Sirens for lightning

I happened to be awake at 2:30 a.m. on the morning of May 9 when all the tornado sirens were going off in Bay. Since there were not any warnings on my weather radio or the TV, we called the police.“We just wanted to warn every one about the lightning” is the response we got.

I am very confused by this. Crying wolf is not something our city needs to be doing. If I had been asleep, I may never had known it was storming, or that the lightning was so bad. I probably wouldn’t have cared.

The sirens should be for tornadoes only! I can imagine the families that woke their kids up and loaded them up in the car in the pouring rain. Then they get to the safe room, and it isn’t even open because there was not a tornado. I happen to know that this is what happened for at least three families.

So in closing, I am asking that our fine city do not run the sirens again unless there is real threat of tornadoes. This way my 75-year-old mother won’t have to sleep in the bathtub for lightning.

Congratulations Chief Kelly. Will you be sounding sirens for high winds, thunder, and rain too? Maybe a siren to warn us about the fog?

Thanks for doing your usual "good job"

the sirens went off because the people who installed then didn't put grounding rods on them,so when it lightninged it would set them off.It didn't have anything to do with anyone turning them on.the other afternoon they installed the rods and in a month or so they are replaceing the box that runs it,to fix the problem, they were testing them the other afternoon when they installed the rods in the ground.

My grandparents who are in their late 70s also got out of bed and went to the safe room only to find that it was locked. Not to mention that my children were awakened and sent to the storm shelter until I could find out what was going on.

One malfunction, I can understand. Twice is ridiculous. It is time to get it under control before a real tornado comes and people do not pay attention.

You must have not lived in Bay all your life are you would remember all we had was the Fire station sirens. In the early seventies after the Jonesboro Tornadoes we had no warning system but we did have the police and firemen that would put there life on the line and cover the city with police cars and firetruck with a loud car radio to alert us of aproaching storm. I'm grateful for what they did. I'm sorry you lost a little sleep. after all you have advantages we never had such as doplar radar , the weather channel and the computer you are using to bitch on.

I have lived in Bay all of my life. I do remember the police and fireman putting their lives on the line.

My concern was not about my sleep. It was about my grandparents who have not lived in this area until the last year. They, along with several other people, got into their cars to try to go to safety only to have the "safe" place locked. THAT WAS MY CONCERN!

I was concerned about the malfunctioning of the alarm. Cry wolf too many times and people just wont listen.

Man you people are quick to name Chief Kelly for anything, maybe you should get your facts a little more in line.... The police department does NOT set off the sirens, that is done by the fire department, and i Highly doubt anyone was told "we just wanted to warn everyone about the lightning" maybe you called jonesboro 911 now those fools probably would have said something like that !!! Mistakes do happen and twice in one month also happens when you have to special order parts that take months to be delivered so who do you blame then, the mayor for picking a company that takes that long to deliver, well heres the truth to that, THEY ALL TAKE THERE SWEET TIME TO DO ANYTHING rather it be whelen or federal that makes the siren they still take forever to deliver defective parts !!! It is funny to see how when the first thing goes wrong you guys jump on David, heck i guess if the water tower fell down then David must have done something to cause it, i can read the topix headline now "CHIEF DAVID SINGLEHANDILY KNOCKS DOWN WATER TOWER" whats next, the bay exit ramp is closed "MUST HAVE BEEN DAVID" lmao you people kill me over there, maybe you should look at the good things this man does, like check and see how many drug arrests get made each year compared to previous administrations, and as far as the gym goes, David cant hold the other officers hands all day long like everyone thinks he should IT JUST DONT HAPPEN. Be thankful you have a police department that has the manpower to handle situations as they arise, THE BOTTOM LINE IS EVERY DEPARTMENT HAS GOOD APPLES AND BAD APPLES NO MATTER HOW BIG OR SMALL. Your city is lucky to have a man like david, I wish he was the chief where i live, we are over ran with dope heads !!
