Regarding Richardson Grove, one question: "how is it that ANY business, large or small, is allowed to determine the fate of a California state park, land that belongs to everyone in the entire state?" The Humboldt County representative for Economic Development mentioned, at a public forum , that there are 15 Humboldt County businesses that need the ... Read more

The group that thinks cutting a swath through Richardson Grove is short-sighted is not tiny.

Fix Hwy 299 on the Redding side of Buckhorn and not 1 tree would have to fall. Most trucks use I-5 interstate. There was alot of work going on that 5 mile section of Buckhorn last year. Actually all business would benefit as well as consumers.Larger trucks wouldnt have to be reduced in size and reshipped.

You anti's act like a new road's worth of trees is coming down, when in reality max size of tree is eight inches in diameter.

OK, I'll bite Dahlia. How many of the 130,000 county residents are members of your group? You are a tiny, minuscule minority that is only noteworthy for its ability to whine really, really loud. Stop being so selfish and grow up. You will not deny the rest of us modern life.

A swath, is a gross and miss-leading exageration. At least make an attempt to be honest.

Oh boy, now it's the right-wingers wanting to waste $6 million...to irritate the liberals??

STAA trucks have always driven through there (illegally). Installing a $250,000 signal for one-lane traffic would solve that problem:

A landmark could remain untouched.

The few businesses surveyed to benefit are happy.

And Cal Trans has millions left over for traffic modifications to Highway 101 on Broadway, Eureka, where fatalities and injuries rank us among the worst in the state.

btw, the meeting of "anti's" at the Bayside Grange last week was packed.

An activist's bread and butter is misleading exaggerations. That never learn that deception almost never works. God I miss Tim McKay. He was honest and knew how to work with people.

First of all, the vast majority of the trees to be removed are fir trees not redwoods and it is not a swath as one writer states. Most of the anti's around here are transplants from socal or bay area either by way of staying here after mom and dad let them come to HSU to play or are equity immigrants from places they already ruined and left. They now have come here to retire or play and care nothing of the thousands of people who have lived here for generations , raised families, built businesses to pass on to their children, and created employment for many valued employees and their families. You all should go back to where you paved or concreted over 80% of the land for development and then got your legislators to steal our water. Oh by the way, before you paved and concreted for freeways and development did you make sure all sites were 100% toxic free to the highest standards you are requiring now. Humboldt County was a nice place to live before you all came and now all we have is welfare, bums, drugs, protesters, and non producers. Go home and take Bonnie with you since she has betrayed all the people who elected her in the first place that she said she would represent. When I asked her father , who I respect very much, why she abandoned all of us he told me quote" if you want to get elected in Humboldt Co you have to be a democrat". That is what is is now with Bonnie, to get elected again, not to serve the people of the county. County supervisor is not supposed to be a career, remember this at election time.

Ms Hesseltine thoughtful article underscores the wrongfulness, even illegality, of stealing the public commons. Wake up, indeed! For a musical take on this, see my songs, "Wake Up, Supervisors" and "Richardson Grove" on You Tube:

just what we don't need--- more big trucks bringing more stuff. have any of you watched "The Story of Stuff?" if not, take 20 minutes out of your life and get educated. 99% of the stuff we buy ends up in the trash within 6 months.
28 old growth redwood tree roots will be cut. that's the reality. and i am still amazed that people who want to live a "modern" way of life feel the need to destroy nature.
i respect the fact that you have built business to pass onto your family, children, and grandchildren but i ask you: how about the fact that you should want to also leave them clean air, trees, and nature?
ignorance is not bliss. and the environment should not be a political issue. this is our home-- all of us. and we should want to preserve it.

We have only about 3% of the old growth redwoods that were here when European settlers arrived. The greed and grab cutting that destroyed the 97% gone is a contributing factor in global warming. Now I know that there are denialist dim wits out there that don't believe there is such a thing as global warming but I'm not wasting my time trying to tell you anything. The roots of a number of old growth redwoods will be cut halfway off. Then where the roots were will be covered by a permeable concrete based surface. Concrete = lime. Lime- base, redwoods need acid soil, not base. If the road is widened the trunks of these huge redwoods will be right on the edge of the road. CalTrans has no evidence that what they are doing will not kill the effected redwoods.
CalTrans will be using jack hammers, concrete grinders and trucks with back up warning beeps but they claim those things will make no more noise than the current ambient noise level. Either they're very stupid or they're liars, either way I can't trust them.
A so-called study was done that took a chunk of money out of the headwaters fund in order for a professor at UC Davis to show that businesses will benefit by having STAA trucks and they are needed by local businesses. Only 19 carefully picked businesses were asked and only 14 replied. That's a ridiculously small number for a study to be built on. Further, the study gave no figures, no proof that the trucks were needed.
Bottom line is that this is not a small project, it has the potential to change Humboldt Cty and not for the better. Santa Rosa here we come. A CalTrans engineer spoke about a week ago on a KMUD talk show saying that one reason for the project is so big trucks carrying nuclear wastes can be brought up to our port, They don't want to offload that stuff in a heavily populated area like the Bay area. Aren't we lucky to be chosen?

we can hate bush, hate capitalism, hate corporations, hate republicans, hate christians but we can't hate homosexuals.
wow the liberal thought police are hard at work censoring speech again.
here's an idea. why not let people say what they want and if you don't like it don't attend the show. it's calledfree speech.

where were these activists last week when arcata was having the school kids pay tribute to rap music? i guess hating women is ok.

Well Sylvia why don't you just stay in charming Westhaven or Trinidad or just go back to wherever you came from and leave humboldt co to the natives. We were doing just fine until the great migration of "enlightened" peoples that have already ruined their homeland and thought they could teach us backwoods folks some things.

may i just say that there are plenty of Humboldt natives that don't want this project to happen.

some of us were born here and raised here and don't want to see this precious area become like every other smog filled city.
