Federal indictments released Wednesday allege that 14 people defrauded the government out of $351,005 in unemployment benefits.

The indictments charge that each person embezzled public funds, such as unemployment insurance payments administered by the Illinois and Missouri Departments of Employment Security.

Those charged are: Elizabeth Asbury, 41, of Hartford; Clarence Budde III, 41, of New Baden; Gary Cuddy, 31, of Olney; Sheila Davison, 45, of Cahokia; Steven Gordon, 39, of Effingham; Michael Hill, 48, of East St. Louis; Trudie Lindsey, 56, of East St. Louis; Kenneth Loving, 42, of East St. Louis; Melonetria McCallum, 37, of O’Fallon; Robert Pickett, 43, of Venice; Quintin Redd, 46, of Fairview Heights; Regina Skjerseth, 43, of Sage Creek; Rickey Watson, 48, of Belleville; and Nicholas Zezoff, 41, of Granite City.

“Cheating on unemployment compensation is a crime," U.S. Attorney Stephen R Wigginton said in announcing the indictments. "Those who defraud the unemployment insurance program undermine support for an important public program and hurt and insult every law-abiding citizen of Southern Illinois.

Really, what is the point, if someone is cheating on unemployment comp. how could they do that, isn't it the state that takes care of that, like the records on the people applying, if they get approved for it, isn't it the state that does that,

The most common cases of fraud involve people who are working while receiving benefits or those who do not actively seek work. A claimant collecting benefits must report any work, even a temporary job, to the UI office. An intentional failure to do so is fraud. A growing source of criminal charges stems from people who purposely give false or incomplete information when they apply for benefits.
