Heard some more incoming freshman who have played football since rebels are now deciding to " focus on basketball". When will the town stand up to Mcwilliams and get him to quit influencing kids to just play basketball. He should be fired for this. If Leftwitch had a backbone, he would end this!

its all true. what you have to realize is that nothing will ever change until someone who gives a damn about football other than a couple of coaches and some parents is leading that school as principal! or until they get a REAL athletic director who cares and is proactive in getting things done not just wearing a title! coaches are leaving like coach v to get real jobs that pay real money! they dont pay and they dont open up positions for coaches who can teach! every other school in america who wants their football program to be successful does these things and supports their coaches and players who sacrifice so much time and effort! its horse crap the way things are done down here and they will continue to reap the benefits of their ridiculously stupid methods for years to come until something is done! and the sad part is....the ones who suffer the most are the kids of Baxter who love football but are at the mercy of an ignorant administration who simply will not support their efforts by keeping coaches around by moving people around and making jobs available for the real coaches who coach and can make these kids believe in themselves and their program!!!! im pissed off 2!!!damnit!!

I agree 100 percent about McWilliams influencing young men to just play basketball, in a school the size of Upperman the kids need to play all the sports they can. With that said, the schools administration cannot just hire coaches and let them teach. The positions have to be open and they just are not. Please remember the county commision does all they can do each year to cut education and this is part of the end result. It hurts also when coaches are hired to coach then get tenure and quit coaching(Coach Brooks for one) it takes up jobs that should go to coaches and that really hurts. Any way Go Bees!

u make some decent points rex and i feel where you are coming from on some points..but sam and just about every other head coach in the last 8 -10 years have all left for the same reason..the administration doesnt hire coaches period! of course coaches have to be able to teach and be good and their are plenty of great ones out there. my point is every single school has the same issues in trying to find coaches who can teach the positions available every year. the difference is that upperman notoriously puts the priority elsewhere and NEVER on the potential betterment of upperman football. and that is the program at upperman that is neglected the most. in the last 8 years they have hired ONE yes i said ONE coach in the building! and now with the new head coach....they have ZERO and i mean ZERO coaches in the building! you can say what you want about no positions available but an administration who cares about how well the program does year in and year out will find a way and make a way period. no excuses. they are not the only school in america that has to deal with these issues..please! upperman football is just on the backburner on a yearly basis and the results speak for themselves. its actually one of the most pathetic situations i have ever heard of dealing with highschool sports!

Your point is well taken. One last thought, remember the school board cut coaching supplements a few years back. It is beyond me why anyone would coach for the small amount they make. Now I understand love of school and all that but fact is it is alot of work and pressure for no more than you get out of it. Again please remember Mr. Leftwich cannot hire a coach who can teach but he must hire a teacher that can coach ,big diffence. I am really not trying to take up for him but I am trying to look at this from all angles.

thats the difference in thinking of a non football town versus an absolute football town! administrations in bigtime football towns recognize that great football coaches ARE great teachers. period. on and off the field and in the classroom. therefore they hire a great football coach who can teach great as well..until they start putting the priority on hiring great coaches, who are great teachers...they will continue garnering the same results while ignorantly hoping for better ones. this philosophy of hiring a teacher who might be able to coach is the same mediocre mentality that has gotten this program to where it is in the first place..you cannot be passive when going after a coach..if you want the best results then you go after the best..you make a conscious effort to seek out and find GREAT coaches/teachers.. you dont sit back and hope one falls in your lap! and i just dont see the sense of urgency by the front office when this poor program and these coaches and kids have suffered enough do to the lack of priority on them by the admin! and i say ignorantly because they simply are not doing what is necessary to give the program a chance to win. yet they still want great results...valueable coaches like coach v and coach brooks will continue to leave the program because they never recieved any help while they were working their tails off for these kids..very sad..

and to answer the question of why any coach would coach for the small amount they make?? one word: passion! two more words: the kids.. enough said...

Sounds like u wish u had played football.. let the kids decide what they want.. is the coach holidng a gun to their head? I'm gonna guess no. So the kids must want to play basketball.. use your head for more than a hat rack.. and start thinking. They don't have to work as hard at basketball as they would for football..maybe your kids are lazy did you think of that? Maybe its your fault for not giving them good hardworking ethics. Stop blaming other people for your mistakes or your kidslack of effort.

very ignorant. No guns are being held to there heads ut just about the same. Last year the starting rb quit the team after coming home from bball camp under pressure to " focus on basketball". After realizing he really wanted to play both came back to football within a week despite what McWilliams wanted. Most kids at 17 are not this strong to stand up to adults pressure. After the season he ended up quitting bball because he went from a starter to a bench warmer simply because he played football. Everone that knows this kid beleaved he was way good enough to be a starter. It was obviously what was happening. So no guns to the head but just the same. McWilliams should be fired.

so true you are. I can't wait to see McWilliams or Leftwitch and speak my mind and I don't even have a kid playing. Its not right. This tow is to blame to. You have to commit to something to be good at it. Best of luck this year to Upperman Football.....hope you beat the odds stacked against you.

Livingstone has good teas and I see same kids playing football and basketball. Upperman can't beat LA tuff football hardened kids in bball so you would think McWilliams would take a hint. Most years the bball team is very soft.

McWilliams needs to be taken down a peg or two by administration before a parent does it.

yes and he had a heck of a bunch of good assistants in Pemberton, Tacket, Grissom, and even Watson helped. 5 coaches all employed at the HS. Now we have one coach at the HS, one from jr high and a bunch of 21 year old kid volunteers. Wonder why we struggle now????? Thanks in large part to( dumbazz, Mcwilliams azz kissing) Leftwitch.

Totally agree. Nick Saban couldn't win without having a strong support staff and Ben has his hands tied completely and can get no quality help.

well Leftwitch needs to change his attitude and help football or be ousted. Total screwing 9% of the school( 45 players) is bs. He need to keep McWilliams from forcing kids to choose only basketball, and find a way to hire some teachers to also coach football.

Why does everyone give in to both the McWilliams, when they dont like what their doing? I think the parents need to step in and do something instead of complaining on here. Its seems to me that everyone bitches but never takes a stand and say enough is enough. Quit giving in and stand up to them.

I do not have a child playing for either one of them but if I did my child would play what ever sport he or she wanted to and no coach would be telling me any different. There are plenty of kids who are athletic and talented enough to play 2 sports and if a coach wont let them do that then do it any way. Stick to your guns people. If everyone would stick to their guns then the McWillaims wouldnt have anyone to run all over!!!

There are a couple of very good points made in this thread.

1) To be truly successful you need athletes. Some of the best athletes in Baxter are not playing Football. But it is not Bobbys fault. Some of the kids are concentrating on Baseball. Some are not playing school sports at all. The coaches have to hit the halls and get these kids out for the program

2) Helps to have the coach in the school. Ben is a good coach and a good guy. He will do well, I believe, but he could do better if he were in the school with the kids everyday.

3) Baxter is a Basketball/Baseball town. As much as we all love Football, the town is dominated by basketball and baseball. That is not the fault of Bobby or Dana. It was this way before they were coaches and it will be that way after they are gone.

4) If you want to be good at something, you have to commit to it. The ways things are done these days, not just in baxter, the best athletes in each sport are usually concentrating on that one sport. There are very few REALLY GOOD 2 or 3 sport athletes. And it is usually not Football and Basketball because Football practice gets in the way of Basketball camps, etc. Basketball is a year round sport. that is not Bobbys fault.

5) I do not agree with everything that Bobby does, but he is trying to run a good program and compete for a State Championship. He is doing what he needs to do to keep up with other programs.

6) I have heard too many times about people in this town who "quit playing basketball because I didnt want to deal with coach mcwilliams" (male and female) when in fact, the kids fell behind the rest of the team because they didnt want to put the time and effort in. If you dont put in the practice, you get left behind. It is pretty simple.

I have never had a kid play basketball at Upperman. I have never had a kid play football at Upperman. I am not friends with any of the coaches, but I am VERY close to the situation, I know what you are all talking about.

I wish Ben the best of luck. He deserves it. And he will need it. get yer kids out there playing football, and dont worry about what other peoples kids are doing.

His job is to run the school, not the football program. Period.

there are enough problems in that school on an everyday basis, and it is completely unfair of anyone to expect that the athletic programs will be run perfectly to their own wishes.

I dont think that McWilliams' are perfect, I dont agree with everything that they do, but they are Parents, Teachers and Coaches, in that order. People trying to do the best they can, and they are doing a very good job. Like I said, they are not perfect, and I dont agree with everything they do, but they dont deserve the crap they take around this town either.
