I have to say that the times I have been there, not for myself but with family members, I was not impressed with the care of the physicians but I personally know many of the nursing staff back there and trust them completely. I do agree with "Appling Honor" that the ER is abused in that people that could be treated in physicians offices use the ER because they have no insurance and cannot pay and know that they will be treated anyway. But I am been around enough to know that those patients that are emergencies are seen first and non-emergent patients seen last. So if you had to wait a long time, perhaps you were considered non-emergent and could wait. And while your illness or your loved ones illness seems like an emergency to you, it's not considered emergent unless delaying treatment will cause you harm. In other words, nausea, vomiting, belly pain would take a back seat to a possible heart attack or stroke. However, that having been said, I am sure improvements should be made and won't ever be unless you have a change in upper level management, especially at the very top. Anyway, that my two cents worth.

The problem with the ER in Baxley is management and the physicians on staff. I have personally been to the ER and I have been with family members and the wait has always been over three hours. When I was taken to the ER there was only one person being seen, an elderly lady from the nursing home. I was seen in triage and then sent back to the waiting area for another 3 hours while the ER filled up with patients. I would say that all of them should have been classified as emergencies. I received several apologies from the wait desk and was even told they didn't know what was taking so long. When I finally did get taken to a room, I could hear that the physician on call was giving a lesson to the nursing home staff that were with the elderly woman. That wasn't an issue for me, but if she were stable it looks like he could move on to emergencies and speak to the staff after clearing a few patients. By the tone of the conversation she was no longer in harm's way. My ISSUE came when he was heard outside the door talking to another staff member about her pulled back muscle. She complained about her back and he offered to rub her down if her husband would not oblige.(WTH??) This conversation went on for at least five minutes and was also heard by my sister who happened to be sitting in the room with me. I got up and walked out of the ER while my sister complained to a nurse about the whole ordeal. This was going on the fourth hour and we were a bit short on patience. I left and went to the Hazlehurst ER. The staff rushed me into the ER within 10 minutes of being there and had my sister complete my paperwork. The doctor told me that I was very lucky that my heart had not stopped before getting to the ER(due to an adverse reaction to medication). To top it all off, I received a bill from Appling Triage for taking my blood pressure and temp...I had already done both before ever going to the ER. GRRR!! Needless to say, Hazelhurst ER will always get my business before Appling County. Again, I have had friends and family go through the same thing at our ER and from the sound of it we weren't the only ones. Sorry for the long post, but I find it hard to defend my hometown on this topic.

I completely understand where you are coming from.I remember when a dr.'s visit was $10.00.times are hard for us all. I stated my opinion based on what I've seen when at the E.R. We all get frustrated when our needs are not being met. I know I do. I do believe that the E.R. staff is good and they provide quality service. we are a small town with limited resources. Here's hoping things get better for us all. |
