I do know the owner and he told me the home changed ownership 17 times. It has never been lived in until now. Some of the home's exterior and interior items date back to pre civil war and the late 1800's. Windows, doors, and tiles was imported from all over. The house was called a mansion due to the size as well as the amenities in the home. The house is not haunted.
A dude name Jeff Tolliver once owned the house, I don't think they lived in it but they did throw one heck of a halloween party there many years ago - Scary place

This is correct, Jeff and his second wife did buy the house and lived in the basement for about six-weeks. The house had so much damage and was costing so much money they finally sold the house and moved into a trailer just outside of town. Not sure about the halloween party, I was not invited. I do know the house has been used many times for parties that were not legal, if you know what I mean. The parties usually had drugs, alcohol and wild orgies all which were not promoted by the owners. We use to sneak in the house from the old field behind the house, which now has been cleared and homes have been built now. I will say the house was always fun to play in and around until the cops came and ran us off. Many fond and crazy memories

I do not want to start a rumor or make others freak out when I ask this but I have always heard Spell's Mansion has a number of hidden rooms and secret passages. Was also told there is an underground tunnel which one can go from one side to the other. Please don't scream at me or say OMG! I have always loved the house and ALWAYS wanted to go inside but was too scared to do so.

I have heard this as well. I would be scared to go in the house. People say the strangest things happen in there and this is why noo one has ever made it a home.(Looks great and I would love to see inside).

There is also Dishes in the Kitchen cabinets, Towels in the Bathrooms and Carpets on the floors along with paint on the walls.Lord help all the people that think this Man's Home is something to keep the gossip wheel turning. Give Him a break. If you all had been so interested in the House why did you not spend your money and do something to save it before Dr. Mullis spent His and made it into His Home ? As for all the people that wants to see inside, make Him an offer to allow Him to track mud and dirt thru your house and look in your closets and cabinets and he may let you in his Home. But do not count on it.And if you are His friend you have already been invited to His Home. If no invite then you are not a friend and need to lay off this topic.

There are 4 grand and magnificent homes in Jeff Davis to me the our are:
1. Spell's Mansion
2. The Edwardian Mansion known as the Big House
3. The Mickey Floyd Home
4. The Old Joe Frazier Home

These are my picks for Jeff Davis, I am sure there are many more. All four have great history in our county but it does seem Spell's Mansion is the most talked about by far. I think people enjoy talking about the house because of the mystery which surrounds it. From the fall of grace by the Spell's to the misfortunes that have occurred and everyones desires to step back in time for a moment to relive all the splendor it was created for.

I do agree some of the things on this topic are far streched and should not be talked about and understanding ones privacy is an issue as well. I am glad someone took the time, money, vision, desire and dedication to restore Spell's Mansion back to the grander it was intended many years ago. Well done.

Yes, the top two listed are by far the best. The Floyd house is nice except it is too close to the road.

I think I agree with you as well. I am sure there are more homes in Jeff Davis that met the same but the above are my picks as well. The Big House would be my first pick if it was not sitting between the vets office and a hotel. Kind of spoils it.

On Sunday my daughter and I had the pleasure in meeting the new owner of Spell's Mansion. Prior to this date we had never met Mr. Mullis or Dr. Mullis as I later discovered. I must say he was extremely nice and very welcoming to us both. The three of us stood on the massive front porch and chatted for almost an hour. I shared my memories of visiting next door to take piano lessons for several years. Although we did not enter the home, I could tell from the moment the front doors opened and he greeted us the home was magnificent. From what we saw in the foyer it was something out of Southern Living or Architectural Digest. Rich colored walls, enormous paintings, massive molding and white marble floors. I am so proud someone has taken the time to fix this home up. When we left I told my daughter, now that is a smart man, she replied yes and he is a hottie too. Thank you for bringing Spellís Mansion back to life.

My first visit to the mansion was back in 1986 and I found a manequin hand under the kitchen sink cabinet. It scared the crap out of me and I screamed bloody murder because I thought it was real. My friends and I ran out of the house terrified. LOL We went another time and some people was already in there and they scared the crap out of us.

Are you sure it was not a real hand? There have been a number of deaths in the house and this is about the time Glenn and Sare Beth left the old house. Rumor has it she killed Glenn for having a sexual affair with another man in the county - might have been his hand?? There were and are always people in the house - some are alive and some just wonder around seekign the way out. Brave sould you are to go back more than once.

Maybe? do you?
The house has many creepy memories and why should anyone try to hide them. I was just asking about the hand and the story of the Spell's is what I have always heard. Everyone hears something about the house. Now, I will add it looks great now after all these years. Stop being so mean 'friend that knows'

LOL it was a manequin hand. After we ran out of the house screaming in tears, my friends made me go back in the house and show them the hand in the cabinet. She brought it home and kept touching my shoulder with it all the way home. Glenn is very much alive and still married. They visited Gary's open house at Christmas.

That is news to me. I thought the old man drank himself to death and the wife moved away. So they are still alive? Learn something new every day.

Anyone know what kind of party/gathering they were having at Spell's Mansion tonight? We live a couple of blocks down the road and could see it all lit up. Very eye catching.
