As it turns out, there is about $33 billion worth of unclaimed money in state treasuries and other agencies, just waiting to be returned. That's an average of $280 per unclaimed payment, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.

Forty states participate in a national database Missing Money.com .

You just have to type in your name and your state and see if you pop up in their records.

Another website to try is Unclaimed.org , which has a map of the U.S. You click on a state, and it will bring you to the Unclaimed Property search site for that government of that state. Both sites are officially endorsed by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, an association of state unclaimed property programs, maintained by the National Association of State Treasurers.

If I get any money, will I have to pay taxes to both the state and federal governments on the amount received?

That's a very good question however, I truly don't know the answer. I suggest you check with an accountant. Good luck to you!

Depending on what it is you may have to pay income taxes for the most part 99% of the items unclaimed are paychecks for example if you worked like one day somewhere and never went back to get your check. or unclaimed gift certificates, not ones that you have recieved and didn't use but ones that you purchased that were not used, some companies report this as unlcaimed property but it only applies to ones that are published online where your information is submitted. For example if you bought someone a $50 gift certificate online for ebay and it was never used then after so long it would be reported as unclaimed property and you could file to get your money back. But if you gave someone a $50 walmart card and they didnt use it that is not the sort of thing you would get back as the buyers info is not recorded anywhere for gift cards you buy in a store.
