I'm thinking of buying a modest home in Camden for a winter residence. Any advice from anyone who already lives there would be welcome.

It just depends what you are into. I Live in Camden and there really isn't much to do. It is very small and the biggest store we have is a wal-mart. No mall no fancy resurants in facts we have Bentley's and Woods. The are the niceset around. We have fast food places that get played out wuick. But other than that, that is about it. I think it will eventually turn into a retirement town. I wouldn't reccomend it because its boring but Hot Springs is nice!!!!!

Haven't seen any of them in years. I use to live just out side Bearden. Went to school in Thornton.

Still have some family living around the grandparents old home place.

Hello Sandra, I'm originally from Fullerton, ND. If you want a nice 3 year old 3 bed/2bath home in a quiet neighborhood with 1.5 acres within the city limits of Camden....please look at Century 21 website...address is 2924 Bowie Avenue. Camden is defnitely the friendliest place in Southern Arkansas. It's a wonderful place to live or retire to and enjoy the low cost of living. We lived in Camden 7 years and moved to Hope, AR,(job change) this year. We truly miss the people of Camden, the restaurants, the beautiful countryside. We really miss sitting out on our large back patio watching the birds, squirrels, and numerous deer that travel across the back yard. We also miss the spacious master bedroom with huge walk-in closet and large master bath.

Sandra, We ,oved to Camden a year and a half ago. We love it! You might even find a nice place on White Oak Lake (approx. 20 miles from Camden). Deer, fish, birds -- beautiful! We live approx. 13 miles from town on wooded acreage and we really like it. We also have a small cabin on White Oak. We're planning to retire here. Happy house hunting!

lived in camden for 3 yrs. most people are friendly. not much to do in that town. not many good restaurants, hardly any shopping(groceries, clothing, entertainment, etc.) venues. big on high school football. town has the good ole boy syndrome - they don't want change. do have some odd customs.
i really don't think the cost of living is that much better there. if you like a town that rolls up the streets at night - go for it.

this place is dying. lived here a long time. Property values going down--taxes going up. Largest employer is the school system which puts out a sub-standard product. Can not teach those who do not want to learn.

try north arkansas area--much better

I left Camden as soon as I could. There is nothing there and never has been, however I have visited Camden and I was shocked at the way I was treated at some local establishments. I am very glad that I got away from there, it is a much larger world to see than in camden or arkansas period. I have in been very successful in whatever I do in life, and I tend to think that there are a lot of jealous people when you come back home. Being a gay male and open with it I do however think it was a little bit harder for me to cope with camden and the people there, however if you are looking to retire and die, this is the place for you.

Hi Sandra, I was born and raised in Camden. I now live north of u in Canada. You can get a cheep deal on a home in camden, but would you keep the yard? rent for 9 months? roof? plumbing? there is probably no cheaper real estate in the US, the city has realy gone bad since the closing of the paper mill, and trouble with the defence plants. crime and joblessness. I have to say that the daffodil festival is something to see and I would recomend going to see it and shop for a home then. I live in Manitoba, and drive 1300 miles to see it when I can. My folks kinda helped start the festival,{Roxane and Dennis Daniel, Ive shopped for a home down there, especialy in the winter. Boy does that make me shop, but I can't see taking care of it year round, you know they sometimes have to mow the yard in December?

I was born in Camden. It appears to me that Camden is slowly going down. I have heard that the chamber of commerce stops new job prospects from coming into the town. I don't know if this is a Fact. But i have not seen any new jobs coming to town in the past few years. I am a criminal justice major at sau in magnolia and when i graduate i plan to move to a place that can give me what i need to support my my family. I get tried of my two girls complaining about their is nothing to do in this town.Their ages are 19 and 21. So do you feel me ? They are basicly bored.

Camden is one of the nicest towns in S. Arkansas. I temporarily live here due to a government study I'm conducting in the area. My advice would be to purchase a home on high ground, when it rains everything really gets flooded on lower ground. Camden is a pretty town, the people are nice here and friendly. For heaven's sake though, don't go to El Dorado and look for a home. Now there's one town that is absolutely a waste of time. Very clannish, and very snobby people there who think that their opinions are the only one who should be heard. Good Luck to you.

Been here now for a year. At first I found it all strange. What I noticed is people are very stuck up here and still have a lot of racial issues. There is a church in every corner but people only smile on Sunday and forget about a welcome to the neighborhood and everyone is up in arms over the immigration issues. As for a job, well you better know the uncle of the sister of the nephew who works with the brother whose wife lives by the minister whose neighbor just happens to work at the place you are applying at..and taxes...no, not a problem. In fact if there was a tax increase than maybe this entire community and the state might be able to profit and grow. But if you are ready to retire and want to save on the high cost of living elsewhere, than buy some overalls and settle in, just be sure to have a thick skin.
