I am considering moving to Beattyville. I used to run around up there a lil bit. Has the place changed any? I'm a mother and I don't know about raising children there.

Not meaning to offend anyone, but if I had teenagers I would stay in Richmond. There is a whole lot more for the kids to do there than in beattyville. As far as drugs and violence etc...It isn't any worse than someplace like Richmond etc... I feel this way about almost all of our area.
Well

Great place to raise a family. Small schools where everyone knows everybody, neighbors help one another out.
I would not

If you have children, I personally wouldn't. Too many drugs & too much crime. I would take my children where there are many activities to keep them out of trouble. Heck Lee Co. don't even have a football team. There are some really good people, but it seems like the bad ones are taking over. The good ones need to fight against these druggies and take their town back!!!!
pros and cons

nice people for the most part

roads are upkept fairly good compaired to some other counties and road crews keep them clean but the lack of guardrail and people passing in no passing zones is rampent, many places where if you run off the road you will probally die or get seriously hurt

lakes rivers and hiking all arounnd

zero light polution in some places for star gazing

a few places for a moonlight drive (headlights off on a full moon night) but make sure you know the ridge first so you don't go over a 200 foot hill and do not drink and drive, I am NOT suggesting anyone moonlight drive but I like it once in a while, always on a ridge, never down in the low areas.

plenty of fish and game

long crooked drive to closest hospitals

no cell service in many aeras depending on provider

NO WENDYS

NO SUPER WALMART , LOWES ETC

no krogers

lotta needle freaks

NO BEER OR ALCOHOL SALES

No industries/factories to speak of

so, if you have good vehicles, don't mind driving a long way for some items you may want, have the funds to install a good security system and a huge safe for your most prized possessions, then you may love Lee county.

If you are a city person, well, this ain't city life but it is what you make or have the reosurses to make of it, try it, if you don;t like it, move on.

Good luck

Thank you all. My children are young and I'm worried about then growing up around all the violence here in Richmond. I'm from a small town and loved it but there isn't anything for the children there either.
yes there is

Really? What is a good neighborhood to move to?
Well

We don't have many, No places to rent very often, and if there is they are dumps and they want as much rent as somewhere like Richmond. Just remember if you do move here, the closest place to shop is Richmond, Winchester,Mt. Sterling, groceries are higher here, gas usually is, no where to eat no where to go. Nothing for the younger people to do. This is a very very sad little town, And yes before anyone says anything, If I could move from here I would. But it takes alot of cash to relocate, so until then I am here, don't like it but that is life. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

I have three children, and we all hate it here! The schools system in Lee County are behind, and if your child doesn't understand they pass them anyway and don't bother to help in the problem areas. Got a letter sent home from school about a child in middle school threating to do harm to the school. The roads are crap, even the main roads like 11 and 52. There isn't anything for the kiddos to do. It doesn't matter where you live as far as violence goes. A lot of neglected bullying in the schools here. Drugs run wild! Grocery stores suck! Now if your soley on welfare or retired or a drug dealer then you will be just fine. Beattyville is like Harlan, you will never leave beattyville alive!

Well sounds like I would be out of luck as far as my career since I'm a nurse unless I traveled 100 miles round trip daily to keep my current position.

the prison may could use a nurse but the pay is next to nothing, start out maybe 16.00 or a lil more! Stay where you are, there is absolute nothing here!
Please leave

To you people who are badmouthing Lee County: Please leave as soon as possible and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. Take your negative attitudes and get the fcuk out of here. I have lived in several other places, all bigger than Beattyville, and I always wanted to come back here. Drugs and crime are just as bad in Richmond or Winchester as they are here.
no offense

I am not putting down the area. It has a lot of things going for it. But if you have kids, especially teens, there isn't anything other than the bowling alley/fitness center for them to do. You have to go all the way to stanton for a drive in movie. All the way to richmond or winchester for for any kind of real activities for teens. As far as violence, drugs etc...it isn't any worse than any other place such as richmond, lexington, corbin, manchester etc...
I like the small communities. I like the fact that I know my neighbors. I know what kind of people they are. Some good some bad. But at least I know them by name and sight. I like being able to go outside my house in my night gown to feed my cats and not worry about the neighbors catching me. I like being able to have disagreements with my spouse and not worry that the neighbors are going to call the law just because we had a disagreement. I mean disagreement not domestic violence either. I like being able to yell at my children to come to the house without someone calling local social service on me. Yes, yelling in a manner that isn't harmful to kids. You know, Hey time to come in for supper, or bed or whatever.
If you live in a place like Richmond or Lexington you can't do these type things.

yes, not having neighbors to call social services or the cops on you for minor squabbles is nice,, but what happens when you're shot down and no one near by knows it until you are maggot food? Like Daryl Keith? Found the next morning.
Moving away from Lee county is the best thing I ever did for my family. My family was able to get a real education, good job, decent housing, and honorable friends. None of that is possible in Lee county Kentucky.

we are not putting B'ville down we are telling the truth, there is nothing here and never will be, yes the country side is pretty to some, but that does not pay the bills. So bottom line, nowhere to shop, eat, entertainment, no where to go, nothig to do. Dead little sad town, Should be a country song. "Dead little sad town"
