My mother and I were riding home from church Sunday and I noticed there was a palm reader that had opened up a business. I am only 19 and live in Appling County. I know what the bible says about that subject. I am wondering if I was the only person with a problem with this. We are very fortunate in Appling not to be in a financial mess as some of the other counties surrounding us. We have many more businesses and display quite a better community. I feel that God does bless us for the way that we display ourselves as a whole and that we should not allow people like that to be able to have any right to display their practices. What they display in their own homes is their business but when it becomes open to the public do we become accountable for allow our children and people of our town to be open to garb such as that? Even though other adults are responsible for their actions, still I believe we should do something about this.

The palm reader has a business, and the owner of said business has a right to advertise. The U.S. Constitution provides for freedom of religion, so while your preacher gets paid for practicing your religion, the owner of the palm reading shop soes too, if reading palms is part of his/her religion. There is also the possibility that the palm reader is of the same religion as you, but chose to take advantage of people's beliefs in superstitions. Either way, the government allows for the freedom of religion because there are people in this country, this state, and even this county who do not share your religious beliefs.

Very well stated, I believe strongly in following the Constitution & it must be protected. Let freedom ring.....while it still can.

What do you suggest we do about it? Forcibly remove the business in violation of their legal & civil rights? Enforce the religious will of people who do not agree with fortune telling? You say, "We should not allow people like that to be able to to have any right to display their practices" Did you not study anything about the constitution of the United States in school? Your statements border on asinine concerning the great freedoms we currently enjoy in this country. The statements you make are much more dangerous than any palm reader. Before you start thinking I'm a flaming liberal you are wrong. I am VERY conservative & I believe in our constitution.

If it bothers you so bad take your Bible to the palm readers house and discuss your concerns with her. Tell her she is sinning and it really bothers you that she has the audacity to do this in your town. Ask her to quit reading palms for a living and get a real job or go on welfare to feed her children. You could also ask her to uproot her family and move out of your town.

Very good point there, if you start talking about taking someones rights away you might better look out for your own being taken away. It's a slippery slope.

Honey the best thing I can say to you is you are absolutely fair in your beliefs and 100% right. As for the others who try to use the constitution against you don't worry. Our wonderful country was founded on christian beliefs and for the freedom of religion which was christianity. Not pagonism or any other beliefs. So with that being said you are not in any opinion saying to uproot them but in account of saying for the public display of this practice to be kept private and not in the open. You must be so many feet away to open a store which sales alcohol so what makes this any different.

I always so to topics such as this, if we are such in the wrong:
"if we go to hell we can ask, if they go to hell...too bad on them."

You have the same right to state your opinion and OTHERS NEED TO STOP BASHING ON YOURS!!!!

First and foremost, Concerned asked for everyones opinion.Next,if you will read your American history book, you will find that religious freedom is meant for all, not just christians. No one tried to use the constitution "against anyone". It was just pointed out that everyone has certain rights in this country be they Christian,Jew,or Pagan. As for the stores that sell alcohol and their distance from churches. This is a city ordnance put in place when Baxley went from dry to wet back in the 1970's. Personally, narrow-minded people are way more frightening to me that some fortune teller.

True believer says, "You must be so many feet away to open a store which sales alcohol so what makes this any different." Alcohol is a drug & intoxicant & fortune teller is a belief. Very different things, our constitution does not sanction the curtailing of a citizens right to a belief system. As legal citizens we have a right to our beliefs & a right to practice them. Yes, this country was founded on Christian morality but the freedom of religion did not apply to only Christians, it provides for all religious belief like it or not. By the way I am a Christian myself & a strong believer in the justice & freedoms contained in our Constitution.

I hope you didn't really take that post as a literal suggestion... the person even used the name "sarcasm" which implies that if you literally go tell the fortune teller to leave town, this would be asinine and tremendously rude. It would also portray you as a bigot.

Please (this is meant literal, not sarcastically), research sarcasm and irony.

Really? If you are so concerned about this, you must BELIEVE in this nonsense. If she were truly a fortune teller, why would she not have already won the lotto or made an investment in Microsoft and made a "fortune" that way istead of opening a business in a small town. This practice is a scam in which to defraud people of their money and a way for her to make money. I for one do not believe in this mess. However, this is JUST MY OPINION. Would you rather her open another bar, where people go to drink and party, which can sometimes lead to adultry and other sins? A sin is a sin is a sin? so could you choose one sin over the next?Sin is all around us in this world, and yes, even in Baxley. It is how we conduct ourself and live that we need to worry about. We cannot control what happens around us, but we can control if we choose to go to one of these places. Like I said. JUST MY OPINION.
