Escape to Milwaukee

When it comes to winter getaways, Chicagoans think warm: Cabo, Jamaica, Miami. These are the literal hot spots, where bone-chilling winter blahs melt like so many snowflakes into sandy beaches, tropical drinks ...

The Milwaukee Art Museum s beter than the Art Institute? Nuh-uh. I've been to both, the Art Institute numerous times and Milwaukee's as recent as last month. The Calatrava-design is wonderful, but Milwaukee's collection still pales in comparison to the ones in Detroit or Toledo, not to mention Chicago's.

Why does it seem that the Trib is always printing travel articles on Milwaukee? Also, why do those articles always mention the same things...brats, beer, Calatrava inspired art museum? C'mon, guys! I like Milwaukee too,(grew up an hour north of it), but let's try to print stories about other destinations!

I attended MARQUETTE University in Milwaukee. Three Marquette area Good restaurants not mentioned are the Cousin's sandwich chain, Real Chili and Angelo's. There are others (Is Mader's or Pieces of Eight still open?)You folks are right. Milwaukee pales in comparison to Chicago. I hate Omaha, but even the Milwaukee people like it better than their hometown.

Better than Atlanta's Chattanooga getaway.

Ooh--smell Dalton carpet fibers on the way.

My compliments to the writer of this article on Milwaukee. She has identified well many of the reasons for visiting Milwaukee when one has a free day or two.

Hasn't Milwaukee been done to death already? I doubt Chicagoans give Milwaukee a second thought these days other than summer festivals like Summerfest. How about writing about more off the beaten path destinations like Lake Geneva or Green Lake? Those places have alot to offer, even in winter.

I will have to try some of these restaurants you metioned. We aboslutely loved Cubanitas on Milwaukee Street, Sabor and Carnevior for steak. Milwaukee is quickly changing for the better. It is not Chicago but I like that...

Chicago writes about going to Milwaukee as much as Milwaukee writes about going to Chicago. We're close to each other, it doesn't cost much to get to one or the other. It's good that we're encouraging travel to each city.

As for the "overpaid food" comment.... so 3Hip is telling us that Brookfield has NO overpriced food spots! That's excellent, good to know. Cubanitas is very reasonable priced and good food. Carnevore is about the atmosphere and the attention from the staff you get, as well. Not just the food.Sabor, there's a similar spot in Chicago.
Let's encourage a nice relationship for us, eh? That's for the burbs people to Milwaukee, as well.:-)

Wow, Pieces of Eight, now that brings back memories of spending weekends with my sweetheart who went to Marquette. And yes, it's still there! http://www.piecesofeightmilwaukee.com

I agree with a couple of the previous posters. Would be great if the Tribune travel section would write about Midwest destinations other than Milwaukee and Indianapolis. Both towns are fine, but unlikely to draw many Chicagoans away for anything more than a day or so. Let's have more articles about Green Lake, Madison and the Up North areas of Wisconsin, southern Indiana (Brown County), Harbor Country and the U.P. of Michigan, Minneapolis-St. Paul, etc. Thanks.

kind of missed on the restaurants. Got to try Dream Dance in the casino...yes, we have a casino chicago. Many brand new places to eat, and brand new bars to go out. Even some Irish bars that rival chi-towns best. Chicago's fun if you wanna spend more money on everything.

The Art Institute is WORLD renown for its collection- you really show your ignorance in having a preference for a museum because it is housed in a prettier building!!
