in that dump too. HO HO, my Mum would have spanked me. Went to the same grade school in Rochester and same teacher as my Granma and my Mum. Anyway, just wanted to say hello. The Valley is still dear to my heart.

SRoj- My name is Art Taylor and I remeber going over to the dish pile as we used to call it on Ross Hill. It was where they dumped the faulty dishes from Mayer China. We used to go there all the time since we lived on Darlington Road, just 2 blocks down from Waites Ice Cream store. I even remeber my sister Maureen falling off the rock ledge surrounding that area. Just saw you message now and I live in Phoenix Arizona.Hope this message finds you. Are you from the Crowley family?

. HEllo! Yes, I am a Crowley! My older sister, Maureen, died several years ago, just a couple of weeks after my mom. Jim, Kevin and Kathy all live here in California. I used to love spending the night at your house with your sisters!

How did I come upon this site?! Wow! Do you Beaver Valley people remember the stores having "Dollar Days" just before school started. I remember my mom and aunt comparing the great bargains they found while shopping in New Brighton and B.F. Is anyone around old enough to remember the Sweet Shop in B.F.(1940's)...dimly lit booths...my mom would take me there after shopping for school clothes. Chocolate Soda for her, Cherry for me. Also, my brother worked at Mayer as well as two of my dad's cousins. I have some "seconds" of china that I have used as my "good" china,(silver and gold rims) Very pretty. Made for some grand hotel I think.
