COOKEVILLE -- If you work for the Putnam Sheriff's Department, better not fall in love with any of your co-workers.

Those who do so could lose their jobs under a newly issued Sheriff's Department policy titled "No-Spouse and No-Dating Rule" that has been authorized by general order of Sheriff David Andrews.

The newly added rule is for the purpose of maintaining a "friendly but professional atmosphere" in the department, which prides itself on "the professional relationship between its employees," Sheriff Andrews said.

The new policy, which is being handed to each employee in writing, is as follows:

"Employees of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department are not allowed to date or marry one another.

"In the event employees wish to date one another, one of the parties must abandon his/her employment with the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.

"Dating of an employee by another employee is strictly forbidden and will result in disciplinary action up to dismissal of either or both persons involved.

"Romantic or sexual relations between employees at the Putnam County Sheriff's Department are inappropriate and will result in disciplinary action up to dismissal of either or both persons involved."

Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jacky Farley said he and Sheriff Andrews developed the new policy in consultation with County Attorney Jeff Jones and said the policy is the same one that is in place at the Putnam Ambulance Service.

He said the policy is designed to prevent various workplace conflicts that sometimes occur when employees enter dating relationships with fellow employees.

"These situations sometimes cause scheduling difficulties or result in conflicts that could get in the way of work," Farley said.

He said that currently a few Sheriff's Department employees are in dating relationships and will be affected by the new policy and said some have talked of challenging the policy in court.

"But we believe the new policy is legally acceptable and that it will help the department maintain a professional atmosphere," he said.

Probably because they are so unprofessional! Don't know who covers the prisoners in justice building, but it's really shameful! Doing piggyback rides to each other while on duty. Wish someone would do undercover investigation there!!!!

It is suspicious that husband and wife deputies are allowed to work together. They are seen riding together in department vehicle – trading favors, maybe? The female deputy also drives her department vehicle around on her free time. All of this looks like a great way to spend tax payer money. I couldn’t be more proud…

And some companies encourage family members to work together:

Southwest Airlines:
LUV relationships frequently blossom at Southwest Airlines. In fact, more than 1,600 of Southwest's 26,900 Employees are married to each other. In other words, both spouses of approximately 820 married couples work together at Southwest Airlines. Some of the Employee couples met at the office, while others found each other outside of the Company and are working together now as a result of Employees loving their jobs and encouraging spouses to apply.

"It speaks very well of Southwest that Employees would want their family members to work here," says Libby Sartain, Southwest's vice president of people, the Company's human resources department. "Our Employees feel very comfortable in our family atmosphere."

The LUV airline feels its Employees are its best recruiters and are likely to have family members who share their spirit and work ethic. The carrier employs countless siblings, cousins, parents, and other in-laws. In fact, at one time, seven members of the same family were working for the airline.

Southwest has a simple policy for the employment of relatives. Its only restrictions are to stipulate the children of corporate officers (vice president level or above) are not eligible for employment and relatives cannot supervise one another. This policy is listed in Southwest's "Guidelines for Leaders," an empowerment tool that helps the airline's leaders make decisions benefiting all Southwest Employees.

Guess which one (Putnam County or Southwest Airlines) has been named a great place to work?

Oh how quickly some people forget that they were dating their now wife while they both were employees. Only thing is, she was married and so was he at the time and two families was broken up. If this stands up half the Department will have to quit. I know of eight that are screwing around with each other right now. Talking about the pot calling the kettle black. LOL I hope it all comes out in the open. Maybe some of the crap over there will end!

I was just wondering if cracking is the same as dating. I guess this thing could become technical.

This will end up in court. So your telling me if your married right now and in the police dept., one has to quit, that's laughable. What a circus they have going on here. Can't wait till here the next chapter in this soap opera. I see another cop got fired today in Cookeville, with no explanation a officer Reed.

Maybe this will help keep Andrews out of office, in the next election. He has made several enemies with this new policy. He is always bitching about that jail, wanting this or that for his jail, now this policy on dating, marry, etc. Seems to me that someone would get tired of his crap and vote him out of office. Look out Sheriff, could be a "new Sheriff" in town, in a few years....just a suggestion.

It would seem to a blind man that the police are having a f--ck feast here in Cookeville, why else would this come out from the top cop. I am so glad my wife does not work there, she might be taking it up the ass in the front seat of a patrol car. Be thankful for the little things I say.
