Does anyone remember a kid's show that aired in Beaumont TX during the mid to late 50s called The Uncle Willie Show? Which station did it air on and who was Uncle Willie? Many thanks.

I worked at channel six from 1956 to 1962. I began as a cue card holder and advanced to become an announcer and director. Talent at KFDM-TV included Ralph Ramos, Dave Russell, Bill McDermand, Jack Balzersen, Gloria DeVore, Dick McAdoo, Bill Hammond (Uncle Willy), Wes Wise, Don Mahoney, Jeanna Claire.

I worked the big March of Dimes Telethon with guest stars James Arness and Dennis Weaver.

Lots of great memories.

More later,

Sam:

I remember when James Arness was arrested in Beaumont for, if I remember correctly, during an appearance giving a bullet to a young girl. Many thanks for the information on Uncle Willy.

Can I see some ID? I'm kidding, of course.

You sound like the person to help the poster find the information they were seeking.

I remember the Uncle Willy show. My youngest brother and I listened to it regularly. And wasn't that the same show that use The Teddy Bear's Picnic as their theme song on Saturday mornings?

By the way, Uncle Willie also was on TV for several months, at least, too!

I found this web site while searching for information on Uncle Willie. I remember actually having my birthday party on the "Uncle Willie Show." I was allowed to take 8 or 10 friends with me. It was shown live right after school everyday. It was a 15 or 30 minutes segment. I also remember waiting in line for hours to throw my money in the barrel while seeing "Ole' Matt Dillion and Chester" When our car finally reached the barrel I remember Dennis Weaver shaking my hand and saying he had been waiting for hours to see me!!! I am now 62 years old and remember it like it was yesterday. Can any one help me find the archives of the show? I was on the show in 1954 or 1955 on my birthday in November. Uncle Willie use to call me on my birthday too!

I remember Cowboy John and Black Bart from WAY back. I was just a little fellow when they were on TV, but I know my Mom has a pic somewhere of me crying my eyes out with Cowboy John AND Black Bart trying their best to stop me from cryin'!

Jennifer, if John Garner is your father, he sure made a huge impact on me as a little kid. I would love to find a photo of Cowboy John AND Black Bart.

Aside from Cowboy John, any ol' Louisiana hands remember ol' Polycarp out of Lafayette?

I know this is a forum to discuss the Unlce Willie Show, but I ran across this site on a search for Cowboy John.

I also remember the "Leroy" incident! Omigod, until I saw it today, it was in the realm of my brothers and sisters doing impersonations of that most infamous day. Most kids didn't miss Cowboy John in those days; heck, I was in SW Louisiana and we still got KJAC so Cowboy John was STILL big time. I saw that infamous incident referenced elsewhere and had to mention it here.

I wonder: Did Leroy EVER live it down?

Janice Joplin may have been waiting for Dialing for Dollars to find her, but Leroy's emissions found an entire generation of SE Texas/SW Louisiana!
