I fully support the smoking ban in Lafayette public places. I feel my right to clean air supercede someone's right to smoke in a public place. If they choose to slowly kill themselves by smoking that is their choice, I choose a quality of life that does not include the disease and deterioration that smoking can cause. Personally, I believe that the number of folks going out on the town would increase because they wouldn't be plagued with second hand smoke and smelling like an ashtray when they leave someplace. I think it would bring in more revenue as a non-smoking establishment.

How high and mighty are we? My rights supercede yours, its a shame that you are so shallow minded. I hope someone takes the city of Lafayette to the supreme court for violating MY and fellow smokers civil rights.

Thats because your a phobic person. If you didnt drive a car do you think you would smell the exhasut fumes on your clothes. Plus it must creep into all the bars and resturants too ?

I AGREE WITH BOILERDAVE..IT IS ONE THING TO HAVE A NON SMOKING RESTURANT.. BUT COME ON PEOPLE LIKE SIT AT A BAR HAVE A COLD ONE AND BE ABLE TO SOMKE A CIGARETTE..AS A SMOKER I GET TIRED OF COMPLAINING PEOPLE... I DON'T GO AROUND COMPLAINNING ABOUT SOME HIGH AND MIGHTY WITH 100.00 PERFUME ON THAT GAGS THE PEOPLE AROUND HER.. AS IT HAS ALREADY BEEN SAID YES I THINK IT WILL HURT SOME BUSINESSES..
YOU DON'T LIKE TO BE AROUND THE SMOKERS SIT ON NON SMOKING SIDE OR GO TO A RESTURANT THAT DOES ALLOW SMOKING IN IT..LIKE ALREADY SAID I CAN SMOKING A CIGARETTE AND BE ABLE TO DRIVE HOME WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT TAKING A LIFE...
THEY SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO TELL A SMOKER THAT THEY CAN'T SMOKE A CIGARETTE OUTSIDE AS LONG AS BUTTS AREN'T THRONE ON THE GROUND

I am a smoker, I am respectful to those around me who do not. If I am in a public place (close quarters) or at someone's home I always ask if I may smoke. Most resturants have smoking sections set aside or in the back. If you go out for dinner and come home smelling like an ashtray perhaps you should reconsider where you are dinning.
How far will (city) governments go? It is unfair to tell a business owner, who pays taxes and owns their property , how to run said business. Certain groups of people are being singled out. Currently smokers. But who's to say it will stop there. Other groups could come under fire in the future.

10 people showed up. TEN. 10.

Sounds like the Ohio smoking ban protest last year during October, the 10th month of the year.

It looks like that most smokers do not care one way or another about smoking bans. Except of course the few raving nicotine addicts who spend the vast majority of their life posting here on Topix bemoaning the fact that they can no longer smoke in public.

And seven of those were IN FAVOR OF THE BAN!

"Only 10 people turned out for the public meeting at Ivy Tech. Democratic City Council Member Julie Novak said 7 people spoke in favor of passing a smoking ban, while three spoke against."

I agree to the Ban, smoking stinks. I would vote for the next bill, where we line up all the smokers and then kill them. But that is just me.

Some smokers smell so bad. Do they just chain smoke or do they never bathe?

Have you ever attended a school function and smelled a 6 year old boy 6 feet away that stunk of smoke? I wonder if he had a smoking problem or his irresponsible parents?
Smokers could never tell, their smelling/tasting is shot.

You may hate the smoke, but don't hate the smokers.

... Well yes people that smoke stink as i'm sure my clothes do to being a smoker.. But i think that people that bath in perfum stink rather then smell good...you go to a school function or anyother function and sit beside some woman who has on perfum it smell as though she has used the whole darn bottle.. but the people who smoke should be allowed to step outside to have a smoke

A bar, traven or restraunt is NOT a public place.
It is not owned or operated by any goverment entity. It is not Riehle Plaza nor is it the Court House, it is a privatly owned operation
that if you do not want to work in..........no one is holding a gun to your head saying you WILL work here. If you don't like the smell go elsewhere, no one will stop you I promise. I will call you a cab myself. If you want a non-smoking bar go to W.Lafayette, or will you be to drunk leaving your W.L. bar to get home?

Once you apply for a business license, liquor license you agree to abide by hundreds of local, state and federal codes, laws and ordinances. How you treat your patrons and employees.
It is know considered a place for anyone of legal age to enter. The Public!!! Try telling Blacks they are not welcome, or Whites, or Asian, try telling Gays they are not welcome. No Handicap entrance, etc.

Are you saying we should get rid of ALL the codes, laws and ordinances a business owner has to follow or just the ones you don't like?
Second Hand Smoke is a HEALTH HAZARD and in 2008 has no place in any business, public or private.

Then should we shut down the bars? Liver disease, kidney disease. Have you ever heard of a whole family dying from a smoking driver? And, once again no one put gun to your head and said that you WILL work here or you WILL eat here. See you have a choice I chose to go to a bar where I can smoke..........MY CHOISE. Who are you to inflict your moralitise on me?

Yea I have! A driver of his car dropped his cigarette and when he picked it up he lost control and hit someone head on. Killing his family and the driver of the other car.
He was critically injured, but recovered to live the rest of his life with that on his conscious.

Please smoke outside, fool!!!
