According to people Ive talked to the state department is going to audit the high school and they will decide what needs to be done. The super. and board won't have any say in what they decide. Usually in cases like this the principal and assistant principal is fired. I doubt that will happen with Jennings because she has only been there a few months but Land might be history. Only the HS is getting the audit.

They need to go in and fire alot of the ones in charge of our system. Ranked 17th in the worse high schools in Ky. no excuse, What is wrong with this picture, I know most of you are going to say the family life is the blame, some yes but I have talked to people here who say they know kids in the 8th grade that can't read. Wake up America.

I think the board of ed should be gone they are ultimately responsible for this collapse and William Owens should step down immediately.

The board doesn't hire people in the schools anymore, the site based councils have been doing that for 20 years now.

No one should be fired you can't control kids and test scores there is so much more to it. Teachers and kids do the best they can . This is a deprived area in every aspect of the woord and of course it comes down to education too. But the staffs of all schools care and work hard and work numerous free hours to benefit the kids. Most kids try hard too. Audit needs to look at a lot of factors.

Unless things have changed, the site base "recommends" after interviewing but the board still does the hiring.

The way this can be helped is for the public to get behind the school system, help suport it. A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.

The problem is the school tries to keep the community out of the school and yes the whole school board and the site based council needs to be replaced.

Libby,
Can you give an example of the school board A"trying to keep the community out of the school"? My experience with Readifest, Summer Festival, Fall Festival, sporting events, and the school board is they welcome folks in. I'm sure the board would love more input to better the school.

I don't have children in this school system - but many of my family members have children who are in this school system. What I have learned from them is that, many of them, felt that they were unwelcome to become a part of the their child's/childrens school, but once they begin to take part along with their childrens activities I believe that they are learning that those who have been apart of the school's systems are not as unwelcoming as they would have believed them to be and may even welcome them and their ideas and opinions than they would have previously believed.

There is change happening all over our world - And it is for the better. I really don't believe that we have to use it for the worse or to use it to bring about or to bring out only the worse that we can see in people.

There is obvious change that my family and many others see that needs to happen here in the community here in Beattyville. I've seen it myself, and done my own research, I would not enjoy to see it continue on any level, as it affects everyone, on every scale, young and old. But whether it is parents getting more involved in their childrens lives at school, finding ways to speak and trying to find out how to learn whats going on there, just to be a small part and learn how everyone plays a part, to becoming a part of the PTA or something else.

Everyone keeps saying that they don't have a voice but you have to be willing to be seen to have a voice.

The community is the SCHOOL - Without the Community there would be no school, the children of the people in the community make the school a need. If the community doesn't involve itself, then much, grant it, not all of the fault lies with the community, but much of that fault lies with the community.

What are you, sheep? Mice? Or Men and Women?

Are you lead or do you lead yourselves?

You keep yourselves out of the schools because you do not want to be there - I did that to my own kids at their schools a long time ago, and I regretted it for years - And when they became teenagers I almost lost the chance to become involved in their lives. I was too proud to be a part of the community, I thought my community didn't like me and I sure as heck didn't like them.

You'd be surprised at how common you/we all are.

Don't do that to your kids here. If the offer is made, jump on it, the only people you are hurting is yourselves and your kids - The only people you are making look stupid by not knowing what is going on - Is yourselves, and you can't lay that blame on the School. That goes at your door!

I think there are complex reasons why the high school is having problems which range from community economic conditions to curriculum choices. I think we need to see what the audit tells us. These guys are from the state and will give as impartail report as possible of the situation. Then the community should figure out how to help the kids by working with the schools.

I think you need to check again. Unless it is something with the cental office then the local site base does all the hiring for that school. It doesn't matter what the board thinks (suposedly) but we all know how that goes in this area.
