So much poor bashing. I am sick of people getting all up in arms when I use my WIC card just because I have a Smart Phone.

You don't know me, you don't know how I have what I got or why I am on WIC. If you don't like the policies, take it up with your legislator, not the person in front of you at Kroger.

Nope, I am right... we need to stop using force on other people.

If you have to use force... you have already lost.

Thanks to all the rich/poor people our economy is doing quite well. As long as we have a prosperous poor class we have consumption which feeds the rich with money so they can become richer. As long as the poor have TVs and iPhones they can see what they "need" to buy to keep them poor. And if the government is able to pay them enough to maintain this standard or living our economy will do well and the rich will become richer. By golly I think I have this figured out!!

Income inequality has the potential for all kinds of social unrest at the lower end of the spectrum. Crime is just the tip of that iceberg.

Income inequality has the potential to create much more than social unrest. It can breed violence and revolution. Louis the XIV found that out the hard way. Do you think he ever thought it can't happen here? Yes crime is just the tip of the iceberg.

We don't live in a bubble. Just because you have all this fancy stuff you are not immune to the ills of society. Wake up.
Society's problems are the concern of everyone in that society. Even you Elaine and Sue.

The poorest 5% of Americans are better off than 60% of the world's population. You can't consider someone poor if they own a three bedroom home, cable TV and a cell phone, regardless of their age.
Actually, your post did not mention anything about those who had a 3 bedroom home, cable, and a cell phone. They were each individual statistics, that say nothing about a combination of any of those things. For example, if 3 out of 4 people have A/C, and 2 out of 3 people have smartphones, you can't simply imply that 2 out of 3 people have smartphones and A/C.

However, I gather from the tone of your post that it wouldn't make much of a difference to your views on classifying people as poor, even thought they have some things. I don't know who you are personally, and I am not here to judge your views. I only offer this. Slave owners once thought they were doing no wrong as they offered their slaves shelter, food, and work... conditions which may not have been met had they not been brought to America. You may be willing sit back and say,'oh, boy we have it good" Elaine. I will not be joining your fight for the status quo.

People in this country should spend a little more time listening to people from other countries about what poor is. People tend judge poor based upon their own perception and never find out what poor really is. The United States is a land of opportunities second to none and we take it for granted. So bad!!!

The world has always had beggars and will always have beggars. The problem is we tend to paint all the needy with one brush. It is very easy to place all the needy into one category and treat all as beggars. We need to dig a little deeper and find out the reasons for their situation and what the solution is. Where did the old welfare board go. Every community had a welfare board composed of volunteers from various churches and other organizations to serve to screen applicants for welfare help. Then, because of the possibility of discrimination, they were disbanded and the function was placed in the hands of professionals in governmental agencies. These agencies had no input from the community and allowed fraud to happen. These agencies justify their existence by placing as many people as they can on the welfare rolls.

Let me add: These agencies should be judged on how many people they remove from the welfare rolls and transition to productive citizens.

A job is not the solution... we just need to change our priorities.

It's not ME, ME... it's WE, WE.

Very true... The problem is the "we" part though. When I look around at my representation in the state of Texas it's insane to me the priorities of my elected officials. There is so little "we" have in common when it comes to our priorities. But the truth is, it's less about the priorities of the many than it is about the financial pull of the few influencing the priorities of Texas.
