It might be fun to go to a Spelling Bee to scream and jeer at the kids who misspell words. You could holler out letters to try and make them miss a word.

But it would be hard to make a debate contest into a spectator sport. They're excruciatingly painful to watch. Even the debate judges have to take drugs to make it through the day.

Will someone refer to post #8 and explain why such a statement should be honored now as so many in the past have been bashed in this forum. Does POP expect to be cut some slack or what?
I think Pop is standing up for his friend. It's just another example of Pop's good character.

Or bowling. It's always so quiet when watching the pros play. We could heckle them. "Hey bowler, bowler"
I volunteered to be a judge at a debate tournement. I had never done that before. Didn't take long to realize this is where lawyers come from. I got to meet some good, smart kids and learned a thing or two.

I know that! However makes no difference. Friend or not, if one defends one, one should defend all or ones defense is worthless or self centered.

<quoted text>The point I (and football fan) have tried to make on numerous occasions, is too many are too focused on these extra-curricular activities and want to proclaim how great "our kids" are, based on their sports performance.
To these folks, I say, "Get over it and get a real life!".
First, these kids are in school to learn the things that will be much more important in their life's success.
Sports is entertainment and 99.9% of these kids do not have the talent to make it a career. So, unless they are considering a career as a PE teacher, it will never be anything more than a past-time for most.
So, how many go to the Spelling Bee and Debate competitions and root for their kids and then expect the school to fire the English or Speech teachers, if their kid/team doesn't win?
Over all of the years that our kids have been participating in sports it was never, never because of the thought of becoming a pro in that sport or even getting a college scholarship in a sport. My husband and I have always stressed the importance of education and will continue to do so. Some of the benefits from playing sports are learning to work as a team, learning how to use a strategy, getting off your butt and getting some exercise, and making friendships that last a lifetime. My husband and I get more upset and more uptight over schoowork and grades than we ever will over the outcome of a sporting event.

No, you are wrong.....just ask some of the people on the football coach thread. They think you can make anyone throw a football 80yds....or run a 4.1 40.......catch any ball thrown.....etc...

I don't like my school taxes being spent on expensive athletic programs and facilities. I don't deny the value of physical education.

I just think that "extracurricular" sports should not be funded by school taxes. It's crazy to see every public school dominated by the sports facilities and fields, and coaches making more money than teachers, while a sizable portion of graduating students are next to illiterate.

If a kid wants to play team sports, join a community league coached by a volunteer. I always had more fun playing on a sandlot than playing on a school team.

I left the whole quote in place because I think you said it very well and I agree with it in its entirety.

Yes, and no theater arts building too because I doubt any of the kids grow up to be a great actor.

Do you not think the athletic programs and facilities are all out of proportion to reason and common sense?

Even so, I don't want to pay school taxes to produce professional athletes or great actors. I would be happy if every graduating student was simply literate and knew how many Senators there are.

I want schools to teach P.E. and music and foreign languages and theater arts and video production and whatever else contributes to a good education. But I don't want to spend obscene amounts of money on football equipment, stadiums and facilities.

If the coach was good enough he would see that he has talent but he is too consumed with certain people on the team and those are the only ones he is going to try and make better. Sorry but Louie Means in the worst coach

Of course, you probably think you're kid is one of those with talent, but gets stuck on the bench. I think you're consumed with your own perceptions and a lack of reality.

This is what Tracy's Friend is talking about. I don't have a problem with you disagreeing with someone, but then you attack them. You went after me because I laughed at something Hezekiah said. I can hardly wait for your reply.

That has been my experience with every coach, every sport, every time. What they perceive as talent and what you perceive as talent will probably never line up, it won't matter what coach it is.

The problem is not that I attacked them, but that they bring their own slanderous attacks upon others to this forum. Now, if you go back to the beginning and start reading this thread, you might have a different perspective as to who is doing the attacking and who is calling these clueless idiots out on their own self-centered objectives, which typically are calling others incompetent and screaming that they should be "fired"!

There's a big difference in who's being attacked and who may be standing up for those being slandered, based upon one's own self-righteous vendetta.

I hope you enjoyed the response that you so patiently awaited.

I don't think saying the local high school coach is no good constitutes slander.

All coaches understand that they will be harshly criticized and that most people don't know what they are talking about. They also know that if their teams don't win, they will eventually be replaced.

That's what competitive sports are all about. Coaches are extremely competitive. If it didn't matter whether you won or lost, coaches wouldn't be interested.

Gasbag, you don't need to justify your attacks. That's who you are and what you do.
